A funny thing about Typhon though, in comparison to the gods that is, is that he seemed to be completely faithful in his marriage to Echidna. But then again who would try to hit that... Probably Zeus.

"Hit me harder uncle" Zeus roared in glee. Typhon licked his lips seductively. Hermes watched on from a distance alongside Athena in confusion and disgust as Typhon's dragon and snake heads curled around Zeus's body tightly. "Let's just tell the mortals they fought, even the other gods can't look at Zeus the same anymore." And so, 10,000 years of fucking went down in infamy as an epic mythology battle, where the gods ran in fear of Typhon's "might", and Zeus was the one who stood him down and faced his greatest enemy yet.

I find odd for Typhon to be so underrepresented in fiction, I mean, he is the perfect antagonist for every movie set in greek mythology, not poor Hades. He's also intelligent enough to be a serious threat.

@@Passions5555 Exactly!! Why does he have to be presented as that. Modern interpretations should ACTUALLY READ mythology and take into account CANON sources, not make up shit like Hades is evil. He isn't! He merely rules a realm and is just doing his job. He isn't even ruthless, sadistic, or cold-blooded. Modern interpretations see him similar to Lucifer, or Satan.

Keep Note that in orignally Ragnarök didn't have a rebirth because it's The End and it will STAY The End. Also because the idea of rebirth is more of a christian concept which is why there's rebirth story that came from later on because of Christianity. Side Note: The Christians used the Ragnarök advantage of that adding there was a rebirth and that's why you're here and why there's a suspicous note of All-Mighty being added in the end, all of the sudden. Also more conversions I suppose and elevating the Norse (sorta though not really) equivilant of "The Devil" which is the Jotun who brought Chaos and Famine and blah blah blah.

I would argue that Typhon’s lack of popularity was because he was only in one myth but many monsters also appeared once and are still more popular (like the Gorgons and the Hydra). You could also argue that his defeat was pretty anticlimactic, in some of them he takes Zeus’ tendons but he’s almost always defeated when Zeus chucks his lightning bolts. It’s just strength being defeated by even more strength.

Typhon reing was short. After he ripper Zeus tendons, he trow him into a cave, and decided to go after the other gods, but they all assumed form of animals in Egypt in order to flee from him, and thus Hermes and Pan (and sometimes Apollo or some other god) were able to evade a she dragon called Delphyna (probably another name of Echidna), recover Zeus and heal him. In Dionysiaca, Typhon has a whole speech before battling Zeus, and he states that he will release Atlas and make Zeus hold the sky. And them would release the other titans. So he is redemable in this aspect, if you regard the titans as the victmins. But in the same speech he stated other horrible things. Look up Nonnus Dionysiaca chapter 2, is in there.
@sonofcronos7831
@sonofcronos7831 Жыл бұрын
@@amortality999 in a speech given by Typhon in Dionysiaca chapter 2, Typhon states that he will release the Titans including "canibal Cronus", to built for him a eighty Heaven, a bigger sky than the one that exists now. So is not likely that Cronus could take the kingdom from him. Also, the cyclops and hecatoncheires that Cronus opressed became the biggest foes for him, he would not commit the same mistake again to imprison a monstrous brother.

Athena was a Goddess born from Zeus alone, so in essence it could be argued that Zeus needed his whole self to defeat Typhon. I would argue that Athena was born from Zeus, due completely out of necessity. He had so much potential he was able to spare enough of it in order to create a loyal daughter. Athena has often acted as a shield maiden to her King.

I'm going to work on a book where Typhon breaks free from his prison and even frees the Titans starting another war, it's basically how I think the final battle in Greek Mythology might be, like how Ragnarok was the final battle in Norse Mythology, where the gods and their descendants fight their greatest enemies that have joined together to overthrow Zeus and the gods of Olympus. The Olympians barely win and defeat their enemies once and for all but the state of the world is worse then what happened when it was just the Olympians battling the Titans and Typhon separately so they have a lot of work to do to repair the world but during the second war between them someone finds Pandora's box and opens it freeing hope

Thank you for this examination of Typhon. My interest in Greek mythology goes back decades, yet I only learned of Typhon last year : I never called myself a scholar. I never much cared for Zeus, but your video reinforces what I don't want to acknowledge: Zeus earned his throne. I get the sense that he tricked his older brothers, but he didn't retain his rule through trickery. To think of Zeus alone remaining to battle Typhon is majestic. It reminds me that when times are critical, Zeus steps up. So, I have to quell my naysaying attitude toward Zeus, capricious as he is.

He didn't trick his brothers, though? He was the one who slew Kampe and freed the hekatoncheires who turned the tide of the war. He was the one who defeated Kronos. He won his throne fair and square.

Listening to your explanation, he and, to a lesser extent, Gaia, seem to be quite similar to Tiamat from Sumerian/Babylonian/Akkadian mythology. - All three came to oppose the gods after they had defeated a great foe and had established their rule over the world. (For the Sumerian gods it was after Enki had cast a spell on Abzu and slain him in his sleep). - Both Typhon and Tiamat were the creators of many monsters/great creatures (Tiamat created dreadful serpents and other creatures; the most notable and powerful being Kingu). - Both Typhon and Gaia made the gods tremble in fear, with most of them being too scared to so much as face them. - Both Typhon and Tiamat were slain primarily by one extremely alpha, powerful god. (For the Sumerian version, it was Enlil; for the Babylonian version, it was Marduk). - Tiamat declared war on the Sumerian gods for killing her boi, Abzu; just as Gaia declared war on the Olympian Gods for defeating the Titans. - I believe Tiamat was killed (or harmed) by a lightning bolt, just as Typhon was. All-in-all, I found the story of Typhon to be quite similar to the Sumerian epic of creation, Enuma Elish, and so I decided to highlight some similarities I detected between the primary antagonists. I may have gotten some facts wrong in this comment, so feel free to call me out on anything you see that is incorrect.

Awesome video, I enjoyed how you tied typhoons story ties in with his female counterpart, echidna, there is little left that can be said for echidna, other than she was an ageless, deathless, half snake/ half female nymph, the gods all found her terrible and thus condemned her to guard the innards of the earth, where she eventually found Typhon, imprissioned under mt Etna, can you do a vid about nyx, primordial goddess of the night? She’s a favourite of mine. Would also be amazing if you could do a video about the 12 Olympian gods’ various retinues. Eg- Aphrodite had the erotes, the graces, various minor deities in her retinue. As well as another about opposites, rather than Roman counterparts, Aphrodite was goddess of love, so who was the deity of hate? Hermes was god of speed, perhaps the lazy nymph that was transformed in to the first tortoise, became the goddess of turtles and slowness? Would be so compelling yet complicated. Really enjoying the vids, very well done
