I worked at gas stations that rented U-Haul trucks and trailers in the late 60’s and early 70’s. The hitches that clamped on the bumper weighed a ton and I can remember installing them on bumpers when the temperature was below freezing and my hands were so numb I couldn’t feel them.

I remember renting the 24 foot truck around 1979 and it having stick shift on the floor, very crude all steel dash and gages, no A/C and it drove like a freight truck.

I have one of those "universal U-Haul hitches" and one of the older small trailers in good shape. Found them at a storage lot auction; I got both for $100. The bumper hitch is a collector's item only; there are no bumpers these days it would fit. To say it's heavy-duty is an understatement.

I've bought several old U-Haul trucks for my trucking company. The first one was one of the 1960s Dodges that hauled parts and gear for my first trip to the Northwest Territories of Canada. It spent the rest of its life up there as the poor motor gave up north of Edmonton Alberta and had to be flat towed into Yellowknife. I also bought several late 60s and early 70s Ford F700s that were used for short haul work..

I owned and operated a moving service in AZ from 1993-2020. I owned two trucks but often rented U-hauls as well. The newer fleet ( 2017) 26 foot U-haul moving vans are fantastic! The interior is not unlike the Starship "Enterprise." Easy to drive. Quiet. Dependable. Affordable. Top drawer.

Seems to happen a lot. My sister tried to screw me out of 15 grand and I caught her. She was the executor. I caught her after the fact. I have a feeling it was a lot more. However, I was able to prove at least that. Back then 15 grand was a lot of money. That was like a brand new full-sized Oldsmobile or Buick at the time. I am sure that's more than I paid for my college education.

My first memories of U haul trucks was my Dad renting a U haul to transport all of my high school band equipment to competitions in the 80s. Back when the trucks where stick shift . It wasn’t easy driving those older trucks . Later down the road I had a moving labor service and I loaded and unloaded lots of U haul trucks and renting and driving many as well . I ended up buying one of the used U Hauls to start my own delivery service . Great Historical video . Sad story about the family issues.

This was interesting... one way moves. I’ve learned the average American moves almost 12 times in his or her lifetime. Couple that with Americans having a huge amount of stuff ... stuff that gets carted from place to place to place ... and this creates enormous business for UHaul, storage companies and moving companies. This country stays on the move. Continually moving and “upward mobility” are in the fabric of America. UHaul is a big part of this dream. Thanks for this!

When my Mom and Dad got to where they couldn't take care of themselves I went to West Virginia to check on them and it wasn't good. I call my boss and explained the problem to him. He said or me as a AFM to transfer a 24ft truck from there to my area here in Florida and save the gas receipts to turn in as to where it wouldn't cost me 1 cent to get them to my home. @@videodistro Penske is no doubt cheaper, and the equipment is much newer, however, Penske doesn't offer trailers outside of a car trailer or a car dolly. You can't pull one of their car trailers or a dolly behind your truck. It has to be pulled by one of theirs.

I was a Uhaul dealer for a few years in the early 2000s . This company treats their customers like shit but they treat their dealers even worse.

In the 70's I rented a lot of trucks and had Uhaul to pull a few tricks on me, like over charging for the fuel and clean up fee. The last deal they pulled I reserved a 20 footer and a dolly and got there right at closing, they said I was ready to go dolly inside. When I arrived to where I was to load I opened the back, NO dolly but the back was stuffed full of moving blankets all new. I called the dealer first thing next morning about the dolly and he started yelling you signed for it you owe for it and slammed the phone down. After more debate he said 175.00 for the dolly, never did he mention the blankets. So I sold the blankets at flea markets for a great total and paid for the dolly, after that I rented from Ryder.

Loved it when U-Haul used to used Dodge trucks for their chassis.

Recently tried to rent a open U-Haul trailer, if you don't know how hard they are to find try to find one. Decided to buy an open trailer, used because I could buy a used trailer cheaper than rent one way-999.7miles , well I chickened out and ended up getting rid of most of my stuff , putting stuff on the luggage rack and into the SUV and with my 4 cats made the trip, the used trailer after I was done- give it to a church, the price for rent$480 to buy a used one, found one for$350 .
