This old man really enjoyed your video. I’ve lived and fished in the northwest my entire life. I’ve been fortunate to haul in some big sturgeon myself from both the Columbia and the snake. Fish like this girl are very rare and treasured. In 5 decades of fishing this bests my biggest of a 9’8 from the snake in 1993. Congratulations on what could be the sturgeon of a lifetime.

It’s great to get this kind of experience commenting on this fish event. I have never fished the northwest, and figure there might be a few others like myself who appreciate the valued info that catches or teaches of fishing in the Northwest. Mine was primarily southwest Gulf of Mexico and covered the full scope of recreational boating. Power and Sail. When those experienced in the marine world post or comment, it’s usually pretty obvious which ones reveal they are definitely worth listening to.

Columbia River up here in BC has 1200lb sturgeon. We had a dead one pop up on shore. Died of old age. Was about the length of an Orca. No joke. Had to be left to rot as it was too big to move. Columbia River is where it's at for all big fish

I've caught thousands of fish in my life and can count the amount that i have harvested for food on my two hands.. I don't do it for food much, i do it for the sport and to get out in nature to see these beautiful creatures up close. I also use barbless hooks these days to reduce the risk of serious injury.. Almost everyone i know does not keep them and does their damnedest to get them back into the wild alive and well.

@@theshittybowman Based on some studies, this fish could at least be 36 yrs old according to its size meaning a fish could reach this size in that time. Once they reach sexual maturity, growth slows exponentially. So yea, this fish could be 50, 70, 90, or 100 yrs old. I would guess between 40-50.

Well maybe the Rock? But even that muscular monster of of man would have had trouble outlasting that beautiful Sturgeon. Thank God they’re now heavily protected from overfishing. I hear they aren’t very good eating anyway & normally the larger the fish or animal, the tougher their flesh is to eat. Or so I’m told. I’m strictly a meat hunter/fisher, not a trophy hunter /fisher. Shooting an animal is never fair or sporting as they’ve no chance against a 30.06 or whatever rifle. And they didn’t sign the waver to be hunted for sport. Sorry for getting off track folk. Just saying I guess. Love the vid though ya’ll did well, treated & carefully released that Sturgeon respectfully, calming her & letting her relax & regain strength before releasing her. Man, talk about a once-in-a-lifetime experience, on video too! This is the sort of memory that will still spawn fond re-tellings decades down the road handfuls of generations later. Groans of disbelief and annoyed at hearing it for the 1000th time as a family pass around food at their Thanksgiving gathering. I usually prefer the darker colours of clear water fish, but the turbidity of the river really brings out the beautiful pattern of skutes and skin markings on Pacific whites. I'm too old and knackered for this kind of fishing, so living it vicariously through you is a real treat. You may be able to top that with a freshwater stingray from the Mekong, btw. Hint, hint...

Started fishing sturgeon 50 or 60 years ago on the Lower Columbia. We used smelt for bait back then . Of course in those days I smelt Could wai weigh as much as a coho salmon. Like they say big bait big fish. Weld a couple hay hooks together And bend the shank to make a loop. In those days the sturgeon were so big we had to use a logging chain for leader Sometimes we use 18 or 20 pound frozen turkey for bait. Hit a elk on the way to the boat Hit a elk on the way to the boat ramp and we used that for bait We'd run out to about 200' of water in a skiff, drop the bait then run the line back to shore where we had to hook the line up to a small ford tractor. You get 1,000 £1,200 sturgeon on there and you need a tractor to yard em in. My brother woody Hooked into a 25 footer that was Wide as a cow. We lost more than one tractor that way. But now and then we would land 1 without anybody dying But we usually did catch and release for anything over 15 or 18 feet. Once they hit eight or nine hundred pounds you had sort of a kindred spirit with them. Show we would carve our name and the date Back Of their heads and let go. We caught one 2200 pounder that was big as a Winnibego with Mark Twains name on it. Well...those were the days. The last 1 we were able to get on dry land was big enough to feed the entire town of Clatskanie. (Bout 40 mile east of Astoria.)

Caught a 40lb sturgeon once. It was a long while before we got it in. 600lb! Epic catch man. I can imagine the fish was like, "Eh, thanks for the workout mate. Let's not do it again."
