Those wondering why bgc doesn't get flooded, it is because bgc was designed to withstand severe flooding. Bgc has a multi-level catch basin that sits beneath what is currently the Burgos Circle. The structure, which is called a detention tank, is composed of five stories that collect water during heavy rainfall or typhoons with a total capacity equivalent to 8 Olympic-sized swimming pools. When the rain stops or if it’s already safe to discharge the collected water, pumps are activated for the water to reach the Balasimpan Creek then towards the Pasig River, emptying the tank.

BGC has an elevation of 16 meters above sea level, that and a modern sewage system keeps it free from flooding. Many areas in metro Manila are just a few meters above sea level (and sinking due to the weight of buildings and the loss of aquifers or underground water table), in soma places they are even below sea level and of course old and inadequate drainage system, compounded with garbage problem makes it prone flooding.

Visit Marikina and the poorer parts of old Manila - easily flooded. The infra there in BGC, Makati, or Ortigas are much better but we need the world to see how the other parts or distressed areas of Manila are doing!
@inisipisTV4 ай бұрын
It also floods in Tokyo. I’ve been there. The problem with Manila and Marikina is its very low elevation in comparison to the sea. Even with good sewage system, the water tide would just go back up. Old Manila having old and antiquated sewage system like Paris doesn’t help. The solution is to remove all the houses and buildings along Pasig river, give each side 5 meter clearance, then build large dikes on each side. Then build a large water gates along Manila bay. Dredging Pasig river only helps for boat and barges to navigate, never meant to prevent flooding, since the sea level is always constant. During the time of Senior Marcos. He planned to have the entire Marikina to be a large Water Reservoir, since it’s lower than the Marikina river and studies done in the States concluded that the Area would be more flood prone and level of the Marikina river would go higher, as we see it came true, even with the high river embankments built. Unfortunately due opposition from LGU, people power, Informal settlers, all long term Government planning was thrown out the window.
@TheTimelapseTraveler4 ай бұрын
I wish that people in those places would demand the local governments to do something about the infrastructure which isn't able to handle even moderate rain without giant puddles and floods. What BGC has built into it is nothing short of a miracle infrastructure when it comes to dealing with heavy typhoons, but it doesn't mean that other municipalities should just throw their hands up and stay so vulnerable to complete devastation.
@MrQwertypoiuyty4 ай бұрын
@@TheTimelapseTraveler Agree. I heard just now that DPWH "might" implement a similar catchment system to the other areas of Metro Manila. But where will the money come from then? BGC, Makati, Mandaluyong, Ortigas, the exclusive subdivisions like Forbes Park can afford it because, simply, the local governments and big developers there CAN afford it. But building those expensive infrastructure in the poorer areas of Metro Manila will be challenging as it won't be a priority in my opinion. I am heartbroken but will we just let poor people suffer or die and those who are rich living in BGC enjoy their safe abode? It's like medieval England or France, really: peasants are just to be discarded while those aristocrats need to be protected and can live in safe palaces like Versailles. I am just perplexed.

It's sad that places like BGC is not getting flooded because it was designed/constructed properly but the problem, all those excess rainwater from their drainage system goes to adjoining areas that are poor but that's life in the Philippines, you're lucky if rich/have money to afford the luxury of living in this places.
@TheTimelapseTraveler4 ай бұрын
You're totally right about that. BGC was constructed on a hill and the poor areas, like the nearby Pembo for example is down low by comparison. Also, there are giant water reservoir to collect the water which is buried underneath the Burgos Circle. This gets emptied in a way which does not affect the low lying areas. Thanks to this design, BGC is not prone to flooding like so many places around Metro Manila. The living costs are so much higher as a result. It's a real shame though that other places don't have even a half decent drainage built into the infrastructure.
@henrymnl4 ай бұрын
wrong, they have lots of trees and Burgos Circle that can hold rain water and release them when needed...poor areas are flooded because of their garbage and they catch the water from high places. Get your facts right.
