I have this typewriter. It belonged to my mother, may she rest in peace. It has Spanish characters, she probably bought it in Juarez, Mexico. She was taking typing classes to be a secretary but my grandfather forced her to quit because “why does a woman need a career”. I am glad I have it and it reminds me of her. And I use it to write.

Great re-find! I recently "rediscovered" a '63 Remington Monarch, which I understand is the predecessor. I "accidentally" bought it a while ago as it was listed at a bargain price and then completely forgot about it. The build quality with cast alloy frame and body is amazing. I gave it a good degrease and clean and I'm very surprised at how well it types and the features. The keys are very similar and feel great to the touch. I love "rediscovering" older machines. It seems that these are very underrated machines.

What would be useful in the typoshpere is a review system using something similar to a Consumer Reports with a points system. Typing, controls, fit/finish, serviceability, case, style with it heavily weighted to typing. You’re the perfect candidate because your experience/opinions are not necessarily driven by selling and naturally weighted to actual use.

Interesting machine Joe. I also liked the 'floating typewriter' look at the beginning and end of the video with the drop shadow. fancy!

Very interesting. I just picked one of these up,, a 1971 in blue, with the case. The lady had a 1979 Erika 105 as well. She wanted $35 for each machine. I wanted the Ten Forty case for a newly acquired 1956 Topedo, but the carriage pin the 10-40 is loose. However, the Erika works well, but no case. Because the 10-40 has a wonky carriage, I ended top getting both machines for $40. I love your videos. Thank you.

if you like that one you should check out the Remington Streamline

Dude... your focal distance lenz... I was about to cry thinking I grew old and lost my sight, not being able to distinguish those letter punches. Please warn us that you're not using 35mm next time! 😂

Joe, nice video. I have one of these from 1971. The carriage has come off and I have to replace the 4mm bearings that fell out. Do you know where the draw band attachment point is on the right-hand side of the carriage?
The Remington Mark II is the one I hear is really a Torpedo.

I'm sorry he didn't take on to the typewriter, although I saw you said he had to downsize, I was thinking if I had to downsize, it wouldn't be from my typewriter collection. Breaks my heart when I'm looking at Typewriters on eBay and cone across a sale where its a lot sale and there like 20 typewriters all in good shape and taken care of, because you know that came from someone who passed, and then the family or whoever got these just decided to sell them. Sure maybe they need to money, but you can tell that might not be the case when they aren't priced correctly as in too low, which I suppose is a way for the Typewriter gods to say here you should save this one and put it in your collection...I guess I look at it like they passed and passed them on to someone they thought would like them and keep the collection together after all that a part of who their owner was, but then turn around and get rid of them for a quick buck...Which is why each of my Typewriters has a single page that's an info sheet that is typed using that typewriter. What is it Where, and When I got it What I paid What's it's value is currently. Then I leave space for what the machine had written or helped on. I write a lot everyday on about 6 different projects, which is by the way, how I figured out how to deal with my problem of not getting overwhelmed with too much to work on, either one project at a time or at least 6 at a time. As I work on one or the other, they all will eventually be done and at 10 pages a day that won't take too long. I do like your idea on a make-shift paper fingers, I wonder if I can do that for my Royal Aristocrat Special... I'll drag it out later today and give that try. One of the bummers to that machine is no paper holders and it can get to be a problem typing along in a good rhythm, mind set, vision typing as I like to call it, and then you get snapped out as chaos and destruction all around as the page is hung up on or knocking things over lol. I'm still loving my EP-43 and I'm sure you know and understand why, I sometimes get to work using the EP-20 but like I said with a dark print and the ability to keep typing during the carriage return is just too nice to not always return to when if like me, you are stuck in bed for a week, is noce to keep working. Right now and when able to get to the table, I have been favoring my Smith Corona Galaxie Deluxe. Just a wonderful workhorse of a machine, easy on the hands and you can type along pretty fast on it. I need to finish cleaning and lubing the Smith Corona 110 Electra, maybe Monday depending on how I'm doing. You have a Galaxie still right Joe? I was wondering if you should do a revisit on it would be interesting as I'd like to know the the Deluxe does for it? Maybe it's like the Deluxe for the Hermes wherein it's just a fancier bag. Oh, I almost forgot, so last week my daughter had softball assignments and my Wife and I went and I brought my mistress lol The EP-43 and it was really an enjoyable experience as I have never written outside before not like that. And some adults and kids came up and saw the machine and asked about it, what is it and one guy said where can I get one Best Buy? He thought it was something new, which just goes to say about styling and design how ahead of their time beother was. Kids of course hadnt even seen a typewriter to relate to it so they were BLOWN AWAY so its a computer with a built in printer, one child awed about in regard. I said kind of, it really a electric typewriter... what's a typewriter? I wanted to cry and laugh but laughing at the insanity of this world and at his lack of knowledge as I don't do that. I try to teach my youngest daughter we don't make fun of people who don't know things, which is what happened to me as a kid and it stops kids from asking questions and learning in fear of being made fun of... Anyway, but it was a really cool experience. I did find it odd that the lid, on the inside, for the EP-20 has room and a place to hold 3 or 5 sheets of paper for on the go, but the 43 doesn't. Ive also been looking at 70's and 80's American Tourist and Samsonite (same company really) briefcases for travel with my EPs something to match their style and protect them. And yes the adapter for the EP-43 also works on the EP-20. Now, I just wish I knew how to turn on or why the Page End alert doesn't work on my EP-43? Anything in the manual you have for it read about turning it on or off? I thought maybe if I plue it in it will work but nope. Also is it safe to plug these machines in while they have batteries in as well? When I plug them in and run on the adapter power supply, I remove the batteries. But if you could look in your manual for the EP-43 about the end of page alert and if there is a on and off code or something, that would be great. Maybe they had different models and this one I have didn't have that option... it's fine, I just put a mark in the far left margin to warn me the end is near lol. Thanks Joe, Enjoy the weekend and Happy St. Patrick's Day ☘️🍀🍺🍻🍖🥕🥬🥔🇮🇪🎶🎉

Okay, I have two EP43s. One is serial number beginning with b611 and it does the end of line warning, the other is serial number beginning with f642 and it doesn’t do it! They work the same otherwise, so I can only assume it was a firmware change where they eliminated that feature. I also don’t see a paper sensor in either machine, so I’m assuming they were counting stepper motor counts on the paper feed servo.

As for using batteries with it plugged in, it’s safe to do so. There’s a switch in the power jack that disconnects the battery circuit when you plug in the adapter. The Canon Typestar 4 is the one where you need to remember not to have alkaline batteries in the machine when on external power because it can recharge the optional NiCad pack is used.

@@Joe_VanCleave Thank you good to know, I remember you said that just wasn't sure which one, and some 80's tech didn't like you having both going. I'm seriously thinking about picking up the brother EP-22, just to have in the collection. I am finding the price on eBay and Etsy for these machines especially the 43 have gone up. Saw a EP-20 GOING FOR $249.99!! Glad I got mine for 9 bucks. Yeah that 43 is an absolute beast or a writing machine. Totally distraction free, and saves on paper memory, and not worrying about Ribbon is truly a surreal experience, fun too. The keyboard of the 43 reminds me of the old IBM Think Pad laptop, has the same feeling and key stroke travel. I keep them both upstairs and like I said just love being able to continue working when stuck in bed. My other machines are jealous 😂 Cheers friend!

They are moving to a new location and he has to downsize. Also, I don’t think was as interested in typing. But there’s always the future!
