TYT UV8000E 10 watt HT cross band repeat review

I realize this video is 3.5 years old so I doubt you will ever read this , but gratitude compels me to write anyway. As a new HAM and a TYT 8000D owner your video has opened up a whole new world for me . I was not even aware of the TYT software or where I might find it , much less how crossband repeating worked. I own three of the TYT 8000D's " an earlier version " but was able to use the " E" version of software to open crossband and test it . It worked like a charm ! My wife works at home and is actually studying for her technician lic. This feature will allow us to communicate simplex from my work van mobile unit to home and not tie up repeaters , with talk about our children or other topics that might annoy other HAMS , " like the grocery list " or " complaining I am busting my HAM radio budget " . It is video's like this that help the hobby grow and expand . You sir , are a credit to the HAM community !

The 18.8 Abbree antenna I use on my UV8000E, has a SWR of 1.02 on 146.775, and a power of 9.98 watts. So it all depends on how well matched your antenna is too your HT.

@@wdsracer The only other two HTs I have are the Baofeng F8-HP and the UV-5R V2+. Both are okay radio's bu the TYT beats them both hands down. Add a Abbree 18.8 inch antenna and you got a very good radio. Some are calling the TYT the Baofeng killer, its that much better.

I've had my 8000E for about 9 months. Great radio overall and has done quite plugged into the van antenna for hitting the repeater up to 30 miles away. My only complaint is that as things went on it the receive filtering has gotten worse. Regardless of location I get a lot of noise and interference regardless of squelch level. It got to the point there was a constant hiss and noise and the squelch hadn't even been broken. I did a factory reset and got that cleared up. However, it still breaks squelch in bits and pieces too often with noise with the . Annoying to say the least. It makes it a bother to keep on. Other than that, great radio. I've taken to using the TYT TH-UV88 as my 24/7 companion radio though. No cross-band and only a 5 watt, but for the price of a Baofeng UV-5r it is a heck of radio. Similar case (tough one) as the 8000E, great talk and receive and battery life. I initially loved the UV8000E, but that front end noise issue has been disappointing.

Sorry, the system glitched - I had a UV-5 with the higher capacity battery and the readout went bad intermittent on the first digits left to right. I bought a UV-5 plus. I used my moto tool to d as you did. A perfect modification! so now I have the high capacity battery, being a woman I used tape as a guide to straighten the front battery top surface and finished it with a finernail file. Looks factory perfect, thanks, Ella KI4UQZ 73s

Wow, I can't believe this was 7 years ago! Thank you for the video, I learned a lot! I just bought my first 8000E last week from Radioddity in anticipation of passing my FCC tests. I'm having problems finding extra batteries for this radio. Radioddity is out of them and so is Amazon. Anyone know where I can get spare batteries here in the US?

CHIRP now supports this radio. And with my Abbree 18.8 inch antenna, I get a SWR on 146.000 of 1.0 and a power output of 10 watts. So it all depends on the antenna.

Great review, but I must disagree with your premise that having all the different radio programming software in separate programs is useful. Chirp lets you copy your channels between various radio models. I can use the same channel lineup on my Leixen mobile and Baofeng HT by copying and pasting into the radio tabs.

Hi! I use a pair of UV-5Rs in Brazil when me and my brother go on trips with 2 cars since we usually go to remote regions where cell coverage is not total or mountain regions where there are lots of shadows. I guess the TYT would be better than the UV-5R but how would it compare to something like the QYT 8900D? I also don't like to spill 25W all the time so if you have some recomendation for a device that can put high power eventually but that also can work on 5 or 10W most of the time, I'd be glad - something cheap, pleae! Also, we use PTT mic and the kenwood connector - if I'm not mistaken - that both the TYT and the UV-5R use have given me some headache - specially with my brother who's not into tech stuff. Do you think a better PTT with the TYT would have less bad contact issues? Thanks!

I recently bought one of these radios. Today, I sat up crossband repeat. I was holding the radio and one of my fingers was on the screw for the belt clip. I keyed up another HT to see if it worked and the TYT fried my finger. I didn't think 10 watts would burn that bad but it sure as heck did. Have you experienced this? I guess I need to return it?

Battery full charged, without TX (just on stand by - RX), option 19 in menu RX power saver was OFF, 18-DW=OFF, battery last at the first radio - 25 hours, the second radio - 28 hours until itself turns OFF. From total empty battery, needs 8,5 hours to full charge (until green lit).

Just found this video and I think one of your statements is wrong. You say the charging base will accept the Baofeng barrel. While PHYICALLY it will fit, Baofeng runs a 10V plug and TYT typically runs 12V. Make sure you check the voltage compliance and not just the physical.

I see in the video that at one point you change your crossband frequencies from what you had originally programmed to what they were while doing the output test. I realize those frequencies were not crossband frequencies but was the radio unable to use those frequencies for the repeater. I am looking to use this radio as a UHF only repeater if the feature will allow this.

