Typical 70's Early 80's BSR Changer Repairs.

I had one just like this one, the 45rpm adapter was a single play adapter when you remove the spindle and the piece sits inside the hole where spindle was not snap in. There was also a spot on top of the adapter that made for a single play 33 or 78. These late 80s BSR changers were trying to be more modern to operate like the newer smaller spindle record players maintaining the original integrity of BSR.

A know an old stereo salesman who worked in the 70s that told me they used to tell customers who were looking at the all-in-one stereos that they "featured exclusive turntables made by the illustrious British Sound Reproducer" company. Makes is sound a lot better than it is----kind of like a shady used car salesman would do LOL.

Hi I'm Tom. For the Idler Wheel, I use a Spring that's inside of an old ballpoint ink pen and take needlenose pliers or tweezers to make loop ends. Oh and use wheel bearing oil that makes the turntable turn like it's on ice. Keep in mind... Don't use WD40, because over a short time they make gears baked-on, stick & run slow. Use recommended lubes & grease for those kinds of movable electronics.

Hi again- This is like "Zen and the Art of Vintage Audio Maintenance". You have immensely enviable patience. BTW, those plastic 45 adapters never did work well so not to worry. A lot of later vinyl work was really sloppy as well. The finest were the mono items from the 50's. I could elaborate on the engineering but then you would fall asleep. I have thousands of these things and I think they just procreate when I'm not looking. Great site! g~

Indeed, it has often happened that someone has tried to force the turntable to turn with their hand while it is fused up with the old grease. It is sometimes so tight that the spindle shaft will turn along with the turntable. The spindle shaft must then be re-aligned properly(with the nose pointing toward the front left corner) in order for the cycle mechanism to operate the dropping tongue correctly.

also you are correct sir polystyrene records are thicker also the cam in the adapter could be worn out . i'm an old retired repair man repairing these gave me nightmares also if you ever run across a glen burn its a b s r its there lower end changer. be well have fun best of luck .

LOL, your Epic 45 has a strobe on the label. (if a bit off center). I have dealt with various BSR turntables since my teenage years and I'm 61! I have experienced first hand most of what you encountered in the video. They almost always can be made to function properly with some effort. The flat 45 adaptor needs to not be too sloppy on the spindle, which in turn needs full travel of the pusher for all to function. Make sure it is pointed exactly in the direction it needs to go.

I have a slight different one to this model. I had the same problem with mine. But I found out about what caused that freeze-up problem with the turntable... The automatic chrome spindle was turned at a wrong direction. The side part inside the top that angles down out as it goes up and down to keep the stack of records up float at stationary level - needed to face the front left corner because the gears got jam'd up and nothing would work normal. Plus it needed re-lubricated. I hope this helped. :)

Nice vidio, i also have several BSR record changers. I have had good luck with removing the old dryed grease from main bearing & the toothed gear for cycling. Last one I cleaned also at first had trouble with the dropping of records after cleaning & greased.....but in looking at some utube vidios I found something out. Some BSR's that the platter is so seized up that when forced to rotate the spindle & its mount by bearings will rotate out of position. Mine did the same thing but with info from this vidio,... the key in the mount for the spindle should be pointed to the pivot point of the arm;....and when spindle is inserted the "shelf" will point to this same pivot point for proper engagement of record drop mechanism. Yup. If they drop two records, gently uplift of the end of the balance arm with something, and a little bit of hair-dryer heat will reform it so only one record clears the separator.

Great and detailed site. Quickies questions are: First- what kind of oil(s) do you use for the parts? Oil is just not plain oil. Many plastic and rubber parts degrade quickly with the wrong ones. What is your choice? What do you think of lithium, silicone and graphite non petrol based lubes? Second- What solvent is least problematic to remove the old, hardened lube in these BSRs? Third: What do you use to view your recommended "best strobe" speed discs? Is there any adjustment for a very high or low rpm? I can't remember the lamp types they used on the higher end tables. I have other questions about a common but 50's vintage RCA 45 player. It's really adorable and cool but has some plastic cam problems and won't cycle. Again, just excellent work. Thank you! g~

Rubber parts shouldn't have oil. Lithium would work in most cases. Silicone too thin, ditto graphite.

Hi! Love the videos and hope you reply 🙏, given this is almost a 10 year old video! I am 51 years old. When I was a kid we had one of those integrated stereo systems that had am/fm recievers, turntable, cassette and 8track players. My parents have passed and no one recalls what make or model it was. I have been looking for a very long time and finally saw the model of turntable in your video! You said it was an electrophonic. Our cabinet was way different but thats definitely the right turntable with the silver platter and round black accents. Could you confirm this as a bsr table and if so what model it is? It might help me narrow down what make and model our intigrated system was. I know it was a late 70s or very early 80s. We must have gotten it circa 1980. The face of the front was all silver. I presume some aluminum plates covering a plastic cabinet with faux wood sides and record strage space below as well as 8track/cassette storage by the turntable on top. I recall it having green and red led light vu meters located near the radio dial. My dad had Pioneer floor seakers hook up to it, but I've never found a Pioneer system like it thus I think the speakers were added afterwards and not the same make as the system itself. It was such a great system and I have a lot of fond memories of it. Oddly, no one knows what happened to it. Thanks for any help you might give!

