As someone with so many family members with diabetes in Mexico. I’d have to say lack of education pertaining to nutrition, and poverty go hand in hand. My family also thought diabetes was just genetic. But telling family members to stop drinking coke seemed like an offense because it’s something we’re so accustomed to. From going to the closest mini market, the taco stand close by or a party. You’ll most likely see a stack of coke bottles. Even with the labels they have on all the packaging it’s hard to inform family how devastating it can be to their health in the long run. In general most foods we eat are heavy. I see people in video believe diabetes cause by anger in the family instead of the sugar in coke, and coke even take a role in their spiritual life, I can see either the government's effort to educate people failed or they don't even put any effort into that at all. And after the news of government instead of solving the root problem like wiping crime lord/cartel that cause harm to their lemon farmer all they can do is send police to protect the farmers. One thing not mentioned in the video was that Vincent Fox was not only the president of Mexico he was also president of CocaCola Mexico in the 70s and later of latin America. Fox expanded Coca-Cola's market share in Mexico through marketing strategies, improving distribution networks, and establishing a strong presence in rural areas of Mexico. Thus coca cola overtook Pepsi, and soda consumption increased, and is the reason why so much cola is drunken in SA today, and especially Mexico.

Coca-Cola was first created on May 8, 1886, by Dr. John Stith Pemberton, a pharmacist in Atlanta, Georgia. Pemberton developed the formula as a medicinal tonic, which he marketed as a cure for common ailments like headaches and fatigue. The original formula for Coca-Cola contained small amounts of cocaine. This was because one of its main ingredients was coca leaf extract, which naturally contains cocaine alkaloids. At the time, the inclusion of coca was not unusual, as cocaine was a common ingredient in medicinal products during the 19th century. It was believed to have health benefits and was not yet widely recognized as harmful or addictive. By the early 1900s, growing awareness of cocaine’s negative effects led Coca-Cola to remove the psychoactive component from the coca leaf extract. Around 1904, the company began using “decocainized” coca leaves to eliminate cocaine while retaining the flavor. They have obviously added some things back into the Coca Cola they sell in certain countries.

Thank you, Tyler, for covering this topic as a Mexican myself. i can definitely relate to this big time! To add, I am also Elementary Physical Education teacher and man. I cover the topic of sugar in great detail. It is very important that my students understand the importance of living a healthy and physically active lifestyle. I talk a lot about moderation because I believe no one food is bad for anyone, but again, moderation is key. I will say one thing you might have missed is that in some parts of Mexico, towns might not have a purification system, and the water might not be safe to drink. Which in turn causes the people to buy coke because it is typically cheaper. I won't blame coke alone, but I will say they definitely factor with diabetes in Mexico for sure! Another factor is diet man Mexicans love our tortas, tacos, tamales etc. These foods taste amazing, but they are cooked in lard , butter, high fat oils, etc. Another key factor is education. Some of the poorer Mexicans might not have enough money for good education, which in turn hurts them with understanding the fundamentals of healthy eating. Trust me, as a fat kid, I used to drink 8 cans of Dr. Pepper a day! However, when I saw my grandfather lose his leg up to the knee and my doctor telling me I might get diabetes if I didn't stop drinking soda, man, that was enough for me! I will say their is a possible solution. COKE ZERO!! It has zero sugar and zero calories. Coke zero is 95% water, yes! Before anyone on here says, " But what about the chemicals or artificial sweeteners?" Well, guys, we have many human randomized control trials stating that coke Zero doesn't spike insulin nor that it has negative effects on humans. Literally, we would have to drink 168 cans of coke Zero in a day to actually have minimal negative health effects. I will cite Layne Norton PH.D in Nutritional Sciences from the University of Illinois.

This information is not accurate. First of all because of allergies there are problems when you say that "no one food is bad for anyone" Second would be diseases that prevent them from eating solid food or religion that prevents them from eating aswell. There are 3 types of natural types of sugar and more than 320+ chemical replacements. Your research is short term and based on free samples with revieuws. There was no screening, no real diagnosis, and no investigation on long term whatsoever. And also nothing on side effects like damage to the liver. Your liver needs to work 3.5 hours to digest a single glass of coke, You will literally die from drinking that much coke. And 168 cans of coke would be around 56 liter. If you drink 56 liter of WATER in a day you will also die, it's terrible advice. If you want to teach your students about health and food then just say that they need to have alot of variation. As far as food debates and studies go they are endless and nothing is a certain fact unless we are talking about the varation in your diet. So again, drinking the same thing the whole day is not good. Besides all this there are literally videos about scientists that claim that something is safe to drink but then refuse to drink it themselves and say to the reporter who is offering the beverage that they are "not idiots" There are whole scandals about this and the Flint case clearly showed us that these companies MUST produce positive scientific results for the stockholders and refuse to post anything negative. Now how much is Coca Cola invested in the stock market? I rest my case.

We used to use animal fat to make tortillas, cookies, bread etc now it is all chemically processed seed oils that are horrible for our bodies. Sugar and seed oils need to be addressed. The Government, Lobbyist and corporations need to be held accountable. Water should be clean, free for everyone as a human right.

Most might be too young to remember, but in the states this used to be quite common. There were storefronts everywhere with black and white signs with the Coca-Cola logo on them. About 40-50 years ago or more it was normal.

I'm impressed by this guy's multilingual ability. He knows the country language well enough before he arrives to interview the locals effectively in the native language. Nice going! Well, either that, or he pulls up Google translate really quick, but I don't see him using Google translate to understand their responses! Seems like he understands them just fine.

Of course he can speak Spanish, you can see that very well. In Europe for instance is abnormal to speak less than 2 languages

Mexican here. It’s funny, for any soft drink, we say “una coca” even if it’s not actually a Coke. I didn’t know it was solely a Mexican thing whereas other countries in Latin America they say “una gaseosa” for soft drinks. It’s very subtle, but I never noticed how it has even impacted our daily vocabulary.

I am proud to say that my New Year’s Resolution has been to cut out chocolate and sweets from my diet. I am currently in the process of building my body as a skinny guy by workout out at least 30 minutes each day and eating much more protein and vegetables to replace the sugar. To everyone out there, you can do it too. All it takes is the first step and motivation.

You can beat a sugar addiction with very high protein. My sugar addiction was knarly! Now it's non-existent! Eat protein....it doesn't turn to fat in the body. Just eat it alot and you will lose the desire for alot of sweets. They destroyed us with sugar but you win if you break the addiction!

I'm Brazilian and I started drinking Coca Cola when I was only 3 months old. My parents gave me Coca Cola in a baby bottle every day. I grew up in the 90's and back them, in Brazil there was a belief that Coca Cola was capable of preventing diseases and even curing some diseases. But the reality was that I became addicted to Coca Cola and today, at 35 years old, I have health problems related to the consumption of Coca Cola but i cant stop drinking it..ts realy sad
