I was a heroin and fentanyl addict for almost 12 years, the last 2 1/2 of it being homeless on the streets. I was living and sleeping in places NO human being should have to live or sleep in, such as park benches, on concrete, behind gas stations, a porta potty in winter for 3+ months, etc. In May of 2021, I was robbed and stabbed 7 times by another homeless guy, whom I thought I was helping by giving him some food and a cigarette when he asked for it, but he used that as a distraction to pull the knife on me. Obviously, I lived and he got 8 years in prison for it(however, he gets out in a few months because he worked time off), and I've been clean a good while now. I work as a mental health tech at a local psych hospital/rehab, split rent on a 5-bedroom house, bought a truck last year, which was the first vehicle I had owned in 8 years, and my life has gotten SO much better since getting clean and off the streets. It's not been easy at all, but it's definitely been worth it.

I live in the LA area. My husband works for Life Line Rehabilitation Center which is a Christian based rehab. He has gone to outreach at Skid Row… he has found that the governmental aid has made people very comfortable in their addiction with free food, toiletries and narcan… so many resources that people don’t see or feel the need to stop doing drugs… the resources put a bandaid on the problem but don’t fix the root issue. The government needs to invest more in rehabilitation instead of free hand-outs

As a volunteer outreach worker, this is not the kind of trauma porn we need to be spread around the internet. I've been to skid row. I've been to the houseless encampments in San Francisco, Oakland, Portland, Seattle, Las Vegas. They're actually peaceful, and this sensationalist bullshit does nothing to highlight the organisations actually trying our best, and humanizing the people we work with. The reason he got a bunch of "I don't want to be filmed." Is because he's not with a trusted organization. @@Idelvion Even as an American I don't want to visit the big cities. What do most have in common? First thing is you are NOT allowed to defend yourself. Straight up if this happened in Texas, sure you'd have a few crazy people attack a Texan, but about 3 seconds later you'd hear 6 loud booms, a thud, and then Texan reloading. Problem solved, no crazy person running around threatening people with a hatchet, no dude just riding around slapping people in the face for no reason (because criminals do fear getting shot, its a good deterrent). But instead we have a party that likes European style laws were only the criminals are armed (and its not like a hatchet or knife is any safer, there is no winner in a knife fight). Everywhere I'm allowed to be armed, its pretty safe, don't even need to worry about locking vehicles. In places where its illegal to defend yourself, I've had people try to steal every single motorized vehicle I have (a car and 2 motorcycles) within just 2 years. Didn't even lock my car while in Texas, wasn't needed, but here I sometimes have a switchblade and a vest in the few places I'm allowed to because that's at least better than just my fists and my scrawny weak body.

@@jakegarrett8109 You can blame zoning laws for American cities becoming wastelands.(Western) European cities are incredibly nice, despite what you may like to think. Same with Japanese cities. Here are the steps below on how to get Saved! 1. Believe that God sent His Son (Jesus) to die on a cross for your sins and that He rose again from the dead 3 days later. 2. Confess to Jesus that you are a sinner and ask forgiveness for your sins and Turn away from your sins. If you sin again after asking forgiveness of that sin, ask forgiveness again and try not to do it ever again. Jesus will forgive you! 3. Ask Jesus to come into your heart and your life and for Him to be your Lord and Savior forever. 4. I've lived in LA for over a decade. The situation is shit. Affordable housing and tiny homes are not the solution. During COVID many homeless were offered rooms in nearby hotels to stay in, most all of them declined due to the hotels having a rule that they weren't allowed to bring in drugs. These folks don't want to get off the street. As the man at 3:36 said, the resources to get out of it are already there. What we need is mental hospitals and asylums brought back.

There is a guy that makes videos, is from Venice Beach, and when the beach and Eccho park were cleaned, that was exactly the same thing I notice. People were offered places to stay but people refuse them cause "they can't live in a house". Like, WTF? Go live on the hills then, there are a lot of large places in Cali to live "free". But no. They want their "freedom" living in a popular area where they will get help from people who had no idea the damage they are causing. Seriously some people were protesting in Venice Beach cause they removed an old lady with dementia that was living in a tent full of rats! She was being taken to a hospital because she was clearly sick and is no way for an elderly person to live.

