Doctor Strange saw 1.7 million possibilities, where they won just one time. If u r seeing these possibilities as different destination, so to reach that destination they have to take a road. And that road consisted different actions(peter getting angry, and slapping thanos). Ofcourse Doctor Strange knew half of the universe would be destroyed. He did say that there was no other way. To reach the destination(in which they won) they have to follow the path where all these events happens. Doctor strange played a masterstroke. Thanos turning into a baby wont have happend. Becoz he had reality stone, his reality wont have changed(explains why doctor strange didnt use mirror dimension). If he saw so many possibilities, he must have seen one possibility where they stopped peter, where they cut thanos arm. But it wont have worked on the long run, the HISHE is showing only one event, what if this event had resulted to something worse?? So many outcomes came becoz he saw same fight with small different choices, one possibility had been where tony got killed, where they took the gauntlet, where thor aimed for the head, where doctor strange fought differently. If we r seeing possibility, then that includes a moment with different choices. If they both(strange nd thanos) were fighting, strange should have used another spell(one more possibility) or maybe another(makes another) every time he waved his hand, it could have resulted into different things. U r fighting, u can use ur leg(right or left) ur fist(right or left) ur elbow(right or left) ur knee(right or left). That just made 8 possibilities, the fighting goes on, more possibilities come
