Retired newspaperman here... when I started out in pre-computer days, newsprint sheets were used for note-taking and for typing up stories on our old, well-used manual typewriters. At the end of a press run, what was left on the press was changed out with fresh rolls for the next run even if there was hundreds of yards left on them. These were called end rolls and what wasn't needed in the newsroom was given away -- great drawing paper for kids! If your local paper still prints locally (many have consolidated press operations) you might find a newsprint source there. As strapped as papers are now they'll probably charge a nominal fee (unless you know someone who works there). One caution: Newsprint is far from archival. My clipping file is discolored and well on it's way to dust after just a few decades.

I love when you wax poetic about typing paper! I buy all my paper at estate sales and I have quite a stash of various watermarked and "precious" papers that were labeled typing paper. I do see a huge difference in imprint quality when I use actual typing paper.

Really pleased to view this video! I've been a fan of newsprint typing paper ever since I was in journalism school some 30 odd years ago, when we used a certain size of paper known as a "take". Newsprint paper also scrunches up with a very satisfying feeling in the hands, when you scrunch the paper into a ball for the purpose of throwing into a waste basket. Thank you, Joe! (As it was explained to me at the time, a "take" was used in the hot type days of typesetting when a copy boy would use one of these small sheets of paper to "take" a few lines of type from the machine that created the type to a composing room where it was set in a frame-like object. Reporters would type their stories a sentence or two at a time on these "takes", and hand them to the copy boy, who would then take them to the machine that created the type, and then they'd take the lead type in the "take", to the composing room.)

I would guess this is where the phrase "hot take" comes from no?

I'm glad you mentioned column width A narrow column width is much easier to read online because you don't have to keep scrolling left and right to maintain a readable print size.

Hi Joe, I too like different papers, textures and colours to type on. But I agree with you that whatever helps anyone to write freely and genuinely is the paper to choose. Expensive and precious papers may block this process for some and encourage it in others. The important thing is to type and see what happens. Funnily enough, I just bought myself a news print paper pad, so I'll have to get writing and let you know how it goes... As long as what we write comes from the heart, it doesn't really matter what it lands on. Sometimes we simply over think it. Best wishes 😊

That is a reason I prefer to use only one kind and brand of paper for the typewriter or computer printer, even when I keyboard work for other people.

I ordered the newsprint paper you recommend and am very pleased with it. The imprint is very good, better than standard copy paper indeed.

I also discovered the wonders of writing on my Olivetti typewriter with newsprint separate from this video! What a joy it was to discover that I am, in fact, not crazy, and that other people are getting enjoyment out of pressure free, writing from an inexpensive yet very practical paper

Learning about the various kinds of paper for typewriting in this show is more helpful than I realize. As for me, whether I use a computer [color laser] printer, or a typewriter, I prefer one brand and kind of laser printer paper, even when I print jobs for other people. The manual typewriter had been my starting point when I learned typewriting when I was 12 years old.

Paper is going to be my next step in the writing journey for me. Where it begins is the endless, giant rolls of paper that your videos inspired me to try. I've got an 18 inch roll of easel paper on curtain rods high up on the wall like a wrapping station, and it leads to a large marked cutting mat and paper slicer. Most of the papers I use can be cut from this roll. I've been enjoying cutting my own index/business cards, flash cards, 8.5x11 and 11x17 inch paper, and even situational papers like a 6x9.5 inch stack for an old calendar pad. I wouldn't have tried this if it wasn't for your videos! Thanks for another great one, I'll have to see if there are giant rolls of newsprint anywhere... I would love to cut that paper and use a Selectric with it's many fonts to make a personal newspaper!

Great timing! I just loaded the last of my inkjet paper into my printer and having none for my typewriter. I don't suppose you have had it long enough to have it's acids eating it away? But bah, I have some stuff from college, some 40 years ago, that is still readable. I'm pretty sure it is going to outlast me.

