I spent probably my whole life trying to get rid of stereotypes about Asian Versus Caucasian appearances. I grew up in a family where both my parents had thick double eyelids. Only my two sisters and my grandma were born with monolids. It bothered me people would come up to us and ask where we were from, if we were mixed or if we had surgery. My parents made it clear that where they are from which is more south east China, a lot of people have double eyelids. I studied humanities in college and i learned anthropologically speaking the fold does not make a person Caucasian. The fold is believed to be a evolutionary adaptation. Monolids are more common in Northern East Asia as the fatty eyelids helps to insulate against harsh winters. Double eyelids are common south because it is more humid and hot. Believe it or not Caucasians can also have monolids. It is mostly seen in more northern regions of Europe. As for myself I have a mix of my grandma's monolid and my parents double eyelids so I have what is called tapered eyelids. I use double eyelid tape on rare occasions, mostly when filming or formal events. I am also a insomniac, when I have restless sleep, my eyelids feel heavy and stretches out into a monolid. There is actually a medical condition called Ptosis which sometimes require eyelid surgery. So I think its wrong to assume everyone who wants double eyelids, do it to look "Caucasian"

"I think she looked better before" good for you, obviously SHE didn't think so. And at the end of the day the only thing that really matters is what you think about yourself. Caucasians also aren't the only race with double eyelids, or straight hair. Tyra also found a way to make it all about her. As usual. "I do this because I want to look more white" sweetheart that is your own damn problem that you need to deal with. Quit bringing others down to feel better about yourself. I don't know if you know but the hair color does not indicate race. There are Asians who naturally have blonde hair. Celebrities choose to have different colors of hair including purple, red, white, blonde and etc. They just choose those colors that match their concept of the song. Also, eyelid surgery does not make Asians look like Caucasians. I don't know where you get those references, but Asians have different bone structures, medial canthal ligaments, muscle, and fats around the eye. It is impossible to make Asian eyes into Caucasian with surgery. So it does not make sense to reason Asians get eyelid surgery to look like Caucasians. Asians simply get eyelid surgery to look 'prettier' because as you know when human face features look like a baby such as big eyes, we are engineered to think those faces are very cute. Also, as this comment says, because of the fat in the eyelid unlike other races, Asian eyes get droopy. So a lot of senior Asians get eyelid surgery to remove fat. These misunderstandings need to be clarified and I hope my comment may correct your prejudice that you might get from the wrong source. Thanks.

Jamba Lyer I never said all Asians have small eyes, WTH? Most Asiatic people do have noticeable eye folds and different eye shapes, but eye folds and shape varies from regions or ethnic groups. I know there are some Asian countries or cultures that have high rates of surgeries to remove eye folds to meet a certain standards of their country, but some of that is attributed to the Eurocentric West. People can counter that, and say that some Whites have issues with their skin color and want to get tans or darken their hair. Some Whites have surgical enhancements because they want bigger booties or breast because they may see that in other ethnic groups or it maybe to just meet the perceptions of the West's standards of beauty. .

As someone who grew up in China, I feel that I have the right to jump in and clarify this:Asians do NOT undergo the double eylid surgery to look more Western. Having double eyelids makes your eyes look bigger, and big eyes are considered to be UNIVERSALLY attractive on women because they are associated with innocence and youthfulness. In middle school, we read a Chinese novel written 400 years ago which describes a beauty having "snow-white skin and almond (big & upward slanted) eyes". This was before China had any Western influence. Of course with globalization, more Asians are starting to accept the Western standards of beauty. The same can be said about the West, with more people going to the tanning salon nowadays. But In the end, everyone is just trying to fit into their own culture's standards of beauty. This has nothing to do with wanting to "change your identity".

The surgery was first developed and performed in Korea by Dr. D. Ralph Millard, an American military plastic surgeon who was stationed in the country during the Korean War (1950-53). Among the very first Koreans who received the particular procedure were Korean war brides who married American soldiers During the war, Korean eyes without the crease ― referred to as the superior palpebral fold in American medical texts ― were dubbed “slanted,” and were seen as a mark of inscrutability and deviance. In her text, Kim argued that it was significant that Millard, who is one of the pioneers of Asian double eyelid surgery, was a military surgeon whose experience of Asian bodies was firmly rooted in Cold War ideologies and discourses.

Its so common for korean women have that eye surgery though, and its because they want their eyes to appear bigger and it's not even high risk like a lot of surguries we do here. A lot of them get it done in their last year of high school, it's like getting their teeth whitened...tyra made a bigger deal out of this than it is

fuck me, 2:45 Tyra is actually getting annoyed that she's not saying clearly that it's race related. Of course it's fucking implied that her eyes looked like that because of her race, but she's freaking antagonizing her about it.

