I am from brazil and I was a baby who started drinking Coca Cola when I was only 3 months old. My parents gave it to me in a baby bottle every day when i was only a baby.. in Brazil, 30 years ago there was a belief that Coca Cola could prevent and treat diseases and that's why parents gave their children Coca Cola. Today I'm 35 years old, I have autoimmune diseases and digestive problems associated with the consumption of Coca Cola but I can't stop drinking it. Today coca cola is very expensive in Brazil, so we are forced to drink imitations of Coca Cola whose ingredients are even worse. This is a common reality in underdeveloped countries

When I was a child I used to drink insane amounts of soda. Then in middle school I quit cold turkey decided to start drinking sparkling water. Sparkling water on the shelves is nothing like homemade (using a soda stream). What I do is I get crangrape or any other juice and mix it with the sparkling water (at a ratio of like 1:4). Tastes like soda but actually healthier. I refused to drink soda entirely until like high school (bc school clubs only had soda to drink). Now I have it on occasion. It does help that I absolutely hate the taste of Coke and Pepsi, lol. I used to have Crush and Sprite mixed with juice.

As someone with so many family members with diabetes in Mexico. I’d have to say lack of education pertaining to nutrition, and poverty go hand in hand. My family also thought diabetes was just genetic. But telling family members to stop drinking coke seemed like an offense because it’s something we’re so accustomed to. From going to the closest mini market, the taco stand close by or a party. You’ll most likely see a stack of coke bottles. Even with the labels they have on all the packaging it’s hard to inform family how devastating it can be to their health in the long run. In general most foods we eat are heavy. There’s no balance with fruits or vegetables. My grandpa passed away from diabetes before I was born. My father is prediabetic. I used to be prediabetic and after getting rid of unhealthy food I’m not no longer at risk.

As a Mexican myself, I agree that Coke is EVERYWHERE. Every local grocery store has a Coca Cola sign, that's how they're located. If you enter any household and there's not at least one empty Coke bottle, then that means you gotta go buy one or else you won't have a drink for lunch time. The most popular 20L water jugs are from the same company as well, I myself buy them and also have an almost empty 2L coke bottle. Dude I'm Mexican also, born, raised and living here all my life. I have a lot of relatives with obesity and diabetes and their consequences; and I can say without a doubt, that is a personal choice. All of this sickness and the consumption of sodas is the responsibility of every individual. Is just a matter of choices. The same way they choose coca cola, they can choose simple water or mineral water, or a tea... But people ADORE their sugar and the dope they get every time they consume it. Stop blaming companies, is the responsibility of every individual.

Coca cola's greed? No. It's your choice, people can choose to buy water instead of coke and coca-cola will benefit even more when people buying Ciel water instead of coke. It's cost even less to produce water bottle compare to coke. Also, blame your government as well, what are their actions? Instead of educating people about the bad side of Coke they Increase sugar tax, because more tax benefit the government while educating people cost real resource and money. I see people in video believe diabetes cause by anger in the family instead of the sugar in coke, and coke even take a role in their spiritual life, I can see either the government's effort to educate people failed or they don't even put any effort into that at all. And after the news of government instead of solving the root problem like wiping crime lord/cartel that cause harm to their lemon farmer all they can do is send police to protect the farmers. And that Alien thing few month ago, I have reason to doubt this government.

And just as you mentioned, exercise is only a small factor and diet lays a bigger role in causing diabetes

Coca-Cola was first created on May 8, 1886, by Dr. John Stith Pemberton, a pharmacist in Atlanta, Georgia. Pemberton developed the formula as a medicinal tonic, which he marketed as a cure for common ailments like headaches and fatigue. The original formula for Coca-Cola contained small amounts of cocaine. This was because one of its main ingredients was coca leaf extract, which naturally contains cocaine alkaloids. At the time, the inclusion of coca was not unusual, as cocaine was a common ingredient in medicinal products during the 19th century. It was believed to have health benefits and was not yet widely recognized as harmful or addictive. By the early 1900s, growing awareness of cocaine’s negative effects led Coca-Cola to remove the psychoactive component from the coca leaf extract. Around 1904, the company began using “decocainized” coca leaves to eliminate cocaine while retaining the flavor. They have obviously added some things back into the Coca Cola they sell in certain countries.

