**PLEASE READ THE DESCRIPTION**
This is the "raw" footage from the Tyrnhaw 2019 tournament I attended on October 19th in Trnava. There were 81 people competing.
The rules are rather simple:
- All valid hits award one point
- In case of a double hit both fencers are awarded one point each
- It is possible to score a point by dominance - dominance in wrestling, dominance by disarming or weapon dominance
- The longsword tournament uses the “Vor” rule - a fencer who (in case of a doublehit) attacked in tempo and did no mistake in his attack (the doublehit is apparently caused by wrong reaction of the opponent) may be awarded a point for their hit (low percent of cases)
- there is no afterblow, most afterblows are doubles, sometimes the rule above is used
- The fights in pools are fought to 5 points, the fights in eliminations to 7 points
Some remarks
- the tournament was run from 8am (first pools) to 9pm (finals)
- not every exchange resulted in score, I cut out the judges rulling to show just the exchanges
- opponents vary in their skill; winning over someone doesn't mean they are bad or weak, it just happens, to everyone
- everyone does mistakes, it's the very essence of our HEMA path to learn and get better
- everyone has their style and video has its limits. Psychology, mood, stress etc. are important factors in every tournament

Hey guys, as promised here are my LS fights from Tyrnhaw (timestamps in the description). Unfortunately I won’t be uploading R&D because not only I forgot to record half of my matches but I also placed the camera in the wrong place and it’s often obscured by judges. Anyways my performance was far from stellar. On one hand I have an excuse of laying down with cold 3 days before Tyrnhaw but still... Even though I wasn’t very lucky - I lost my Elims 16 match against my student and colleague Ondrej who went to win Bronze so I’m happy about that. Ondrej has got great distance management and he’s known for his timely zeckrur or schneller attacks so you have to be careful. Lessons learned, looking forward to my next tournament at the end of November. Enjoy the Dias de la Muerte.

Thank you for uploading! The thing I am wondering is, are there any continuous matches? Seeing a fight beeing interrupted every 10 second is tarnishing it's authenticity I think.

@@ofsabir I wouldn't say that kind of statement is very precise. A considerable amount of duels were fought to first blood which may occur even after a simple touch. Nevertheless there are plenty of rulesets, this particular tournament/ruleset rewards fighters who are able to hit first and have a sense for tempo. If you strike a valid hit there's no need not to reward it or not to pause a fight.

@@MartinFabian Indeed duels were not hours long but people wore armour just like us. So a moderate cut or a not so deep thrust wouldn't end with damage that could lead duel to stop. I have seen just one example of continuous fencing in swordfish. Points got counted just like a boxing match. Each fencer rewarded for hits but match didn't stop for counting points.

@@ofsabir this is a simulation of blossfechten after all, though i do agree not every cut of thrust would penetrate - most will and most of these will deal debilitating damage. Continious fencing may reward kind of behavour widespread in battle of the nations, for example, where hitting opponent more and faster is preferable to defending urself.

One of the most valuable resources on YT! Not only great instruction but a fantastic look into the cutting edge of practical application of HEMA tactics and form. Being able to observe your progression and the changes you make over time are supremely valuable, and your skill seems to bring out the best in your opponents. Cant say enough good things about this channel!

Thanks for sharing! I hope more tournaments start doing continuous fencing like swordfish did, those were amazingly fun to watch

They have their ups and downs and I don't think they are very good for large tournaments, but I like to do it as a training approach :)

Love watching your fights. I'm a female fencer that often studies your matches to try and figure out how to improve my own game. Still haven't managed to get that signature thrust of yours down, but I'm trying! My biggest issue is choosing when to do it, which you seem to have down to a science. I guess further study is required! :)

Thank you very much HEMA-Chan! There are a plenty of good drills how to recognize the correct tempo for timing. For instance you pair-up, bind in langort to assume the correct measure and then you thrust forward when your partner-coach signals you an opening (for instance by going into different positions or just putting the blade sideways. Endless repetition, proper signal recognition (e.g. going to upper positions means you need to thrust to Ochs, signalling lower ones calls for a Pflug-like thrust), good extension and limitation of the body movement (getting rid of unnecessary moves) is the very essence of successful thrusting :) I'd also recommend to read some Rapier sources like Giganti or Fabris just to see their reasoning and work with tempo as such. All the best and good luck with your endeavours :)
