Delighted that we are having the new Type 26s - please name one HMS Sheffield. The name Sheffield has a long tradition with the Navy - but more so the memory of the Falklands. To name a Type 26 as Sheffield will sent out the message, that we may have lost a ship, but our spirt will never be beaten. God Save the Queen and the Royal Navy.

The Sheffield was lost in the Falklands because of the incompetence of some of the watch officers. This was covered up in the aftermath of the war. Essentially, the duty officers watched the exocet coming towards them and did nothing. Sometimes it's not about the ship, but the crew.

Everyone in the comments saying we should build more than 8 while i agree we could do with more ships. Im just hoping they dont cut it down to reduce the number like they did with the type 45's. Also i dont think we could afford to have more than 8 on the defence budget as its not just a case of purchasing the ship you also have the cost of running the ship aswell as any updates needed. Then you have the fact as soon as the last one is built they will most likely be working on/designing there replacement as the average expected operational effectiveness is about 30 years for a modern warship. Then we have the issue of man power shortage at the moment. What im just hoping for is that the type 31 is as good as they say it is or better and the build about 10 of them using these for escort/patrolling areas and leaving the 45's and 26 ships for aircraft carrier battle groups.

It still has to come by sea and the threat is always that Europe will get eaten up by Russia and they will be able to close the door behind us and in front of us. In WW2 supplies came from the USA and we nearly lost that battle against the U-boats. So having a weak navy would be a big sign around our necks saying "come and ***k me". We have no internal enemies of the slightest significance except of course the people who want to cause shit by dividing us - which is possibly the most unpatriotic thing anyone can do.

The Type 26 Frigate looks impressive-at least on paper-but the MOD and Royal Navy have to make a firm decision on buying this ship. Delays, bureaucracy and debates on who gets to build it do not help the UK’s defense, especially in these uncertain times. Nobody wants any war or confrontation, but having sufficient deterrence and readiness help keep that peace. BAE can talk about this ship until the cows come home, but it remains for the government to act and not cancel the planned number of frigates.

Always supposed to have the latest state of the art warships and yet back in 82 during the Falklands conflict we were told the same, but still the Argentinian airforce were picking us off like sitting ducks. I’m not convinced that things would be any different today especially against bigger and better forces.

I have a concern about these ships, we seem to be concentrating on relief facilities, instead of a ship which is capable of fighting a war. The US, China and Russia all build warships armed to the teeth ready to fight wars, the UK seem to be emphasising a ships ability to carry out emergency relief operations. The UK is also only building single role ships, ie Type 26 ASW role, Type 45 destroyer - anti aircraft role. Where are the warships capable of destroying other warships? The RN has extended the life of Harpoon ASM but this and sea ceptor do not have the range of some of the Russian, Chinese ASM's.

May I ask, how many missile launchers does it carry? It may have a highly "advanced" radar system currently available but what good is the ship at war if it ran out of missiles soon? I mean, the American Arliegh Burke class, a 30 year old design, knocks a punch with 96 missile launchers, the Korean Sejoun the great has more than 100( plus 16 instead of the usual 8 Harpoon), now which one would you rather send off to fight the enemy, assuming that all missiles carried in these ships are similar?? Or let's look at it this way, how about a "Type 26 +" with everything exactly the same, but with a lengthened hull with double the no. of vertical launchers, and 16 LRASM? Anything wrong with that?? I think it is well worth the extra cost.....:)

@@jimmysavile69 thanks for the reply. now this type 26 is a 8000 ton class ship, but only has 48 missle launchers. That is not a very effective use of space, is it? Look at the 🇺🇸 Areligh Burke class, just a bit heavier at 9600 tons, but double the fire capacity(ok assuming similar launch and missle system), I think I would use the Areligh Burke to fight an enemy...

@@michaelwong4303 and the added cost of procurement and maintenance is a major disadvantage. Any major conflict that would require such vessel to be armed with hundreds of missiles (basically ww3) would obviously escalate into nuclear warfare, which makes the conventional weapons redundant in the first place. So there's absolutely no point in building and operating ridiculously overcomplicated weapons expecting a situation that would make them irrelevant in the first place.

Load up the entire of each side of the mission bay with fixed placement air defense missiles. Modify the top so you can easily remove ii then use a crane to drop in silos so you can add in long range air defense missiles... Though i don't know if it needs any special armor around the thing or if the weight of it will throw the ship off balance, but if they could turn the thing into a quick swap air defense frigate.... Shiiittt who would need anything else... Not saying anti ship cause them missiles weight much more... at least i think they do... Put lasers, seawiz, or one of em rotating anti air systems in the hanger and have it slide out on rails to the rear of the ship when needed. i mean, you wont be able to store a helo but it's no longer the role... Laser on middle rail, anti air on the left and right rails.... Or shitt maybe that laser needs it's own generator so the entire hanger is stuffed with a roll on generator to power that sucka.

Unfortunately Davies Shipyard was recovering from a bankruptcy when the National Ship Building Strategy was originally formulated which led to Irving Shipyards getting the contract, but to be fair Canadian shipyards were used to working on ships under 5,000 tonnes displacement throughout most of the 20th century and the first decade of the 21st century. You can see Irving, Seaspan, and Davies struggling to upgrade their facilities to accommodate the construction of 6,000 tonnes Arctic OPVs, 20,000+ tonnes JSS and Polar Class 2 Icebreakers, and the 8,000 tonnes Type 26 CSC, slow delivery times and cost overruns were inevitable.
