Dios bendiga a Israel 🇮🇱 .

This tune was composed by Rabbi Shnuer Zalman of Liadi who lived from 1745 to 1812. The words are from ancient liturgy "Our Father, Our King, Thou art our Father. Our Father, Our King, we have no King but Thee". There is also vocalizations without words as you recognized.

The song is attributed to the baal hatanya, the founder of one of the biggest hasidic sects today, chabad. Frome the region of Ukraine and Lithuania. (Avraham Fried and Benny Friedman are Chabad chasidim ) It is sung during the high holiday season as a special prayer called "Our father Our king" . It is a deep meditative tune to inspire introspection and deep emotion specific to the service before and during the high holidays. Motty is actually about 30 years old. His tradition is from the hasidic sect called Viznitz, and most of the sects coming from the same region (Poland Galicia Hungary) dress in a similar fashion. His shoes are slip ons, or loafers, they are in the old European fashion. The reason he is wearing them in the video is because they are worn specifically for the sabbath and festivals when tying a permanent knot is not permitted. The white stocking or long socks, perhaps could be traced back to earlier times in Europe, look at depictions of French philosophers during the enlightenment etc.. The song is sad perhaps but the intent is introspection and awakening latent emotion. The fact that you question whether the singing wordless parts are in fact words. Is because the wordless parts illicit thought just as much or more then the actual words. This is a feature found predominantly in the chabad hasidic tradition of music also called a nigun.

Just a side note: The name Motty is short for Mottel, which in turn is the Yiddish version for the Hebrew name Mordechai. Thank you for covering his beautiful rendition of this very meaningful prayer.

This particular melody is wordless in the beginning, followed by the words "avinu malkeinu ein lanu melech ela ata", followed by more wordless "chanting". The tradition is, that often, song without words will penetrate the heart more than actual lyrics.

Hey, PortuguesePai, translation is "Our Father, Our King, we have no King other than You". Aveenu means our father (like the word Av, which means "father", or Abba, which means "Dad", and Malkeinu means our King.) if you go back to the Abba song by Avraham Fried, I commented that this theme that G-d is both Fatherly and Royal appears again and again, and the emotion often stems form the idea that we appeal to G-d's "fatherly instinct" (again all of these descriptions are just to help us understand the relationship, but Judaism insists that G-d doesn't have any actual emotions in the way that humans do) to be merciful and forgiving to us. IN any case, this song is the second line of a prayer said in synagogue during days of repentence (such as fast days or the days between Rosh HaShanah and Yom Kippur). Each line in the prayer begins with the words "Our Father, Our King", a recognition that while we realize that we must listen to G-d (as one listens to the king, and refusing a king's orders has some serious consequences), we are begging him to treat us mercifully the way that a father would treat his own son, tempering judgment with mercy. The first line of the prayer means "Our Father, our King, we have sinned in front of You". And the second line is the subject of this song, where we again repeat "Our father, Our King" and essentially say that even though we haven't always listened, we only have one king, in other words, our disobedience was not because we have allegiance to another king (G-d forbid), it's just that we messed up and need Your mercy. (Again, it's metaphorical, think of the old feudal kingdoms where not listening to the king might mean that you have been disloyal and decided to follow another king --- versus just making a mistake and begging for mercy. Although of course in the case of G-d, there are NO other kings other than Him, so the metaphor isn't exact --- it's just "al derech mashal", by way of analogy.). That explains the tone of the song --- heartbroken that we haven't been as good as could be, recognizing that we need mercy and that if justice were always strict we'd be in trouble . Additionally, the whole idea of the chant is to meditate on what this really means for our relationship with G-d. Hope this helps you understand and appreciate this tune and this genre. Also, definitely will check out that Porteguese music. No doubt that the many styles of "Jewish music" are based on many different encounters over thousands of years with different surrounding cultures and musical traditions. Do you have a recommendation for a male singer of that style?

Looking forward to see your reviews on them: Beri Webber Lipa Schmeltzer Motti Illowitz MBD Shmuli Unger Shulem (already reviewed. He also has them) Avrum mordechai Schwartz Shlomy Daskel Levi Folkowitz Many of the above singers are alumni’s from “The Shira Choir”. There are some “Hasidic” boys choirs as well. 1) Jewish men aren't allowed to shave off their sideburns or "peyos" (lit. "Corners"). In the Ashkenazi and sefardi community, they fulfill this requirement by just having sideburns (no shaving above the cheekbone) or some are more stringent and grow out their sidelocks/peyos on the side a bit longer, tucking it behind their ears. The chassidim though are even more stringent and grow their peyos super long as you see by Motty. Shulem had them too. 2) what he's wearing is classic chassidic garb. The long coat is called a "bekishe". 3) motty isn't a kid, he's actually about thirty years old! The pitch of his voice and the lack of facial hair is due to a disorder. 4) I'd suggest you check out yaakov shwekey, one of the biggest stars in jewish music for over a decade Congrats on 500!

Hey man, love your content! The side locks are called “peyos” (pronounced pay-ose). Shulem Lemmer, who you reviewed already, also has them. Beri Weber is another fantastic Hasidic singer I recommend you check out. All orthodox Jewish men are supposed to keep a certain amount of hair on the sideburns, but Hasidic Jews are extra stringent and keep them long. The curling is really just stylistic, I believe. Regarding the way he’s dressed, it’s traditional Hasidic garb. The hasidim (plural of hasid) sort of stopped time, in terms of their dress, back in the old days in Europe, to prevent too much assimilation into secular society. As for the lack of lyrics, a song like that is called a “niggun” (admittedly, kinda similar sounding to the N word, with an added “n,” but this is a very old yiddishized Hebrew word, so yeah, not meant to sound offensive 😬). Hasidim in particular are very big on niggunim (plural of niggun). They convey emotion and soulfulness, without the need for words. In this case, there are some words, but many niggunim have no words at all. Also, if you want a wildly different, more fun sound, you should check out Joey Newcomb. He’s very popular these days (and is actually an old friend of mine), and has a super unique style, even for Jewish music. He, too, is Hasidic. A lot of his songs are in English. Also, completely different, more traditional, vibe, but Ohad Moskowitz and Simcha Leiner (another person I know from before he gained fame) are really good! They’re not Hasidic. Both have gorgeous voices, and are very popular.

