I’m friends with one of Shirley’s sons, Zach. He left the cult many years ago and hasn’t talked to her for years. He expressed to me how toxic, controlling, and pessimistic she was. She was also physically abusive to him and his siblings growing up. When he announced he was leaving, Shirley cried hysterically all night and begged him not to leave. He said he was done with hatred, he was done with the cult, and he was done with her. He now advocates love, peace, and acceptance. He’s very compassionate, soft spoken, and empathetic. Shirley is devoid of those things. He’s a wonderful person and it’s her loss. She’s a dark, dysfunctional person.

As a young man who is gay, Shirley and the Westboro Baptist Church used to really offend me. Not only was I severely bullied in school for being gay, but I had to deal with WBC’s hateful protests against homosexuals, too. I’m 23 now and getting bullied only made me STRONGER in the end. As for the WBC, I don’t entertain what they have to say anymore. God made me like this and I’m proud of the loving, compassionate person I’ve become. I’m also friends with Zach Phelps Roper, a former member of this cult and the son of Shirley, and he’s a wonderful guy. He told me so much about how his mom Shirley was VERY abusive, controlling, manipulative, and made his life miserable. He couldn’t take it anymore and had to leave. I commend him for that!

How are you defining love, though? There are like 7 or 9 different words that mean love used in the Bible. I do not believe that the love God has for the unbeliever is the same love he has for the believer, and that is why the "us" and "our" are so important in 1 John 4:10. Christ, in John 15:9, says: If ye were of the world, the world would love his own: but because ye are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world hateth you. If Christ's feelings for all were equal, I believe all would be saved, but instead, He put his affections on some and those he saves. Gentleness is one of the nine fruits of the Holy Spirit. She is very blunt in her expression, and Jesus was this not like this. Jesus did overturn tables in the Jewish temple of the religious Pharisees. But to non-believers who didn't know him, he was slow to anger, quick to forgive, and gentle. Jesus was slow to anger with the Pharisees as well, but they were more like venomous vipers who claimed to know Him, but really didn't have a clue and they ran out His patience with their will and desire to claim themselves basically as God to the end. I myself have struggled as a new believer to always exhibit all nine fruits of the Spirit all the time 24/7, as I am sure many believers have, just keep pressing in!! Keep trying and keep going. Love God, and love everyone else. :)

I also think when talk-show hosts have lunatics on their show, passing them off as true Christians, it only serves to cast Christians in a bad light. God does hate sin, but he does not hate His creations. Sadly, some people try to defy God and defy God's nature, which is a grievous sin. The Westboro Group are terribly misguided.
