Type 1 Bulk tape Eraser from Lidl!!!
I was in Lidl the other day when I spotted this and as it was a heavy duty magnet I wondered if it would be strong enough to erase cassette tapes, well this is how I got on.

On the Queen Ferri Balalt it clearly erased everything from the Ferric particles but nothing on the Cobalt the first time around so in and out would be the sound.

Yeah. This is a really bad idea. As the other poster says, you'll end up with a polorised tape which will magnetise your tape heads.

Well Sony among others made tape erasers that worked in EXACTLY the same way. And if you wipe a tape and leave it for a while the chances of the odd tape causing any damage is minimal. Id have thought a modern cheap cassette deck with a fixed magnet erase head right next to the play / record head would cause more of an issue. Plus this video was done with a bit of Humour in mind too..

This is not a good idea...using a permanent magnet to erase tape will potentially damage the heads of the tape recorder. You require a an electro magnet to erase tapes. Research the physics before advising.

Don't take life so seriously... Actually Sony made a cassette tape eraser based on a permanent magnet, The vast majority of 'new' cassette decks also use a permanent magnet. If you were to erase 100 tapes with a magnet and then use them one after another, there may be some residual magnetism that could potentially build up in the deck. However if you just want to wipe some old tapes as you don't want the content to get 'out there' then its perfectly adequate.