I’m from Mexico, and here we have “abarrotes” “Tienda de abarrotes”, which are family owned, they sign a contract, usually with Coca-Cola, Sabritas (Frito-Lay) or PepsiCo and those companies give those family owned stores posters, LED signs, refrigerators, merchandise, and that’s why in Mexico you can see many stores who look like Coca-Cola dispensaries but are in fact miscellaneous stores with fruits, meats, grains and other stuff which you can buy in stores

It’s the same in any country. Here in the US is the same. The coke refrigerators or signs are own by coke no the stores. I would say what’s killing the people is there ignorance of not even wanting to investigate further what causes there diabetes

Thank you, Tyler, for covering this topic as a Mexican myself. i can definitely relate to this big time! To add, I am also Elementary Physical Education teacher and man. I cover the topic of sugar in great detail. It is very important that my students understand the importance of living a healthy and physically active lifestyle. I talk a lot about moderation because I believe no one food is bad for anyone, but again, moderation is key. I will say one thing you might have missed is that in some parts of Mexico, towns might not have a purification system, and the water might not be safe to drink. Which in turn causes the people to buy coke because it is typically cheaper. I won't blame coke alone, but I will say they definitely factor with diabetes in Mexico for sure! Another factor is diet man Mexicans love our tortas, tacos, tamales etc. These foods taste amazing, but they are cooked in lard , butter, high fat oils, etc. Another key factor is education. Some of the poorer Mexicans might not have enough money for good education, which in turn hurts them with understanding the fundamentals of healthy eating. Trust me, as a fat kid, I used to drink 8 cans of Dr. Pepper a day! However, when I saw my grandfather lose his leg up to the knee and my doctor telling me I might get diabetes if I didn't stop drinking soda, man, that was enough for me! I will say their is a possible solution. COKE ZERO!! It has zero sugar and zero calories. Coke zero is 95% water, yes! Before anyone on here says, " But what about the chemicals or artificial sweeteners?" Well, guys, we have many human randomized control trials stating that coke Zero doesn't spike insulin nor that it has negative effects on humans. Literally, we would have to drink 168 cans of coke Zero in a day to actually have minimal negative health effects. I will cite Layne Norton PH.D in Nutritional Sciences from the University of Illinois.

This information is not accurate. First of all because of allergies there are problems when you say that "no one food is bad for anyone" Second would be diseases that prevent them from eating solid food or religion that prevents them from eating aswell. There are 3 types of natural types of sugar and more than 320+ chemical replacements. Your research is short term and based on free samples with revieuws. There was no screening, no real diagnosis, and no investigation on long term whatsoever. And also nothing on side effects like damage to the liver. Your liver needs to work 3.5 hours to digest a single glass of coke, You will literally die from drinking that much coke. And 168 cans of coke would be around 56 liter. If you drink 56 liter of WATER in a day you will also die, it's terrible advice. If you want to teach your students about health and food then just say that they need to have alot of variation. As far as food debates and studies go they are endless and nothing is a certain fact unless we are talking about the varation in your diet. So again, drinking the same thing the whole day is not good. Besides all this there are literally videos about scientists that claim that something is safe to drink but then refuse to drink it themselves and say to the reporter who is offering the beverage that they are "not idiots" There are whole scandals about this and the Flint case clearly showed us that these companies MUST produce positive scientific results for the stockholders and refuse to post anything negative. Now how much is Coca Cola invested in the stock market? I rest my case.

@@888young2 How about you learn that some people have a hard time giving up coke because it's addicting you know. To add some of these people are not made of money . Their diet reflects that clearly. Unhealthy cheap food is better for people who are not financially stable.

My grandmother came to the US from Mexico in 2017. And she was always obsessed with cola even when her health was depleting, she would still only want to drink Coca Cola. We obviously wouldn’t let her have it but behind our backs she would always manage to find and drink some. She passed in 2021 from her struggles with diabetes. It’s crazy how huge companies like Coca Cola see the effects that are happening but they still proceed to make their products work for our healths, because of selfishness.