@tb45g Жыл бұрын
I don't think they're scum; they're twisted and scared. They're so addicted to drugs that it's completely normal for them. They're terrified of cops, who have only ever antagonized them (obviously for a reason but from their perspective they only do harm). I bet you literally everyone that guy knows or sees on a daily basis would hit the meth pipe like it's nothing. His perspective is competely warped due to his experience living on the streets like that, he can't imagine why someone wouldn't do meth. Also; homeless people are some of the easiest to take advantage of, abuse, and hurt. And there are plenty of people on the streets and off who want to do them harm. And there's really nothing to protect them. For that reason they become violent and aggressive, just to survive. As for why they don't accept help; there's lots of reasons. For one, they are completely addicted, and the help that they need involves painful withdrawal. Yet there aren't facilities that can help with that. Unfortunately telling someone to quit and even giving them some money won't help that. They need inpatient treatment. When they're high they get to live in bliss, if they quit it's possible they will never feel as good ever again. It's likely even if they do it won't be for a long time. Often times we hear statistics quoted of "X% of people refused help", but rarely do we hear what that help really is. It can often be insufficient, or come with stipulations that are unacceptable. For instance shelters often require you to leave everything outside except a backpack - anyone with a shopping cart full of their stuff would have to alow it to be stolen. Many shelters don't accept pets, and few people are willing to abandon their dog or other animal. Shelters can also have living conditions that are unsafe, such as sleeping unsupervised in a room shared with many other people, where they are vulnerable to being assaulted or robbed. It's no wonder some people prefer to find a quiet place to hide themselves and their belongings on the streets. That's not to say that those helping are doing a bad job or should stop what they're doing, it's still worth it for those that it can help. But it's a complicated situation with no easy solutions.

Second, why do you think as someone who has been in the situation you have and lived the experiences you have that creating more housing would help at all? And I am not saying this is an opinion you hold. I am just thoroughly curious because it seems that leaders of these non-profits and many people with left leaning political opinions truly think that getting these people housing would somehow fix the issue or at least be the start to fixing things. But we see in this very video how mentally disturbed these individuals are. So, how is putting a roof over their head truly addressing the issue at hand of street homelessness? And I specifically say street homelessness because as we saw in the video as well a perfect example of a gentlemen who successfully got off the streets. He even admitted that there are plenty of recourses to get off the streets if you want to. So why is it such a common or agreed upon belief that we must house these people? I'm really just trying to understand the thought process behind their thinking even if I mat not agree. Which is why I ask even someone like yourself. I'm not coming here from a judgmental view I am really just trying to understand.

Tyler, as a former teacher, I would like to gently suggest that if you’re not already, you take brain breaks between these pieces. You’re doing wonderful work. But I hope you’re taking care of your mental health and emotional state. There is data, and in my experience, bad mental states can have a huge affect, if you’re around it a lot. Thanks for your vids.

Homeless people don't like cameras because they are doing illegal activities and they don't want to go back to jail and of course they don't want people filming their suffering it's humiliating. Addiction is a fatal disease and it's hard to fight that on top of trying to get resources for help on getting sober and getting a home. And the government and politicians refuses to help. They need to help us homeless/mental/physically ill people. 😢

Too many people came to California homeless for better weather and more resources. It's not a trap unless you trap yourself with your own doing/mental health issues or drug dependence/addiction. California does not solicit people from other states to come here. It's.purely by choice and better weather conditions. Many organizations exist to help those that want to change get off the streets. Most are not ready or feel totally hopeless not trusting or non conformists. There are rules and regulations for such services. It's to the point now the only way to stop is by choice and if you don't accept then forced. One way or the other it must be stopped. Stop all shipments from Mexico and China for a few years and see what a big change will happen.

When I was younger, I was part of a youth ministry. They took us to Skid Row and we got to feed them. Yeah, it was scary. But there were tons of people there who recognized we were younger and were there to help. The stories... some are so very heartbreaking. If I were still in CA, I'd do it again even though I'm aware the crime is worse. Sometimes these people just need compassion. No, not all. But if I had to risk safety to save just one other human, it'd be worth it.

Sounds to me like we need to invest in more prisons. Sure seems like a lot of people more than willing to do violence at the drop of a hat, yet here we're pretending it's better to let them be out on the streets. Mhm. Decriminalization is certainly helping.

Very sad, and it can happen to anyone. The vast majority of street homeless will be dead in the next several years due to fentanyl overdose, poor physical and mental health due to fentanyl, or drugs related violence.

The saying, "You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make it drink" is also true for the street dwellers. They gather because the source of drugs is easily obtained, and in the city, so is the opportunity for crimes that yield money for them to buy the drugs. As the gentleman watching the door said, if one wants to get help to get off the streets, it's there for them. If they want to stay on the street to have access to their drugs, it's there for them too. The vast majority choose unwisely.

Kevin is such a gem. He reminds me of my ex (not in a weird way) just personality wise. I like the first guy’s invisible microphone. I’ve done homeless outreach (not faith based, but no problem with those who do!) for many many years. People are people, it’s really no more complicated than that. I’ve been homeless several times - like, sleeping rough, not couchsurfing - not everyone wants out, but my heart breaks for those who do. More often than not, those who “don’t want out” just literally cannot comprehend a better life, whether due to the neurochemical damage from drugs, trauma, or socioeconomic factors. Similarly, before I got fully clean, I couldn’t even envision a life without drugs to just get by the vicissitudes of being. Never been happier to be wrong about something!

I escaped Skid row. Was homeless twice. Living there was truly hell on earth. There’s help and hope but not in Skid row. I have been sober for a little over a year now, have two jobs, and I’m getting my life together again. I am convinced that the only way to get out of that hell is by the grace of God. Living like that changed my atheist heart into a truly grateful human being who has a deep connection with a Higher Power. My prayers go to those stuck in that hell.