I'm guessing the tonearm pivot underneath still has some dried up stiff grease that's froze up. See if you can locate the model number of the changer off the tag, if it's not unglued from the bottom, & get the service info. for reference.

The reason the turntable will just raise and lower its pickup to the rest position is because there's no record waiting to be played. BSR had designed some turntables so that the spindle senses weight on it which tells the player a record(LP or 45 single) is awaiting play. If there's no weight on the spindle, the pickup arm will not move across the play a record which isn't there.

IMPORTANT: Guy missed a most overlooked frozen part. The cam follower bearing. Take main cam gear off and make sure the follower bearing spins, otherwise it'll develop a flat spot and you'll have erratic operation, like setdown issue he has at the end of the video.

The tone arm on mine doesn't want to move when it's told to play AUTO - if I take the arm by hand and manage to trigger a "next disc" it will move, so the mechanism *CAN* function, but just doesn't get triggered.. Instead, it picks up the arm, moves left and right tiny amounts, then drops it again and turns off. Trying to figure that out currently..

when the cam gear is functioning under the turntable platter it goes counter clockwise not clock wise .and the plastic star piece on the tonearm assembley mechanism is the issue the spindle is not in correctly and the top of the grooves of the center of the spindle should be in between 7 and 8 o clock and that is the correct position .

There should be absolutely no oil between the trip actuator (pawl) plates. Just a tiny dot of fine machine oil on the pivot is all that is needed, or the tonearm will stick at the end of the record.

Im working on a 25cx model and have it what seems to be good to go now however one of the wires on the cartridge (yellow) ground I beleive that screws into tone arm with came unsoldered. Its super tiny and Im afraid of making it worse. DOes this tonearm come off or do you have any tips on how to resolder it?

I have found that these BSR's from the '70s and '80s run fast. Adjusting the idler wheel does not really help much. To get it to an accurate speed, you have to file down the shaft in the motor with emery cloth. It is time consuming, because you have to keep checking it with a strobe light, which means putting the platter back on each time. And you have to be careful not to file too much off, or it will run slow.

I am told it is the build-up of the rubber, & dirt on the shaft, & after removing those deposits, it will run at correct speed. Not sure of that, but will check it against a NOS changer I have in a box. Others have said 2% fast too. No idea why, other than that shaft is so small, the slightest buildup causes the speed to go fast.

I use acetone to clean off the rubber build-up on the motor shaft. After that, then I adjust the idler wheel height directly left of the wheel (there is a screw which you will need a flat blade screwdriver to adjust)

I have had the same trouble , I got it all re greased ect. The changer was dropping them properly , then it started dropping the first record fine the other stack would be left drooping to one side! I dont know how to fix this. I bought a singles spindle to replace it , which defeats the purpose of having a multi player. I bought a new stylus for it. The deck looks fine though apart from not being able to stack them! I have bought a pre amp for it to connect it to a modern hi fi.

Be certain the record shelf on the spindle is facing toward the rear of the tonearm. The keyway for the spindle also faces rear of the tonearm. Sometimes they are spun out of position.

Just found a 3-speed BSR (Soundesign attach-on unit). Covered in dirt, tobacco tar, etc. Had a seized platter, but I used the soldering iron trick to free it & the spindle. Re-lubed those & the cycling gear w/ white lithium grease. On a test, the auto functions seem to work as long as the hold-arm is down. If I leave it above the tonearm, it does the endless repeat. But the biggest downer is that there's no stylus. How would I determine which one I need?

+Farmradio It's a Soundesign model 424 & has a BSR w/ the really slim-type headshell. The cartridge doesn't appear to be easily removable. That is, I can undo the clip at the front, but it appears to be held in by the rear pin/rivet that secures the stylus hold-in clip. Also, there's no plug, just individual leads connected to each pin.

The behavior you describe is normal function. On BSR changers, the stabilizer arm has three positions - 'Load', 'Play', and 'Stop'. Load is the position with the arm raised and swung away from the spindle (the position you use to stack records on the spindle). Play is the position near the spindle on top of the stack of records, and 'Stop' is when the arm drops to its lowermost position after the last record drops. This last position is detected when the changer cycles and sets the auto-shutoff sequence. So, if the arm is left in the 'load' position, the changer will repeat the last record indefinitely. If the changer has no records on the upper portion of the spindle, and the stabilizer arm is in the lower (shutoff) position, starting the changer will result in the changer immediately shutting off again without attempting to play a record. This, too, is normal, and is in fact a feature intended to protect the stylus. To play a record manually, place the record directly on the platter. Leave the stabilizer arm in the 'load' position and start the changer. After the the record starts to play, carefully swing the stabilizer arm toward the spindle and lower it gently to the 'stop' position at the bottom of its travel. When the record finishes playing, the changer will automatically return the tone arm to its rest and shut itself off.

