Great tip Joe, thanks! I agree absolutely on supporting your local typewriter repair shop. Bremerton Office Machine Company, first run by the late Mr. Montgomery, and now by Paul Lundy, charges very reasonable prices, and achieves things with knowledge, skill and tools that I don't have. All the best!

I just bought a used Underwood 112 and am trying to find more info about it. Do you happen to have any resources? Google isn't being all that helpful. :)

Made by Silver-Seiko in Japan, branded as Underwood. Looks like it takes a rare cartridge ribbon, from the one picture I could find on eBay. www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-Underwood-112-Manual-Typewriter-w-Cover-WORKS-/383859610596?hash=item595fd0d3e4%3Ag%3AQBQAAOSwWu1f2PBE&nma=true&si=%252FYN3Iv3dfROiMJuaKlxCSOLqAXE%253D&orig_cvip=true&nordt=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557

Do you consider typewriters with a bottom panel superior to those that lack this protection?
@Joe_VanCleave5 жыл бұрын
It’s not that important. I’d take a great type sans bottom over a mediocre Tyler with a bottom panel.

I agree that supporting my local typewriter repair shop is ideal but having a platen replaced on my Remington Streamliner in shop is simply too much. I received a quote of $180 for the platen, $60 for replacement feet, and about $100 for labor for a total of $340 before taxes. At that price I can't justify such a service. At the moment I'm considering simply performing these replacements myself. What do you all think? Are these average prices?
@Joe_VanCleave4 жыл бұрын
If the platen is from JJ Short & Sons, the shop's charging you about 2X what it would cost you directly. Ditto the replacement feet. I.E. 50% markup.
@CrispyFrenFry4 жыл бұрын
@@Joe_VanCleave yeah, they did mention using JJ Short and said with the price of postage the price is right. As for the feet, I saw a listing on Ebay of $40 and think I'll try to service my own machines. Its regrettable because I want to do business with them but they are cost-prohibitive. I suppose it has to do with it being the only shop in Los Angeles.

I have the same model. I like it okay, but the keys feel kind of cheap.

You should name your Olivetti-Underwood 21 the “motorcycle writer” due to its past history. Terrible pun, I know. :)