See TYT UV8000E cross band transceivers were 136-174 and 400-520MHz. (which allowed them to be used on General Mobile Radio Service (GMRS) - GMRS uses channels around 462 MHz and 467 MHz. Now the new TYT UV8000E limit the frequencies to 144-148 and 420-450MHz with notation label inside battery compartment: "Device must be restricted to occupational use to satisfy FCC RF exposure compliance. See owners manual for specific operating requirements." Guess this prohibits/eliminates new TYT UV8000E cross band transceivers from transmitting on (GMRS)

You can also enable an option that allows you to turn the crossband repeater function on or off in menu 11 using the key pad. But it has to be enabled in the programming software. I think its a great radio but I'm also a noob.

I'll just have to purchase one of those repeater relays with the 3.5 -2.5 plugs for my other Baofeng HTs. They really should have made it to where you can manually program it into cross band repeat mode.

Thanks for the video. Can it do single cross-band repeat (like the Wouxun)? ie. if you only need to boost your signal in the uplink direction but can hear the downlink signal directly?

Here I thought that it really didn't have a true crossband repeater built in!!! Thanks! But I do have a silly question. Does this radio have dual receive? Or is it dual watch? And can the thing receive a signal on VHF while transmitting on UHF? I saw that the speaker is active during your QSO, but I have a very specific application I'm looking to replace one of my radios. (Full Duplex Crossband AllStar portable node). Basically, can you press the PTT, and transmit while receiving and hearing a signal on the other "side" of the radio. Thanks!

Repeat can work only if we have V/U or it can work in the same band V/V ? I have see many videos on youtube and all they have up VHF and down UHF so that mean only this way can work the repeater ?

Yes it‘s V/U or using a duplexer cavity or have two radios connected via a long cable and set apart vertically several meters - that’s what I gathered from several videos and posts on the topic. You cannot have V/V close to another or in one handheld.

I'm trying to picture the configuration for cross banding to a repeater. Set the talking HT to emit on the x-band frequency and receive on the repeater's output frequency while setting the 8000E to receive on the talking HT output and transmit on the repeater's input? Can this radio even cross-band within UHF or VHF or does it need both bands for that?

Hi there.. I had a question. I have the same ht radio and When listening in on the radio it gets really hot. Anyone know what is this from or is it normal. It overheats withing 3 minutes that I need to turn it off and take out the battery to cool down and it's so hot that I can't even touch the back metal cover. Please let me know what this can be from. Is yours the 8000D model.or 8000E model? The D version has serious overheating issues in XBand Rpt mode where as the 8000E supposedly does not.

Hi. You can not measure the power into the improper dummy > SWR1:1.3 makes impact to power measurement...but 1:1.8 SWR makes completely improper measurement and useless results!!! Your radio has not 9W when you are measuring it into 1:1.8 SWR!

10w sounds like a battery killer to me, so I'm not sure I really buy the gimmick. Though if you were to use it with an external antenna of some sort, then it could serve some purpose, but as it is, i definitely would not want 10w transmitting next to my head. :/ - WU2F

I have watched those emissions on you tube and I decided to buy TYT UV8000E. So at the beginning I must say I'M DISAPPOINTED!!! I have two pieces now, I have tested on many frequencies UHF and VHF. I have not yed tested in open area, but normal I need them to be functional in TOWN, IN AREA WITH BUILDINGS AND HOUSES! With original small antenas, at the earth level, not from the floors high, I have reach connection approximately JUST 200-300 METER AIR LINE!!!!!!!! With others, hi gain antennas, JUST A LITTLE BIT MORE, about 400-500m air line!!! (town area) and of course set on high power. I Don't know what are those WATTS but with 5w Motorolla I have ~4km air line in town area( my town is about ~6km in diameter). I'm so DISAPOINTED And I think something is made in electronic on these chinese toys to show those watts on the SWR Power meter but i believe in reality they shows some FAKE POWER. From earlier, I have also two pieces Baofeng UV5-RTP 8W and With 17cm long antenna these are better from TYT UV8000E.

Something must be wrong in your case. I can cross over 5km range with 8000D at high power with long whip.

Just a heads up. Your demo of cross-band usage is illegal in the US. While you are able to properly ID your UHF-VHF path, the VHF to UHF path coming back to you is not being ID'ed. The person you are talking to cross-band can not legally ID your UHF transmissions.

If you call your sign every 10 minutes and at the end of each transmission, doesn't that go out on the UHF as well? I'd think that would keep it legal.

Unfortunately, no. You have to ID each transmitter, not just the frequency they are operating on. The transmitter on the downlink to you will not be properly ID'd

Not if you ID both channels you are broadcasting on. In Estes Park Colorado, the local Ham Radio club has their 2m and 70cm repeater are linked. So if I broadcast on one they here me on the other. As for broadcasting on the TYT, just give your ID on both frequencies. So KI7BSL listening on 2m-70cm, well what the frequencies are, that should solve that problem.