I have absolutely no eyelid crease and I'm proud of it. I'm Korean, and it is part of who I am. I'm not white so why would I want to look white? Sure I wear makeup to make my eyes look bigger, but most women do. As long as you're happy with what you see in the mirror, who cares what others think?

Both my parents (we are chinese) have double eye lids. my brother and I are born w/o. If i wanted to get double eyelid surgery, would it be me attempting to look european or asian? Many eyes have double eyelids as much as they don't. It's not fair to assume that having double eyelids only lead to a european look...

Damn Tyra ........................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................I usually have a lot of like for you but seriously though this episode....How do you know what beauty standards are in the entire world? Wow that was quite ignorant seriously...assuming people want to look 'white'? Jesus...I'm not even sure how to respond to this one..not everybody in the world has these Americanised and that's what they are Americanised perspective of beauty not Western because western countries are very accepting of other looks for the most part, I'm Nigerian and I've lived in an Asian country [thank's dad's job] but I've never wanted to feel 'white' neither do I think Chinese people in the UK are going to want to look 'white'. I just seems like she's trying to do the typical American thing of narrowing everything down to a specific point, and from an outsider perspective that's very irritating. I lost a bit of respect because of this video..

Yes, you want Tyra to shut up because it is painful and transparent when we realize how society defines in a singular way what beauty is, what is mainstream acceptance! KaholFitz: what an absurd response and TELLING response! This girl was obviously bullied by her classmates and suffered self-esteem issues because she lived in a world that excluded her idea of beauty and what is pretty. Tyra did right by helping her to confront her own inferiorty complex. Sorry KaholFitz: Tyra wasn't the bully but the kids AT HER SCHOOL were the BULLIES!! Instead of attacking Tyra, stop for a moment and look at herself in the mirror!!!!

Ok... When you draw your eyelines upward then, is it because you want to be an asian? And if you tann your skin, is it because you want to be an African? In my opinion, people just want to try different things what they don't possess. And Tyra and many africans and south east asians have also double eyelids too.

In Korea apparently it's a normal thing to get plastic surgery, parents give it to kids without a second thought as a graduation present. Just about ALL their celebrities and tv personalities have had it too, it's become common-place. Although Korean-American it's probably not much different in the local community where this lady spends her time now as an adult... that's what Tyra doesn't get.

Tyra should have done more research. According to this korean plastic surgeon, double eyelids tend to give a friendlier appearance. Since the first impression is important in Korean (and I think he said East Asian culture in general) a lot of parents buy eyelid surgery for their kids to improve their job chances (btw I think Monolids are beautiful but he was stating why some people prefer double eyelids). Also at QOVES video on East Asian beauty standards they stated that Japanese women from the 1800s or earlier just prefer the appearance of double eyelids to monolids. It has nothing to do with looking white and she made herself look like a fool.

I'm an Chinese male, flat nose, normal sized eyes with double lids (depending on how well I sleep -.-). People tell me I'm handsome a lot, Caucasians, Asians and Hispanics alike. I worked out it isn't the features which make you beautiful, it is how well they match each other. Features are like clothes. Being good looking is subjective to every person who sees you, it depends on how different you look to them and what they like personally based on their experiences.
@alanpikku11 жыл бұрын
Not all Asians have monolids. Most SE Asians like myself have double eyelids. Does that mean we are born trying to look white? lol
@duxnihilo11 жыл бұрын
I was about to post that. And many Asians do the surgery when they're born with monolid. And monolid can be beautiful.
@SuperGentlelover10 жыл бұрын
True. Not all asians look same. North east asians have mobolid eyes in general ( i said general. There are people with double lid eyes) and tend to have fair skin with small upper nose while south east people in general have doublelid eyes, and olive skin and flat nose ( but there are people with higher nose. Not much) .