Usually these types of songs are sung without musical accompaniment. There are some words to this song, but most of it is wordless. The wordless tune is therefore done by voice, which we do by the ayayay that you hear. The song is not sad, but solemn. This type of song is called a Niggun, they are often wordless or contain very few words, and are very very traditional. This niggun is a niggun of the Chabad Chassidic sect. Moti is not chabad, but he is singing their song. Chabad have some very slow, soul stirring niggunim(plural for niggun), in line with the contemplative nature of their philosophy

This song is from our prayers on our days of repentance, and I'm telling you it is the most beautifully chilling feeling when everyone man woman and child sing it all together from the depths of their hearts. I'm sure someone else already said this but the meaning is simply "God we have no king but you" And yes it's mostly a ohm like filler that exists in many Ashkenazi prayers

I listened to the Portuguese singer you recommended and you said that Moti Steinmetz reminds you that they have the same singing style and also the voices are similar. so no. Not really close. With Moti, these are soul songs that are taken from the book of Psalms. The Oi vie that repeats itself these are not words, it helps the singer to break himself and submit himself to Heaven-God. He is a humble Jewish soul singer who does not go with fashions that he avoids like fire. Regarding his clothing, it is authentic Hasidic clothing worn only on Shabbat and Jewish holidays. It is a tradition of clothing that has lasted for hundreds of years in Eastern Europe. Thank you for the analysis of the poetry and your attempt to understand what this phenomenon is. It's just the tip of the iceberg. bless you

Correct, he's wearing a Streimel. Not all Chasidic sects wear a streimel, some wear a Kolpik (mainly Polish/Lithuanian), some wear a Spodik (also mainly Polish). Streimels are typically worn by Jews from Hungary and Romania. These hats are mainly worn on Shabbat, Holy Days, and special occasions. Satmar sect wear Streimels for the latter purposes, but wear a Platchige Biber hat during the week. Chabadniks wear a fedora. The high socks are also worn by married men in some sects. As in Motty's case, he is Viznitz (as my family historically was) so married men wear the high knee socks. The coat he is wearing called a Bekishe, also worn by married men on Shabbat. His side curls are called Peyot or "peyos" in Yiddish. It's a commandment in the Torah not to cut the corners of our hair. Avinu Malkeinu is a immensely emotional song. Reading the english translation does not do its justice.

The word "Peyot" means "corners". According to the Torah, a doesn't cut the hair on the "side" of the head. Many people don't grow it out, but won't make that area bald. However, most Jews have it moved away from the face because they believe that the hair on the head is seperate from the hair on the face (beard, etc.). For Yemenite and Hasidic Jews, it is noticeable because they are allowing it to go near the face. When Sephardic Jews lived in Muslim countries, they would have it in the turban.

No affence really. You seem like a very nice person and i appreciate your open listening to different kind of things but I'm afraid that as much as it got to do with motty s. It will never be mediateable. No words in any language will convey genuinely the state of mind that more than he is singing he's davening . He is really emotional because hes preying and begging to ha-shem- to g-od, in one of the most humble, moving..., you name it ,,-preyers in the jewish spiritual work. You cant analyse it from the outside. You have to feel-really feel it from the very within. Thats the reason why the comparison to anyone alse is simply irrelevant. Now, for all your questions about the clothing you can find information everywhere about Hassidic tradition. All the very best and good luck.

First of all Your coverage and emotion are amazing in relation to the fact that you don't know the language. You should know that in Judaism there are secular and religious And among the religious there are many currents, The Jews came from many countries in the diaspora. Some of those who came from European countries are Hasidic And they have different clothing and also a mixed Hebrew language called Yiddish. The followers wear tights like the women. In previous reviews you asked about the tallit, There is a large tallit which is usually worn in the morning prayer with tefillin. And there is a small tallit under the clothes, with threads outside the clothes. The hair around the ears is called piot, it is not a mitzvah but a symbolic practice of Jewish identity. The words of most of the songs of the religious singers are taken from the Torah (Psalms or a prayer book) That's why they sound like a prayer and an emotion.

Oh that's a cool fact to know, I was always under the impression that it was just a personal preference between like the Kippa, Streimel, fedora, ball cap, etc etc. Thanks for that tidbit!

So different communities wear different garb and headgear. The usual is that litvish men wear a fedora and suit. Chassidim, depending on which branch they belong to, might wear a hat during the week and a streimel on Shabbos/holidays/special occasions such as a wedding. Some Jewish men would just wear a kippa/yarmulke daily with no hat. Some might go on a trip let’s say to an amusement park in a polo shirt and baseball cap. Others would go on said trips in whatever garb they wear daily. It all depends on the community one belongs to, but that’s the breakdown on one foot. Oh also some chassidish men might wear black socks or white socks or leather boots, depending on where their branch of hassidus came from in Europe and what their customs are. Hassidim overall came from Ukraine, Poland and Hungary, while litvaks came from Lithuania, Belarus etc. Again, that’s on one foot. :)

Actually I need to correct myself, Jewish people who follow the Bible strictly, without exceptions [ aka "frum" ] are either "litvish" or "hasidic", hasidic people have this different way of dressing, litvish jews wear more regular clothing