After this video I went to an office supply store. I come home with Xerox recycled paper - nothing special but it looks much better than paper for printers. Thanks for your inspiring thoughts.

I recall this same paper bering used to print school lesson papers in Wisconsin. It was called 35lb groundwood pulp. They ran it on a roll fed Oce digital printer.

I will look for something similar. If I could only find unlined letter-size notepad paper, that would be my go to default typewriter paper. It is so nice. Daniel

I'm starting a one page per day typewritten journal, and I found a ream of Kokuyo A5 blank paper for $18 on Amazon. The paper is thin, but smooth and holds ink well. You can even use it on both sides (that's my plan).

I forget the brand, xerox maybe, but I use a 24lb ivory paper. A little more expensive , but worth it. I love the way the ink looks on it and the feel of it. I was lucky and found my love for typing on ivory paper pretty quickly.

What you drinking Joe? Isn't that the truth, strangers get thr best, friends get the cheap stuff. I've used the same stuff I draft on, to write letters to even inquiry letter for that matter when its not an email, and in truth that same "paper for an email is the same "paper" I edit on lol. I had up to just recently, always bought that cheap white copy paper from Walmart, so I dont mind crunching it up into a ball when frustrated lol, I think its a 92 white 86 lbs paper cheap but soaks in typewriter ink with out smudges. No I say up till now, my Wife found this white printing paper 98lbs soft white reads as Wolf something on it, never seen it before, but it feels amazing to touch and write on...im actually upstairs when I wrote this, I'll add a reply with more information on it herein with a upc code...si that just leaves one question.... What you drinking Joe, what's in the tumbler buddy? At 2pm, NC time, we break out the booze! ❤

@@Joe_VanCleave Mmmmm--Hmmmm, a Russian Tang, lol, j/k..Those are good though.... Hey! You should see the solar eclipse on Monday, April 8th, 2024, I think totality is right through ABQ this time! I saw it back in 2017, I found totality to be kind of unnerving, if I'm honest, all the animals go quiet, where I'm out East, there are all these Bird Sanctuaries, so we have song of birds Morning, Noon, and night, but Solar Eclipse totality shut them all up! Course I was thinking what it will be like after those 8, or so minutes pass after our Star dies, and now you will too...lol, just when I was getting comfortable with it oh this is cool, it was ending and the power company put the lights slowly back on lol. Hope you and the Mrs. Enjoy, be safe and well, Cheers! Hope you get some good pictures if you have some solar filters of course. Will it be tang then my friend? Lol, always cheers!

A practical question: Newsprint paper is thinner than most papers I believe, so for older typewriters like mine that have hard platens, do you use copy paper as backup sheets or something else? Do you use backup sheets for typewriters with even good platens?
@Joe_VanCleave
@Joe_VanCleave Жыл бұрын

Dear Mr van Cleave, I would like to know if there's a method to refresh the ribbon when the color ist weak. What kind of ink should be used?
@rollo.q
@rollo.q Жыл бұрын
I'm sure Mr van Cleave will correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe you can use refill ink for stamp pads. It comes in little bottles at stationary stores. of course this only works for one colour ribbons (at least, it will be one colour when you've finished whether you intended it to be or not)
@badger9961
@badger9961 Жыл бұрын
@@rollo.q Have you tried this? I did. It works for a moment, a day or two, but this kind of ink dries out very fast - like it does, when you use it with a stamp.
@rollo.q
@rollo.q Жыл бұрын
@@badger9961 I have not, I usually replace ribbons but I had it recommended to me and was planning to try it on a machine I'm renovating I appreciate the warning. Sounds like it's not great. Weird because I see a lot of office stamp pads be left open all day in offices here, so i figured it wouldn't dry out enough to be a problem. I've also head of folks using wd40 on the ribbon but I have no idea what sort of results that gives. Guessing replacing the ribbon is out of the question in this scenario?
