I'm half-convinced that not only is this trend part of the overall "body positivity" movement, but that it's a low-key drive to normalize trans "women". By making female characters tougher and tougher to distinguish from men cosplaying as women, I think they are trying to get people, particularly kids, used to the idea that this is just what "women" look like. That its normal and desirable for a "woman" to have a lantern jaw and an Adam's apple.

exactly, if in a game i can create a my character i make first a male that look like i`am looking like but more beautiflull, then when i like the game my second character is a female, a beautifull female i love playing as in that game. i would never ever create an ugly person too play as why should i. in many older games i play as the female from the start because she looks so much better and they mostly have more beautifull customisation in the game for her then the male counterpart. i just like kicking ass as an beautifull beeing thats all because it is fun, and games are in existence too have fun with. i don`t need an reminder how horrible reality can be in games, i just like too have fun with it while playing it. no complicated stuff nothing just having fun is my main goal while playing a game, if the game is no fun too me i don`t play it or stop playing it and next time look a bit closer before buying it. it is simple as that.

To me, this 'uglyfication' thing in gaming started with Dragon Age Inquisition. Both Sera and Josephine must have _very intentionally_ been 'uglified' otherwise not a single artist in this industry would have purposefully done that. But it was just the start in that game, so the issue is limited to just a few select "chosen" characters. However, the real offender I think was Mass Effect Andromeda. The devs for that game probably looked back at the ghastly models of Oblivion and thought "let's just modernize those!" and they went with it. There's no other explanations. Since Andromeda came out there's been a race within the big studios in the industry to 'surpass' the previous offender, it is an unceasing, relentless force of darkness.

Thinking about recent western made games, I thought Kassandra from AC Odyssey had a nice design. She was fit and strong, but looked good imo. Lara Croft from the Tomb Rainder Reboot is another. Generally, one trend I'm noticing is that western developers have adopted the more "photorealistic" approach, which doesn't necessarily translate into a more appealing art style. Eastern developers still made their characters somewhat "Anime", in spite of them being partially photorealistic as well. Generally, I'm not a big fan of extreme "gritty" photorealism anyway.

Ive been thinking about it and maybe it is also a problem of worse face animation. Because sometimes a character looks good in certain angles, with certain expression, and then poorly in another angle or using another expression. The same face. For example the girl from Star Wars Outlaws, I dont think the face is unattractive. But if you pick certain angles and expressions, then it looks worse.
