Beach Fishing in January today and I had a really annoying missed rattle from what looked like a Plaice
Today me and Nelly head for the Beach to target flatfish that can be had this time of the year.
You can catch Plaice from the Beach in January. They tend to be in less good shape having recently spawned. But the dab always put a smile on my face.

The dab (Limanda limanda) is a flatfish from the family Pleuronectidae. It is native In our North Sea and the Baltic Sea, as well as the Mediterranean and Black seas. The dab is a bottom-dwelling fish that typically lives on sandy or muddy bottoms up to 200 meters. So benefits us Beach anglers
In terms of physical characteristics, the dab has an oval-shaped body that is typically brown or grey in colour, with a white belly. However I did have a green one in Dungeness once - You can take a look at that video here;
• Sea Fishing Dungeness-...
It can grow up to 45 cm in length and weigh up to 1 kilogram with a 20cm minimum size.
The dab has both eyes on the right side of its head as discussed in the video The eyes are located on the upper side of the head, which allows the fish to camouflage itself on the bottom of the ocean floor.
The dab's diet primarily consists of crustaceans and small fish. Its diet can vary depending on the location and the availability of food. They feed mostly on small crustaceans like shrimps, crabs, and worms, but also on small fish, especially juvenile sand eels. They use their sense of smell to locate their food. But I have found the addition of sprats tails or a feather can up the catch rate and I recon they may well be hunting partially by sight. I don’t see much of a difference between fresh and older Lug. That said i’ll continue to monitor this during February too.
The dab is a common target of commercial and recreational fishing. In some areas, it is considered to be a delicacy. The flesh of the dab is white, lean and delicate in flavour. \Its my favourite tasting flatfish The dab is a hermaphrodite, meaning that individuals can change sex from female to male during their lifetime. Dabs typically spawn in the early spring and summer months, laying their eggs in the water column. The eggs are small, transparent and buoyant, and are fertilised externally by the male. The larvae drift with the plankton for several weeks before settling on the bottom.
Overall, the dab is an important species both ecologically and economically and it is considered as a good indicator of the health of the marine ecosystem.
