Bigger than an ultra-portable, smaller than a full-sized portable. Joe reviews the Remington Ten Forty.

Many, many thanks for this video. I bought a Ten Forty a couple of years ago and would have become much better acquainted with it if I’d had your video at the time. It needs a bit of love that I am now inspired to give. (In the interim, it has made a popular toy for my toddler... now that’s rugged 😂)

I have one bought in 1972 by my grandmother, that gifted it to my mother to make her high school works. Years later, in the 80s, my father used it as journalist.

The typewriter that started me down the path of collecting was a Remington Starfire, which is basically a bright red version of a 1040. You did a great job restoring that Remington back to full operation Joe!

Since Remington owned Torpedo at the time, its got Torpedo guts. Types great, I like it a lot. Very under appreciated in my opinion.

Thanks for another great video Joe! The inside or the Ten Forty case had some padding that disintegrated with age. That is possibly why you covered it. I think it was pre-TWVS times (2016), but I seem to remember a video about that. The dust from the padding isn't easy to get out of the machine, so maybe it wasn't a video, but my own nightmares.

I just bought a 1040 for my first typewriter but the carriage skips. I was hoping this video might help me understand why, but I still learned quite a bit. Thanks!

Great video! I also have a Ten Forty with the same problem of the supply spool not turning freely. How on earth do you access the set screw to loosen the bushing and clean the supply spool shaft? Also, what did you use to de-grease it? Thanks so much!

WORD OF WARNING: I snapped my case in half after days of trying to figure out how to remove it and found this video. Sooooo definitely don't do it if you don't want to break the case. Around the 4:04 mark he talks about it. That being said I can super glue it back together...or not because it would suck to remove it again lol

Loved the video! I was wondering if you could help. You stated at the beginning of your video that one of the problems was that the ribbon color selector. For my ribbon selector, no matter the setting, the ribbon won't go all the way down. Do you have any advice to fix this?
@Joe_VanCleave

Try cleaning the ribbon lift with alcohol and cotton buds. Sometimes they are bent because a ribbon gets tangled and someone pulls on it hard, bending the fragile metals parts.

I have 2 Remington Monarchs which are internally the same but with metal panels. One of it has strange line lock which can be used as a stealth lock.

We have a very nice looking ten forty (Made in Holland) in original, almost pristine case (Made in West-Germany). The problem is that when I type, it does not move on to the next space... Am I missing a setting?

@@lmm8521 There are adjustments called "on feet" and "motion" that set the positions of the upper and lower case so they both print evenly and at the same height.

Try Ribbons Unlimited, I think they have replacement Remington ribbons, perhaps they also have the rings.

As per Typewriter Data Base: Mar 1925: Discontinued #10 "L". Began #10 "S". So it's a continuation of the #10 series. Not certain what features were changed over previous versions of the #10.

Mechanical, manual TYPEWRITERS, unlike "silicone based" writing tools employed today, these older, mechanical ones actually require their users to THINK about the complete process! YOU have to set the margins, line spacing, correct y ok ur own spelling BEFORE y ou u commit the word to the page, etc. Now? If you're like me, self taught, and NEVER took a formal typing class? You REALLY have to think about the whole process. Computers and dedicated word processors are GREAT for people like me... THEY do all the format thinking for us but... That's the trouble! Plus, what about if your area suddenly gets hit with an extended power "black out"? How long will your laptop last before it dies, starved for free flowing electrons? With my old, reliable, manual ROYAL and OLYMPIA brand machines? I can keep CLICKETY CLACKING away to my heart's content even by candlelight if necessary. That's the ultimate attraction. It's the literary version of the "STEAM PUNK" movement. Now? Is electronic typing quieter on the eardrums and easier on the fingers? Yes. However a good highly skilled manual machine typist can match his or her electronic or computerized machine counterparts for both quality, accuracy and speed EVERY time in a head to head competition. There's just something amazingly satisfying about using the old fashioned typewriters which you just DON'T get on the computerized ones. Plus? It's a heck of a workout too! You'll definitely feel it in your whole body until you've gotten several hundred pages done. Then? You'll be in prime condition! So? Go check out your parents or grandparents closets, hit the thrift shops and sales and rescue a DORMANT, forgotten machine. Take it out and try it out. If it indeed needs a tune up.or a new ribbon? Many repair shops still repair and recondition for sale typewriters of all sorts. In fact those "STEAM PUNKERS" I mentioned earlier are a force pushing the demand for these machines forward and keeping them alive and functioning long after they were "retired" from service. In a blackout? Your computer WILL eventually die. Sooner or later its battery will run down to ZERO! Starved of the free flowing electrons it MUST have as its "fuel". Then what? See. The mechanical machines win out again! I must confess that I'm a "60's kid and a self taught, two fingered "hunt'n peck" typist. This was BEFORE the whole "PC" and "MAC" revolution. However, for the price of a decent "laptop" today, in 1988 I bought a brilliant "PANASONIC" hybrid machine. It had the feel of a typewriter when you hit "PRINT" because that's the mechanism it used versus the "dot matrix". However, with a computer-like screen and ability to edit, save, recall and rewrite to and from a 3.5 inch "floppy disk", I used it for all my work. My wife, a NYC schoolteacher who at first wept that I spent our savings on the thing, ended up using it MORE than I did.In fact, It helped her earn two of her four MASTERS Degrees!' Not too bad for a so-called "compromise" machine, eh? A true workhorse! A veritable CLYDESDALE in a room full of miniature ponies! But? In the end? Our trusty PANASONIC compromise finally failed. So? It was BACK to the old, non-electrified, reliable, MANUAL TYPEWRITERS yet again. Have ribbon, will travel and type, type, type, on! The End This has been a "BOJO" essay. Didn't much like the Ten Fourty that we had years ago. Just felt it was cheesy and rattly and not fun to type on. I avoid them. /:

Make sure the tip of the spool shaft is straight up; the tip folds over to secure the ribbon on the shaft.
