This Is Why Stock Ableton Plugins Are BETTER!

After years of getting more and more plugins I finally figured out those two things:
1. Truly unique plugins are RARE. New plugins are to solve yet another "major problem", but the truth is that there's already a tool that takes care of that.
2. ...thats why if you just want to get things done and have fun with producing - USE STOCK PLUGINS. Sure, they won't replace that "analog character" but just like with third party plugins - stock Ableton devices are getting better and better

As a logic user, I'm jealous of the enveloppe follower plugin. But I like the general philosophy and that I can apply it to my DAW. Nice video, as usual. Love the smooth ending and everything before :D. Cheers.

Glad to have Logic user here, expected some FL guys coming for me 😂. Got my own short episode with it and it’s a great DAW. Did a quick search after your comment and I’m not sure if there’s really a free alternative of envelope follower in AU or even VST form. Pinning this comment so someone can correct me if I’m wrong

Atleast in studio one you can "sidechain" to almost any stock plugin. For example you could sidechain kick to EQ and modulate a certain frequency band. Maybe logic can do something similar?

Thanks for the vid, love that Collision Sub Boom! And I agree 100% that native ableton stock plugins are all you need. But I gotta say, as much as I LOVE Roar, it's def not a replacement for Saturn. You can have up to 6 bands that all react with modulation control over insane amounts of oversampling. Roar can be used in mixing but its not nearly as flexible as a multiband saturator solution. Roar instead excels at being a really fun new tool for modulating saturation. If I had one with for it, it would be to have more than 2 stages in serial mode. Want that 3rd stage in there!
@Zdrewe
@Zdrewe 3 ай бұрын
First of all, glad you like the video 🙏 judging by some comments I should’ve compared Roar to Izotope Trash but honestly I never been a big fan of it 😅. And yes you’re right, it’s definitely not a replacement, I assumed that some don’t have Saturn in their arsenal so Roar is a great introduction to plan and nail the multiband, parallel or serial distortion. As much as I’m proud and confident of what I said in this video, deep in my heart I can’t get rid of some of my fav plugins (Saturn included). But shhh don’t tell anyone 😉

couple things about ableton clipping. the glue compressors soft clip is closer to a digital clip, but instead of having sharp corners on the transfer curve, it has the tiniest round edges. saturators soft clip is a true rounded soft clip. but if you set it to digital clip, don’t turn on soft clip, and oversampling is turned off, it’s a true digital clipper, with less saturation. basically, you don’t have to turn on soft clip for it to actually clip the signal. if oversampling is turned off, it will clip the signal. enabling soft clip just adds more harmonics to that clip. the way saturators work is through clipping. clipping and saturation work the same way, just depends on what transfer curve you’re using

The soft clipper in glue compressor and saturator does absolutely the same thing. In saturator's case it's just another succesive curve the signal is gonna be driven through. Theoretically by switching the saturator curve to digital clipping and enable soft clip you'll get the exact same result as using glue compressor. Saturator just gives you more choices in terms of clipping, including an analog one, a digital one and another successive soft clipper if you want.

RBass does not add subharmonics like the "Sub Boom" preset does. It adds higher harmonics that trick your brain into thinking there is a fundamental sub frequency that does not exist. I agree. You can, and probably should, just use stock Ableton plugins. It would make for a more streamlined workflow and all of them pretty much are really high quality anyway. I don't really agree about the reverb but saying that I should note I never really found a software reverb that I really liked so this is a demerit point against both stock and third party reverbs in software. I wouldn't use either.

Hahah now I’m glad I said that’s my own opinion about HR. In fact, I feel the same way about third party reverbs. Majority comes down to shaping the tone after either with built in EQ or the one of you choice. That’s why I love HR and convolution reverb in Live since those allow you to turn anything into IR and get results fitted to your needs. If we speak about third party ones - Verbsuite Classic from Slate fits my needs from time to time

Kirchhoff is super versatile plus I like the fact that it can mimic the eq curves of analog EQs! Speaking of EQ8 - making it dynamic for tasks like blending kick and bass is easy but to make it more precise you need to make a copy of a track you want to follow the envelope with, then isolate/band pass the specific frequency and finally use env follower to trigger it with only this specific freq range. Long story short, a lot of work to do 😂

