God I love this. I was taught so hard not to jump on my passes when I was young. But it was my style, for the reasons stated in this video, and I wasn't turning the ball over. Still, I listened to coach and didn't get back to jump passing until adulthood.

I think an underrated thing to note is his vertical/hangtime. The reason jump passes are coached out of players is because 99% of them simply don’t have a 36+ inch very like he does

usually jump passes are a bad idea. You get stuck in the air and can't make your mind up and you turn it over. Haliburton is making high level split second decisions so it enhances his passing game.

Jumping to pass is only a bad idea if you don’t know where you’re going with ball. Tyrese is very aware of where players are on the court so he makes very few mistakes while doing so.

Im a Mav fan and I think you could argue that he’s the best in the league. Because both Luka and Jokic (more so Luka) are also S tier iso players. Luka gets doubled more than anyone in the league, so he creates assist opportunities for himself. (His passes are still mind blowing I’m not hating on my team’s superstar. Luka being able to pass out of doubles is partially what makes him so special) but the fact that Hali is generating these assists without being doubled as much or without being as much of a scoring threat is mind boggling. It’s truly incredible.

@@smatte-loup You could but Luka's career high is 20 in 2021 and Jokic is 18 in 2020 so not exactly the start of their career. Hali just had consecutive 20 assist games with a high of 23. I still think Luka can make the larger bag of difficult passes but by the time he could put up those numbers, he was already putting up 30 a game

The jump pass is for pros and a bad maneuver for most young players . Why? Because should players be covered it's a walk a deflections steal. Now is this new ? No Rick Barry for one used it extensively but he generally showed shot first elevating for a look at the goal but if finding a teammate with a shorter shot it became a pass . Think Jamal Wilkes as a target or cliff ray. Hali is a low turnover guy . With great vision . But nothing succeeds like success as they say so for HIM ITS NOT A BAD PLAY . BUDDY HIELD NOT SO MUCH.

Do you think Hali averages the most jumps per game in the NBA. He might jump 3-5 times in a possession. No other guards do that, cant imagine forwards jumping more than say twice a possession on average at most, but maybe the centers who end and start half of possessions by jumping for rebounds. Hmmmm

Why is it that everything the coach tells you not to do is now acceptable in the NBA. Leaving your feet to pass will lead to turnovers. Dribbling too much just wastes time on the shotclock. Palming and travelling with the ball are the major ones though.

coaches need to coach so many players on school/college level so they have a certain general rules of what to do (or not do) that apply to most players. most of those builds good fundamentals but some of them are more nuanced. Jump passes are indeed bad for most people because its very chaotic, hard to practice in isolation, and u need to have quick reaction/decision making. haliburton is just a beast that nullifies all that risks

Because NBA players are talented enough to make it work. A High school kid cannot reliably do these things, he just doesn't have the Athletic ability and basketball IQ recquired. It takes a high vert to make jump passes viable, and an insane court vision + quick decision making.
