Two different movies. People see guys shooting at each other in South Central and just lump them together. "Menance II Society" is the story of a gang member trying to turn his life around. But his own actions and conflicts catch up to him before he can move on. "Boyz N the Hood" is actually a story about Black fatherhood and the power it has to counter negative environments. The sheer presence of Furious Styles in BNTH makes it a totally different movie from M2S.

Boyz n the Hood was a coming of age film dealing with growing up in early 90’s Crenshaw South Central. With Tray, Ricky and Brenda serving as the main young characters trying to make something of their lives. Douboy is the opposite in his outlook in life and is drawn to life in the streets and doesn’t look past that life until perhaps the very end when he contemplates the tragic needless death of his brother and the vicious circle of death that surrounds his life. But as we learn he is killed soon after. And Tray and Brenda make it to college. Menace to Society is also a coming of age film dealing with the same issues but set in Watts during a similar time period (they were only 2 years apart). But more grittier when it comes to showing the violence. Other difference is Kaine is drawn into the street life more and more as the film progresses, only finding an window of opportunity to leave towards the end. There are also strong male older characters trying to reach out and teach the younger characters about life. In Boyz in the Hood it’s Laurence Fishburns character. In Menace to Society it’s Charles S Duttons character.

Stacey plays football but he is still part of the set. Stacey facilitated Kane buying a stolen car and fake registration so he is a criminal. Muslim guy was described as an "ex-knucklhead turned Muslim." Which means a former gang member that changed his life. Jada lives in a house paid for with drug money so she is guilty of conspiracy and money laundering. She was a criminal. She was only clean after her kingpin boyfriend went to jail. Can we take the time to appreciate that whoever is replacing Vlad in this has been able to mimic him exactly how he is. His pauses, with the “yea” to follow, agreeing with whatever it was the interviewee was saying then following it up with some comment to make it look as though he knows about whatever it was the interviewee was talking of.

Boys n the hood was put out by a major studio and had a higher budget. By seeing Tyrin’s acting ability in Menace ii society, it would’ve been a bigger risk with him as a major character.

Both movies are Classics. But Boyz n da Hood have more messages than Menace to Society. Most people choose Menace over Boyz n da Hood because they idolize street activity, ignorance and violence. But again, I love both films.