I also prefer stock devices in a lot areas. Sometime they have even big advantages, because Live doesn't compensate latency for the host transport information, tools like VolumeShaper 2/3, LFO Tool etc. which syncing to transport will be out of sync if you place a linear phase EQ or any other stuff that introduces latency, in front of them, while Lives own Shaper device is compensated. Then there is Push, having a device to control software synths like hardware is also an advantage. In the most cases for me third party tools are more about how things can be done and not what can be done. Technically Synplant 2 is not a very complex synth, but the way how i create sounds with Genopatch and its seed system, is a selling point for me, because its simply fun. Before buying stuff you should be question yourself if a third party tool does something Live can't do and if Live can do the same, is it too complicate for me to realize this with Live tools? ..do i like the workflow? ...do i understand whats exactly the point of wanting a certain plugin?

@@Zdrewe 11 suite, and yes im using stock LFO device that comes with ableton. and yes its a max for live device. thing is when i set it too high speeds it eats cpu. and when i use lfo in synths to modulate stuff it takes almost no cpu. so lowkey i wonder how to use that lfo, maybe i should download the less cpu intensive version someone made on the net. the power of max for live, which i soon might learn, cause im hella geeky lol.

As a developer of a cool host plugin that lets you play with all your plugins in unique ways, we hope you don’t delete all your plugins-ins. Also nothing else sounds like Valhalla reverb. Nothing sounds like R-Bass or OTT either. There are mountains of code behind all these plugins-ins and thus why nothing else sounds like they do. Find your sound, be unique and enjoy the adventure. Cutting off body parts just to cut off body parts limits the fun you can have, in my opinion. Also not cheap if you have 800 plug-ins like many of our customers!

So the envelope follower is just a long way to make a MB Compressor
@Zdrewe
@Zdrewe 3 ай бұрын
Correct but not exactly. It’s more of a dynamic eq like Fab Filter. Compression gives more control like ratio and knee. With Envelope Follower you can only control “attack” and “release” by adjusting rise and fall parameters
@rickmassimo6192
@rickmassimo6192 2 ай бұрын
@@Zdrewe Am I missing something? You put the envelope follower/EQ on the bass, right? Did you sidechain it to the kick and I missed it? (Also, dynamic EQ can be done on the free TDR Nova plugin and I think on the sidechain of the Ableton stock compressor if you pick an EQ curve. No?)

well... after watching this video it feels like using both fl and ableton is not professional. about the reverb: instead of vintage reverb there's another pluggin from valhalla called Supermassive, it's free and it's my go-to reverb pluggin; of course if i want more realistic space i'll obviously switch to a convolution reverb pluggin anyways, super useful video for 100%-ableton-users 👍
@Zdrewe
@Zdrewe 3 ай бұрын
Supermassive is goated ngl. Thanks for watching the video 🙏 but I don’t know what to feel about the “not profesional” part. There are professionals with millions of streams like Skrillex or Virtual Riot heavily utilizing stock devices as well as people with dozens of plugins, analog emulations and mixing consoles who only rely on those tools instead of focusing on what actually sounds good and having fun. Oh, second ones usually call themselves mixing gurus by posting videos online 😂

Stock FL plugins are way better, IMHO. Imagine struggling to precisely clip out certain frequencies in sampled audio, in Ableton, in the year 2024... I've been using both for the last decade, and I can't see why people use Ableton. I can accomplish the same, non-live things in FL Studio faster and more accurately, on my worst days, in half the time it takes in Ableton.

you are deaf? or you can't hear the clear tone and color difference It's not just that the plugins do the same thing because in the end all the compressors compress all the EQs and equalize, it's that each one sounds different and will give your instruments a different emotional character. Using the r bass is not the same as using the barg of dog, or the bx sub, or the dennise bass xl, they are all harmonic exciting for the bass; but each one has a unique sound and will make you feel different emotions
@Zdrewe
@Zdrewe 3 ай бұрын
Don’t know why people get so serious once you bring plugins vs stock devices 😅. Sure they all sound different but people are different as well. While some look for the specific tone, some had no idea what to look for and it usually ends up having dozens of plugins and no money left to pursue further research. Using stock plugins gives an idea how each processor works and once you want to make a step up, you get better idea of what to look for 😉