He bought a record changer from GoodWill and the needle would only set down in the middle of the record regardless of the setting (7,10,12). We cleaned it following your instructions and it now sets down perfectly. +Mom Maine The trip lever is getting too close causing it to get tripped too early, not sure of a cause off hand. The trip is on the big cam wheel under the platter, a pusher arm starts ever so slightly to come in contact with it, then pushes it quick & fast at the records lead-out groove.

I have one of the BSR units I am trying to restore. I got most of it working and your video helped lots. I have one issue the idler that turns the platter makes noise. I looked at it and it has a spot where it was stuck and the motor was turning and wore a spot on it. Do I need to find a replacement or can it be fixed some other way?

Look closely at the big black round elbow pivot spring washer. It's the source of the bind. gently apply some heat to soften up the old grease, then lubricate it. Don't force anything, or the lever will break. Don't used the lever until it's freed up.

I have a vintage sears am/fm combo stereo with a BSR. Something fell on my tone arm and now the needle skids across all my records. I've used the "penny" technique but I'm afraid pennies and nickels and quarters were either too heavy or not heavy enough. Any suggestions as to what I should do? +Ryan Dunn Yes, do not force the lever. It's the scissor type levers underneath. The old grease is hard as a rock, clean, & relube pivot points. I use the lube jell with PTFE. Super Lube is it's name. Radio shack had it, saw at Harbor freight also, or automotive store.

Not sure if this is covered in the video, can't watch the whole thing right now. Anyway, I have a bsr turntable that is almost in perfect working order. Only thing wrong with it is that in auto mode, the tonearm will lower onto the record and skate across the lead-in groove and thru the first several seconds of the first song and then play normally. What, if anything, can be done to remedy this?

The pressure when it drops can be the cause of that - on my BSR it's the knob on the tone arm facing you when everything's put together and you're using it normally (left for lighter drop, right for heavier), depends on the model, though. Unfortunately if it's all the way to the right there isn't a stock way to fix it that I know of, just have to add weight somehow or another.

Auto binding is the hard grease under the cycle cam. The big toothed gear under the platter. It must be taken off, cleaned & greased. Same with the speed select, binding pivot points. The grease & oil has all turned to a sticky paste.

It could be that your idler wheel is hard and stiff. This is what causes slipping, when the platter doesn't turn properly. To remedy this, re-surface the outer edge of the idler wheel with sandpaper or an emery board. Remove the idler wheel off the shaft by popping off the mini c-clip and washers holding it. Clean the shaft with alcohol. Then apply Rawn rubber cleaner/rejuvenator to the idler wheel using a qtip. Allow 15 minutes for the rejuvenator solution to soak and penetrate the idler wheel. Once done, wipe off excess cleaner, re-install the idler wheel and c-clip, and clean stepped motor and inner rim of platter. your platter should turn properly, now that the rubber on the wheel is soft and flexible.

It's a type SP20. It's the adapter used for standard BSR record changers that are either standalone or part of a 3 or 4-in-1 console system. Type SP21 is the one you use for mini-changers.

+XShadowScalesX The trip lever is located on the large cam under the platter (at the gap in the gear teeth). it must move freely to trip the cycle at the lead out groove.

There is. You have to turn the cycle cam gear a little to the right. The trip lever on the cycle cam gear is supposed to extend near your platter's thrust bearings. If not, then the platter gear will not engage the cycle cam gear properly.

These have no speed adjustment, only to be sure there is no rubber build-up on the motor shaft itself, which causes these to go faster. That said, these still usually run about 2% fast. Have one brand new in the box, & have not confirmed how fast they ran new as of yet.

+Kyle Stacy Crud on the inner rim of the inner platter (the part that touches the idler wheel) will speed it up, so will crud on the motor shaft. With belt-drive turn tables, the effects of crud build up cancel each other out, but with idle-drive, they are additive.

Lord if you want to revive a idler drive turntable find a Dual or a Garrard . At least the reward would be worth the effort. With a BSR I would simply buy a after market motor and drive the outside of the platter with a belt.

Have Dual & Garrards. Both are nice, but they also come with their share of headaches, & parts availability is poor. There are Millions of these BSR's around for folks just starting out.

