Thanks, Joe, for your kind and very detailed review of my book and showing some of the steps in producing it.

I am a sometimes math teacher (mostly I prefer to teach physics, but I can do both). When I create math documents, I prefer to use LaTeX. But I'm only 48. A math teacher friend of mine who just passed away this week did not have a typewriter like this. She never got comfortable with technology either, so she didn't use LaTeX or even the awful equation editor in Word. She had a filing cabinet full of worksheets she had created by hand. I wish I had recognized what a resource that was when she retired. I have a number of old math textbooks, and it is fascinating in some of them to see that they were created on a typewriter. I knew such typewriters existed, but I had never seen one. Thank you for this!

This SG1 in italic that I picked up recently has a square root like that, division, degree, and a ^ but not the other math symbols. I wonder what it’s purpose was? Any comments are welcome. This is pretty cool stuff, JVQ!

Thanks for introducing this book and your ways to type the mathematic expressions! With my German customer's support to arrange an DHL delivery from German to Taiwan, I received the Olympia SG1 with 11 out of 24 Greek alphabets(O+/ can be combined 'psai'), while Geman alphabets has a "ß" already. In addition, there is an Integral sign for " ∫ ". The owner was a mathematic professor at a southern Germany university. There is also a surprise since the seller was my colleague from previous company. I assume this machine is for preparing the texts for Calculus beginner. Please let me know if I should share the pictures/video via link. Wish you and all a happy weekend! ---Greeting from Taiwan, Manfred Chen

I definitely remember the smell of ditto fluid! Pretty much my whole school career was bathed in the smell of ditto copies. When I was in High School (early 70s), photocopiers were becoming common, but they were too expensive for most school worksheets and such. In college (mid 70s) ditto had become a thing of the past.

Really interesting book and subject. And very informative video as well! Already ordered the book and it will be here (Italy) on Monday! Amaz-ing. The only regret is that all the magnificent layouts are very difficult to reproduce on common machines, expecially the square root sign. I have never seen in the flash such a specialized unit, only in pictures; same goes for the droves of special machines for foreign languages or with unusual characters for other uses. I suspect my own Remington Quiet-Riter survived as it has the 1 numeral, unusual at the time in Italy in portables and available only on imported units as far as I know. When I was still at the university (decades ago) something was still typed (then mostly photocopied by xerox and canon units, already ubiquitous) and I still remember that, even back then, algebra lines were often seen as eyesores.

Now you see why I was so excited to get into desktop publishing with PageMaker on the Macintosh in the early '90s. Yeah, I'm buying the book.

I can only imagine the difficulty & focus needed to type all these math equations

Yes, there has to be a lot of planning ahead to make it right. I wonder how many pages were retyped.

The first draft was laid out by computer in this case and typed from there. Back in the day, math like this would have to be typed once just to get all the measurements and then typed in final form. The computer version made it easier to get feedback before I typed the camera-ready version. But it still took a lot of focus, retyping and error-checking.

Okay, so how many of y'all put this book in your Amazon cart, due to Joe's great explanation and fascination of the typewriter.....and maybe have a middle school or high schooler in your family. Love it!

I hate algebra but. I love the look of this book. We had ditto machines except they were Banda brand in school and when I was in the Scouts. I wish someone would produce a book like this for screen play format. As in the best way to do it on a typewriter as opposed to celtx
