The kind of graph and analysis we can do with specific data is related to the type of data it is. In this video we explain the different levels of data, with examples.
0:00 Intro
1:07 Nominal
1:46 Ordinal
2:43 Interval/Ratio (scale. quantitative)
3:23 Graphical representation
4:05 Example - Helen's survey about chocolate
We recommend you try the examples in the companion video, Types of data - practice identifying, Shopping Mall example

Thank you for this video! I got here from your blog where you say that Likert scale can be (sometimes) treated like something continuous-like to compute the mean. It does feel right. I am working now on a project where I have participants rating utterances (1-9) for comprehensibility and accentedness. Now this does feel like assigning a score and I think this is also a case where it is OK to compute the mean (or normalize with z-scores) but I would love to hear your opinion about it.

That is a really interesting question. Strictly speaking, IQ is ordinal, as we can't guarantee that the gap between 100 and 110 represents the same difference in intelligence (whatever that is!) as between, say 110 and 120. However, it is usually treated as interval data. It depends on whether you are a "nit-picking mathematician" or a "sloppy social-scientistt."

The difference isn't usually relevant in statistics, so I didn't confuse things by adding that level. Ratio data has a meaningful zero value, and ratios of numbers make sense. For example temperature is interval data as the difference between 30 degrees and 40 degrees is the same as the difference between 40 degrees and 50 degrees. However it is not meaningful to say that 40 degrees is twice as hot as 20 degrees. So temperature is not ratio data. Length in mm, is ratio data. 20mm is twice 10mm.

As it shows in the video, this is a matter of opinion. Mathematical statisticians say that you can only apply non-pararmetric analysis to LIkert scales. However much psychology research uses Likert scales as if they were interval data. Combinations of Likert scales form indices, some of which are validated and used extensively as if they were parametric or interval data. I think an awareness of potential issues is important, but the choice is up to the discipline in which you are operating.

I really enjoyed this video. You reached may good conclusions that I've struggled to understand while study the nature of data and information. Like you, I spend a lot of time looking at graph types, the data they show (property and attributes that make them unique), and strength and weakness. Here are some thoughts you may not have considered. Nominal data is not about frequency or percentage, it is a concept. Concepts have qualities that define qualifications to be categorized as "the concept." Counting and percentage is how you can quantify a nominal data set. The mean is not a way to quantify a nominal data sets, same goes for the median (middle) in a nominal data set, but the mode is an option to describe an "average." Ordering and interval is not a part of the concept of nominal. Nominal is the average/normal/typical definition or concept. An ordinal data set is a nominal data set that has an attribute of connectivity, sequencing, between concepts. Ordering or Directionality (Example, winner or loser) Median is a measure of typical/ normal/average with the addition of a new dimension of information found in directionality or ordering. Interval data is about distance, a weighting on directionality. A set of interval data is, as the definition of a set, can be a quantified as a percentage and counted. As it is ordinal, it has directionality. As it has interval, weighting on the connectivity, it has a dimension of length in it's information. The average satisfaction rating.... as a #. It was ordinal, until you turned it into a interval. Also, pie chart is not for ordinal data..... It can be, it really depends on what information you are trying to show. Information relating ordering can't be graphical show in the same using a pi chart. Pi charts are a percentage of a whole data set or subset. If you feel I'm missing details in my logic, I'd be interested in your reasoning.