The narrow ceramic type pickups used here were manufactured by Tetrad. The right channel on these can go weak vs. the left on some with age, also the rubber yoke/saddle can suffer from age related fatigue, hardness, etc.

Skillbiscutt Not yet. I know, eBay sellers are crazy on some asking prices. Needs adjustment, don't have record to try, needs needle, etc. Expect top prices for something that you will have to spend a lot of time on.

I have a question about a broken auto spindle that my BSR (realistic clarinette 92) record player currently has. The records won't drop, and the bottom of the spindle appears broken. The middle piece that moves (the same piece as the lip that retracts) is snapped off. I watched this video hoping to see if I could catch a glimpse of how the mechanism under the spindle that drops the disk works, but I can't really see it. My question is if I buy a new BSR auto spindle, will the changer work? Does the spindle set into something or attach to the lever that moves in any way? I looked at the pictures, then pulled a spindle out of one here, & that one is definitely broken off. I would replace the spindle & see what happens. Probably a jam of the stack or too many placed on it, caused it to snap off at one time. That lever is what pushes a record off the shelf from a stack, & makes it drop. It holds six.

Farmradio Thank you. Does the lip stay out on the top due to gravity pulling on weight of the piece on the bottom? Or does something pull on the bottom to keep the lip out?

Yes, your new spindle should work. If you can find the make and model of your BSR record changer (there is a red sticker underneath the unit which tells the model number.) Before inserting the new spindle, though, you should clean off and remove the old grease in the spindle hole. And the spindle bottom is attached into the changing mechanism lever. The shelf on the multiplay spindle must face the upper-right corner of the turntable, at the overarm and tonearm, in order to drop the records properly.

That's a very broad remark and based solely on the stuff the made from the mid 1970s on. Their earlier models were typically very well built, and BSRs (even the cheap ones) are notably reliable. Most of the people who pour derision them are the so-called 'audiophiles', whose opinions I generally tend to ignore as biased and often self-validating. I have had, and still have, a number of BSRs that run like the proverbial watch. They do the job and they do it quite well, even 30-50 years after they were built.

Wow! People are posting about what a "great" & "informative" video this is??? Really? C'mon! This is to be THE most poorly edited repair video I've ever seen on KZbin. And yes, I've seen quite a few. And there are better, VASTLY better videos about dismantling & repairing the EXACT SAME BSR chassis. This is at least the 3rd one I've seen, & the first one I had to try extra hard not to sleep through! The sound "dropout" where I guess Buddy's mic fell off his lapel from 6:50-7:20 is completely unacceptable; just pathetic that it wasn't redone. Some relevant information seemed to be conveyed during that period, & I couldn't make out 💩 in terms of what was being said. It should have been IMMEDIATELY obvious that the video either needed to be stopped the moment the mic fell. But no, Buddy carries on for a fool half minute as if he didn't even notice! Then there's the REPEATED, what was it? 3 or even 4 times over the last 10 FOOL MINUTES that Buddy informs us "...and this is the end of the video"!!! What am watching here? An infommercial?? "But wait! There's MORE!" And for what? So we can watch Buddy prove Einstein's maxim that repeating the same thing over & over again & somehow expecting a different result is THE DEFINITION OF INSANITY??? AND expecting the viewer to be equally fascinated by watching you NOT fixing nor explaining why you're just repeating yourself, over & over again, FOR NOTHING??? Why were we subjected to, for example, watching Buddy scratching his head trying to find the tonearm set-down adjustment screw, THEN making what? At least a HALF-DOZEN attempts to get the screw set just right??? THEN immediately thereafter, we see the rare & arcane proprietary BSR 45rpm Adapter malfunction like, FIVE TIMES? With no attempt to diagnose or repair it, nor even commit to doing a separate video on it, nor even merely suggesting that he MIGHT do such a video in the future? Then there's the atrocious non-showing the viewer of the actual parts being worked on, the non-explanation, either in any required depth or even AT ALL, & an unwillingness to dismantle the turntable to the degree necessary required to both compensate for the inadequacies of the GoPro headcam used here to be able to zoom in, never mind just focus! on the finer parts in the mechanism being discussed and fiddled with... And if Buddy supposedly knows how things work, either in general or specific to BSR, what are we to make of Buddy's comment at 10:30 that even "the springs need to oiled". Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaat? Maybe I misunderstood, & thought that this was a BSR repair video & not merely some Basement Dweller Technician Wannabe's BLOG??? This entire meandering 45 minute torture could have EASILY been edited down to less than 30 minutes, with absolutely no loss of relevant information conveyed to us.😢

Farmradio Yup thats no fun. Anyways, Just picked up a BSR/Realistic changer for $1 at the local flea market. the Sure cartridge is shot but overall the player actually works after a quick lube job. But the speed is inconsistent, Probably time for an idler. Its a newer unit, uses a plastic CAM instead of metal, and has anti-skate.
