Interesting stuff. I'd love the Metro to come all the way down to Blaydon/Metro Centre. That would make using the Metro much more easy for me. Would also be (geekily) quite fun to be able to take the Metro to 'the Metro (Centre)'.

Because of my job i am not reliant on the metro or any other public transport. i am glad that the expansion is going to the Team valley area. I live near there so i would be more inclined to use the metro. As said in this video it is a big employment area so glad that this area will have a better public transport link

Really nice video. I'm originally from Washington. Washington is desperate for a metro. It's been talked about for years and has never amounted to more than talk unfortunately. Would be great if it happens one day.

Hopefully so, with the metro flow project it’s one step closer to a metro to Washington

Interesting vid... I think I read the Northumberland expansion is going to be national rail which I think is a mistake. I accept that it'll run in to the mainline station, use different stock etc. but I think there's room for a middle ground to be found. Something like the London Overground, where it operates at a lower frequency than the tube but it's still included on the tube map. You could call it metro extra or something, operating a 20 minute frequency, but make sure it's on the map

Its a shame the Metro never made it to the West end, given the old North Wylam Loop went through Elswick, Scotswood, Lemington, Newburn and Wylam, I can only imagine how great of a line that would be had the tracks not been lifted!
@MarcDonald-t1t7 ай бұрын
I'm from Lemington and there used to be train lines for the coal trains and was a great opportunity to connect the metro to these areas and always thought they should have done that, but to be fair they made the lines and old pit heap where we used to ride out motorbikes a lovely area like they done with Derwent.
@markmooch3 жыл бұрын
I used to be able to get the train direct from east Boldon to the metro centre but then the metro took over the track and didn’t go to the metro centre which made it a bit of a step back in that regard.

3 year later review: - The Double-Tracking to South Shields went ahead, it didn't lead to a more frequent service because of the aging metro stock. Specifically two trains were removed from service and are basically used for spare parts. - Theres been delays in integrating the new Class 555 stock - The Northumbrian Line improvements are underconstruction, it will be a national rail service of two rains running a half-an-hourly service. (See Geoff Marshall's video). - The consultation on the Washington expansion is looking more for Pelow-Washington connection which would be a lot cheaper than a 'Southern Wear' route. - No news on the Metrocentre or West of Newcastle expansions. I think you're more likely to see trams down Scotswood Road than trying to squeeze a light urban rail in.
@alfiestewart63123 жыл бұрын
News ham haha. It's new sum btw. northern rail said they would initially be running trains down the northumberland line and might integrate ticketing into the metro allowing interchange at northumberland park. then you might as well just make it metro so that you can go much further afield then to newcastle where you'll have to change and buy different tickets. im trying to take this up with the local mp and councillors.

Two things I would say, firstly, extend beyond St. James. Secondly, reinstate the old reversal sidings at Benton, but project them forward to Killingworth.
@JordanReeve3 жыл бұрын
I wish they would extend St. James’s but the arguments are always about it now being blocked by foundations or too expensive and hilly to build through fenham

There isn't room for another track alongside the ECML let along two. You could have a West End route to Slatyford/West Denton but the Stagecoach 62/63 cover most of that area

Metro connections have been promised for the West End of Newcastle for many decades now. The East End has been so well served by the Metro system since it's inception. Us Westenders just don't believe the promises any more. As an aside, despite the Metrocentre being less than five minutes across the river by car from the West End, getting there by bus involves bussing into Newcastle City Centre, then back out west again on the other side of the river, oftentimes a 1 hour commute. This is so frustrating for the thousands of Westenders who work at the Metrocentre, many of whom can almost see the it from their homes, but can't walk or bus to work coz the road network around Scotswood Bridge isn't pedestrian friendly and there are NO bus services running from the West End to the Metrocentre (despite it being IN the west of the city). We are the forgotten side of Newcastle. It's no wonder resentment rises year on year.

If you pause at 7:10 Washington station is to the left of the new build developments, my home and office can both be seen on that one map so an extension to Washington would be perfect for me, sadly, I doubt it would ever happen, it’s been spoken about for many years, usually when there’s a general election coming up. Majority of the old tracks were removed some years back which I took as being the final nail in the coffin for the extension. Fingers crossed it actually happens though.
@MarkHewitt19783 жыл бұрын
The Ashington line is not Metro. It's National Rail, not part of the Metro network. It's not unclear it's stated in the proposals. Apart from anything else it's using diesel trains as the line isn't electrified.

I heard Washington extension which would create a loop of some sorts like going beyond South Hylton, extending it beyond St James I’ve heard before problem would be money

The solution seems to either come from Newcastle central station or extending through St james' both have challenges. And government funding would need to be applied for to construct it all

Surely the answer to the Washington extension is for BOTH to take place, not either-or: Maybe two stations in the "low-density" housing, then a further station in the commercial area? That would surely of itself generate journeys.

The metrocentre would be better served by the metro if the existing heavy rail line towards Newcastle were converted and extended using a tunnel to Gateshead Interchange via the Team Valley using the 'Bensham Curve'. If this were completed, I would suggest that Heavy rail services from Hexham/Carlisle could proceed from the Metrocentre to Newcastle via a new bridge that links with the existing railway 'stub' from the West of Central Station. These upgrades would slash rail journey times between Metrocentre and Newcastle (currently a tedious 12 minutes when not stopping at Dunston) and provide Metro links for routes with a preexisting high demand (such as the X66 bus from Gateshead Interchange to Metrocentre which runs every 10 minutes).
