Excellent analysis! A bit of history and a bit of today. I've used most of these styles of lights but still your presentation taught me a lot!

I got some experience with lighting working at a community theatre as the light and sound operator during every dress rehearsal and show, but it seems it's a lot more complex for filming. With a lot of theatres you just need two or three configurations (per play). Thanks.

Great video. I would consider lowering the volume of the music and choosing a less upbeat track as well, it simply distracts from the video itself.

I shot a music video in Hawaii for a group called GENTRI around a campfire. Luckily the group kept the fire going. It was super tricky because I had to get solo shots of each of the members of the group around the fire, plus group shots, also dealing with the sun setting. By the end of the shoot my ISO was cranked up uncomfortably high. The whole thing made for an interesting edit with a lot of post production work to try and match the brightness/color of shots so it felt like the sun was setting throughout the video and not jumping back and forth.

@heyjustj
@heyjustj 3 жыл бұрын
@@ryanmoody6198 got to the location later than planned, took longer than anticipated to get the fire going, etc. It was somewhat an informat video shoot when compared to others. Anyway we had much less time with the sun. Would have been nice to have but ultimately we had planned to shoot with more daylight and not needing lights. Still all worked out and their fans liked the video.

Hi, thanks for the great video. I'm deciding bw a few models. Does more led beads automatically mean more power? One has 112, another 120, and another a little over 190.
@Silthewild
@Silthewild 2 жыл бұрын
The power draw doesn't directly mean more output. You must look for light measurement in the info (for example "lux at 3m") and take the highest.

Thank you A LOT for this video, it helped me understand about the differences of a different lights, but i have a question - can LED lights be used with gels? And what sould i consider buying for making videos in different locations? Does the shape and size of an LED lamp matters? And should i consider buying more than 1 LED light or can i have 1 main LED light and some additional background lights that are current in the enviroment and just put some gels on them? For example , i'd use one main LED light to light a talking subject and and put some basic lamps in the background with gels to create a good atmosphere? Thanks in advance!
@anthonynajera7716
@anthonynajera7716 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Catherine, 1. Yes, you can use Gels on LED lights. Do it all the time. Many LED lights now offer RGB functionality, so may not need gels. 2. Tough to say, maybe something with possible battery power or a light that is easily portable. It really depends on what youre making, budget, and features that are important to you. 3. Yes, thats a good place to start. I have various lights from LED panels to COB led lights to tube lights. Which I use as my key light or even at all depends on the location, subject, and what I'm trying to do. Lights are like cars. Every car can take you from point A>B, but some will be suited for different areas, conditions, etc. Hope that helps!

I liked the old carbon arc brutes. Haven’t seen one used for probably more than twenty years now, the last time was at St. Pancras Station in London before it was converted for Eurostar use. Don’t know what the production was.

Kinoflos are flicker-free. That is part of the higher price point. Cheap fluorescent fixtures that run at 60 cycles will flicker at high frame rates.

Incandescents aren't at full brightness as soon as you turn them on, by definition. They have to warm up, and the brightness increases considerably over time. A lot of it. That said, there are a tonne of top-tier cinematographers that still swear by old school redheads and blonde tungstens, as they're worth the tiny bit of extra setting up time to make them safe. Don't be so quick to tell people to write them off.

@@hwcentertainment Yes we do. Color rendition is still better than anything else. BUT LEDs are really starting to close the gap! I just finished a feature last week and although I had some tungsten with me, it's the first time I never actually used them on set. My first full LED show.

Is the Aputure 600D getting in to HMI territory? I know my 300 is bright enough to simulate exterior daylight in some cases. I'm considering making the 600d investment as opposed to a clunky old HMI

4:08 that's cute, the thought that in any REAL producing would wait 15 minutes for lighting to wrap. Lol we start wrapping hours before they call wrap or else we would be wrapping for hours. Hahaha. That's funny, he actually thinks Production is willing to wait that long so you don't burn your hand. As if they could give a shit
