I was interested in music so my mother took me to the nearest music school. My parents thought I will play some kind of small stuff for fun, kind of reed pipe or something like that. But it happened that there was a violin teacher when we came and when she did my audition she said I will better play violin. I was 6 years old and even didn't know how violin looks like. And because of this curiosity I said I will go to violin lessons. It was something like occasional decision, but also a very big luck. Now I'm playing violin for 15 years now and although I'm amateur, but good enough to play in university orchestra and earn money as street musician. About parents, though, I didn't stop playing thanks to my mom. She is a school teacher and she always got me motivated, and if not her work I will end in less than 3 years playing and she was always encouraging me like a positive parent. My father is not a musician, but his critics where always good advice. He was caring but also strict enough to tell me were I am playing wrong. And when winning a competition or having a good concert there were always my parents to be first to greet me. Love them so much!

My dad tells me I don't practice enough, that I'm not playing good, that I need to feel the music more. Usually when I read the music for the first time. He told me if I don't want to "practice more" I should just quit because I play the violin terribly, out loud in a silent lobby at my music school while all of the parents were there. I get no encouragement, and whenever I actually feel proud of something he just makes me feel negative again? This is why I don't practice in front of people or do recitals. sucks

My dad is kind of an uncaring kind but he's not the kind that doesn't want me to play or sing anything, he just doesn't really care much what I do and is usually just focused on what he has to do. And my mom enjoys hearing me sing/play but she just isn't very knowledgeable about music herself so she doesn't give advice she just cheers me on like the positive parent example.

I remember when I was 11 I was learning a long version of the William Tell Overture on my flute and my dad was being so fucking nasty about it saying if i was the best in my section the other kids must have to be silent because I was so horrible and that I couldn't play and by the time he got me crying he'd start yelling and then expect me to immediately start playing again, like I'm sorry I can't see the sheet music through my frustration tears and if you're such a flute expert why don't you come over here and play this, with your ample knowledge on the clarinet (with its completely different note fingerings) the flute should be no issue. Thank god my mom was supportive and was actually encouraging to me even when I messed something up and was never a perfectionist about everything. I'm a good flutist now because of her methods (and legitimate knowledge of the flute) instead of my dad's screaming.
