1. Puny wheel-powered rover. 2. This is taking forever, let's put some jet engines on it to speed things up a bit. 3. Jets take too long to spool up, not responsive enough. Rocket engines it is! 4. Okay, yes, it did explode quite a bit more than could be considered optimal. What if we - and hear me out here - what if we tried _lots of little rocket engines_ instead?

So, I was mildly dissapointed when no.9, the Mech, was just a random mech SWDennis found online, thinking he missed an opportunity... Then no.10 happened... makes sense that Jebsy Danger gets his own private category where he can look down on all of the other mechs, like, "look what they have to do in order to achieve a fraction of my power!" Lol.

The hedgehog. Just a lot of legs all over the lander and several reaction wheels. Then just roll the entire lander wherever you need.

I did a version of that, but it was shaped like a barbell and i just rolled everywhere. Thanks to 2 rungs of 24 aircraft lander wheels, i could change the diameter of one side or the other to steer, and it was basically indestructible below 60f/s.

I definitely did this before. Lander tipped over so I had to roll it to a slope steep enough for the weak RCS + reaction wheels to turn it pointy end up and flamy end down again and take off.

My first rover is always a small airplane without the wings, using fixed landing gear and Juno engines. It takes too long to get to powered wheels on the tech tree and I want that sweet space centre science right now.

My favorite rover type is I build a motorcycle. Takes some practice to drive cause you have to learn into the turns to avoid flipping, but its a lot of fun. The mechjeb rover auto-stabilization does help a lot though.

There is also the "already large science rover that turns into a full fledged wheeled base with lab, space for 45 kerbals, mining rig, communication tower and (just-in-case) nightclub", just because the first iteration was large enough to necessitate a monstrous rocket with a bit of dV left, so why not adding some stuff?

My first rover isn't on this list - it was a Minmus rover built before I knew about putting the reaction wheel controls and movement controls on separate keys, so it flipped and rolled round corners and couldn't go very fast without taking off. 0/10.

Personally, no matter the celestial body, whether it's a high-gravity body like Eve or Tylo, or a low-gravity body like the Mun or Minmus, I'd much rather fly, glide, and/or hop over to my next destination using a space plane, lander, or hovercraft than I would drive a much slower rover there that's at risk of tumbling over when oversteering at too high speeds, which I find tends to be especially prevalent on lower-gravity worlds like Minmus. However, as far as rovers are concerned, I'm personally more interested in the racing designs. Then again, I'd probably design my rovers to be hybrids with landers and/or space planes, so that I could opt to jump and glide over obstacles if needed, and with extra-strong reaction wheels, RCS, and/or control surfaces, so that I could better control my racing rover at the kinds of high speeds that would've easily made it tip over on turns. Long story short: I'm too impatient to want to rely on typical rover designs.

I have a soft spot for the "flying brick" rover concept; your basic slightly ungainly looking rover core + basic wheels + single command seat, but with enough rocket power and balloon tanks bolted on that it can land from orbit and return to dock with your station. Flying your kerbals straight down from/up to orbit aboard the aerospace equivalent of a mobility scooter just feels like a very Kerbal way to do rover missions. :)

The Gilly rover: has thrusters on its top side to actually hold it down against the surface. The mountain climber: same as the Gilly rover, but uses jet engines and has TWR > 1 to hold it down against _any_ surface on Kerbin no matter the slope.