I watched this expecting to hear some bullshit come out of Tyra's mouth... but really, I'm fuckin shocked at how many dislikes this has and how much hate Tyra's getting. There's undeniably a "eurocentric" ideal of beauty, and you can hear this straight from the mouths of many Asian's. Of course this doesn't mean every single Asian who seeks the double-eyelid surgery has this in mind (as there are always exceptions to generalizations), but I think it was admirable that Tyra shared her own struggle and experience growing up and I imagine her own battle with physicality has affected her perception (not entirely wrongly so, but it's probably why she over did it)

I see some people commenting about how most 'Asians' have monolids. I definitely do not notice that where I come from, which is Malaysia, and most of the people I mix with are Malaysian-Chinese. Most of us have double eyelids, or maybe hooded double eyelids. Not many at all have monolids. If anything, something very common over here is uneven eyelids, whether it be one double and one mono, or just double lids with uneven creases. I definitely don't think it's 'trying to be white' to want to have even eyelids, to have the frustration of having to deal with different looking eyelids every morning. For those with just plain monolids, having the surgery can make them look more awake. And these surgeries don't even make eyes look 'white', they just create the classic 'Asian' double eyelids. It is true that many Asians consider white people to be better-looking, but we don't get surgery TO LOOK WHITE. Double eyelids/bigger eyes are almost UNIVERSALLY considered to be beautiful, just like white straight teeth, and nobody's condemning anybody for wanting to get braces or their teeth whitened.
@SuperWigMaker11 жыл бұрын
Little you know about makeup, they put so much above the eye and they put eyeliner below and above the eye, this makes the eyes more defined and appears bigger (much similar to circle lenses that have an outer limbal ring that enlarges the eyes) Plus the double fold does make the eyes bigger, it makes a peripheral area above the eye implying that it belongs to the eye and thus it makes it bigger. "Longer" eyes, you probably refer to cat-like feline make-up, but nothing to do with asian eyes.
@darkanser10 жыл бұрын
If it weren't for KZbin and Asians coming forward with this, I never would have imagined that this was going on!! As for this person, I see no improvement from the before and after photos. Yes, I do see the crease but she looked perfectly beautiful before.

I'd like to ask a question.Users from korea, why is it popular to get this eye surgery? Do koreans want to look more western? Or is there another reason, I am really curious about this.
@cheriemcfadden528711 жыл бұрын
Sometimes people tease because their jealous of that which they tease you for. Kids do it cuz they are most honest, but don't know they hurt your feelings. As you get older and hopefully see other people and places with those who may look like or resemble you, you see that beauty comes in ALL different races and ethnicities. Im Happy to Be Nappy!
@curlfairy072311 жыл бұрын
I think that everyone has a right to change their image if they feel it makes them happy. I don't think it has to do anything with erasing your ethnicity or anything else. I am Latina but have afro-centric features and want to get lipo and a tummy tuck because I think it would make my body look great after having had two kids. I won't be any less Latina if I do that and neither is anyone else who changes their look through any means. The fact of the matter is, Tyra was being very pushy about the subject and made that poor girl incredibly uncomfortable for no reason. While it is true that people should be happy with their natural appearance, I have never met a person who was 100% satisfied with every part of their body. Some people choose to live with it and some choose to change it and both are valid choices. My only issue with plastic surgery is the risk you take of something going wrong but other then that we know that we live in a world where beauty matters a lot even for professional careers. Everyone wants to be beautiful and beauty is viewed differently in every culture so to that girl, more power to you. To all those who choose to live out your lives naturally, power to all of you too. Instead of tearing each other down why don't we build each other up instead. Food for thought.

I think that is because mostly everyone in the world already have double eyelids so its one of those things that we ignore or treat as unimportant, but to Koreans and other Asians seems to be an important part of their physical appearance!
@이미나-l9u2 жыл бұрын
I'm a fan of Tyra and a big fan of ANTM from Korea but I feel bad that Tyra seems to be making her own claim to that Asian woman. In fact, Westerners and Asians have very different eye structures, so they have double eyelid surgery due to drooping eyelids. But she doesn't believe this at all! You have to have an understanding of other races.
@puppyanddoglover9911 жыл бұрын
you know koreans still have double eyelids (i do), and i have a pretty big one too with big eyes (I'm korean). but, only 1/10 koreans will have double eyelids (like actual big set ones). So, it isn't about trying to look white or whatever, koreans still do have them naturally, it's just some don't. btw, Africans, Indians, and Blacks all have huge eyes with deep set double eyelids. yeah, that lady was totally trying to look white -.-
@Just-Princess Жыл бұрын
Tyra has been problematic for years. As a young teenager I didn't fully pay attention to it. Although as time went I realized that both on this show and ANTM Tyra was a bully. She's also being a hypocrite. For decades this denied having a nose job (which is far more invasive than double eyelid surgery.

@AnTra23: Having straight hair in the black community does not necessarily translate into wanting to be 'white' so to speak, but having straight/white girl hair is a characteristic that is predominately wanted in the black female community because of the sadly misconstrued ideal of beauty (Eurocentric). Although wanting straight hair doesn't always mean this, as a black female, there is by far a negative impression within the black community concerning 'natural black kinky hair'.
