I am a sucker for hd animations, especially semi to perfectly photo realistic, and this makes me want to design something, but I don't have a good enough computer to do anything

It's okay, you can start with any specs :) I started on a really crappy 1GB RAM PC and slowly progressed until I was able to afford a decent one. For the rendering part, you can watch my video on How to Render Huge Scenes for Free, and you should get an idea for what works best for you. Keep creating! 💪

Haha yeah, it's Blender's mascot actually. And they put it there among the primitives to be used as a test model similar to the infamous utah teapot. A good reference object should have interesting curves, so the monkey head is perfect for this ;)
