Boyz N The Hood was about the regular hood kids.. you don’t get caught up in the drama .. but it’s all around you so you see it every day.. Menace II Society was about the ones making the streets hot, the ones CAUSING the drama. Long story short both movies are classics & need to be seen regardless.

@@andrew_randall That's a great way of putting it. Menace gave us the other side. Tray and Ricky weren't in the game like that but knew and associated with folks who were and Ricky became an unfortunate and unexpected statistic because of it. Caine and O-Dog were in it heavy. And Caine became a somewhat expected statistic because of it. Both movies show us both sides of the coin, on how the violence in our communities can affect anyone, whether you're in the streets or not.

Two different movies. People see guys shooting at each other in South Central and just lump them together. "Menance II Society" is the story of a gang member trying to turn his life around. But his own actions and conflicts catch up to him before he can move on. "Boyz N the Hood" is actually a story about Black fatherhood and the power it has to counter negative environments. The sheer presence of Furious Styles in BNTH makes it a totally different movie from M2S.

I love both movies. But Menace gave me a better view into the mindset of Black males. As a female I have four brothers. The car scene where the cousins told him to get out really touch my heart. Finally in the end when his friend told him to leave with Jada and he started crying. Him diving on top of her son, and then realizing he wants to live and not die. It shows he was really trying to pull everything together. Just ran out of time. All four of my brothers have turned themselves around so it does happen.🤘💜

Boyz n the Hood was a coming of age film dealing with growing up in early 90’s Crenshaw South Central. With Tray, Ricky and Brenda serving as the main young characters trying to make something of their lives. Douboy is the opposite in his outlook in life and is drawn to life in the streets and doesn’t look past that life until perhaps the very end when he contemplates the tragic needless death of his brother and the vicious circle of death that surrounds his life. But as we learn he is killed soon after. And Tray and Brenda make it to college. Menace to Society is also a coming of age film dealing with the same issues but set in Watts during a similar time period (they were only 2 years apart). But more grittier when it comes to showing the violence. Other difference is Kaine is drawn into the street life more and more as the film progresses, only finding an window of opportunity to leave towards the end. There are also strong male older characters trying to reach out and teach the younger characters about life. In Boyz in the Hood it’s Laurence Fishburns character. In Menace to Society it’s Charles S Duttons character.

I love both films. Boyz in that hood was more about why the hood is the way it is. Menace to society was more about how growing up in a dangerous environment affects everyday decisions. The thing I like most about Menace, is that Cane could literally be anybody. He wasn't a super gangster, he wasn't always hard, he wasn't always smart, he was just trying to make it with the tools he was given. That makes the ending even scarier when he doesn't make it.

Sharif was an “ex knucklehead” which meant he was in the streets before turning to Islam. Stacey is the only one who is not involved in the streets and concentrates on football. Caine appears not to be a serious active member until he helps to kill the gangsters who shot his cousin. @@WillOnCode Both Menace and Boys n the Hood have gangs in them...they just don't mention what set they are from. Kane, O-Dog, A-Wax...clearly they are part of a gang set. Nobody in LA moves like that unless they are in a gang. Nobody in LA dresses like that unless they are in a gang. And Kane is from the projects. Every project in LA has gang affiliations. Stacey plays football but he is still part of the set. Stacey facilitated Kane buying a stolen car and fake registration so he is a criminal. Muslim guy was described as an "ex-knucklhead turned Muslim." Which means a former gang member that changed his life. Jada lives in a house paid for with drug money so she is guilty of conspiracy and money laundering. She was a criminal. She was only clean after her kingpin boyfriend went to jail. They are all criminals, shooters, drug dealers and gang members. Again...different movies. Boyz n the Hood has Tre, Ricky, Brandy and Furious Styles....all good, upstanding, positive kinds of people that live in the hood. Menace is about gang life.

That's exactly how I feel about Boyz n Tha Hood. When Menace II Society dropped it watered down Boyz n Tha Hood to the point of no return. Menace mirrored more of what we went through realistically in the inner city. I watch Menace about 2 times a year to keep my outlook raw.

To me, it was never a comparison to be made. This is how i view it, Byz n Da Hd: Shows how not every black kid in the hood grows up without a father, or every black kid that got killed wasn't a gangbanger, and that when your mind is on getting more out of life, don't do something you can never take back. Menace 2 Scty: Shows how simple choices can have devastating effects. KD wanted to leave the hood, but only when it was too late, and life kept showing him certain things will only get you so far. Both great movies at the end of the day.

@@hassanx9423 To me it seems like Doughboy had never killed anyone up until that point. He felt remorse. Monster was the one that had killed people before obviously because he really shows no remorse but Doughboy killed because they killed his brother. It never shows them do anything other than sell drugs until that point. He was more of a small time dealer than a killer like O dogg. He was more like Caine but not as bad because he would rob people. It never shows him do it so that’s all you can go off due to it being a movie. They more so just did things in retaliation. That’s what I mean not as bad. Caine and O dogg would go at innocent people.
