I wonder what inspiring backstory I’ll discover here.” Now picturing my full moving van out of control, running off a cliff and exploding in the middle of herd of psychotic suicidal unicorns who ran towards the falling truck bomb.

I worked at gas stations that rented U-Haul trucks and trailers in the late 60’s and early 70’s. The hitches that clamped on the bumper weighed a ton and I can remember installing them on bumpers when the temperature was below freezing and my hands were so numb I couldn’t feel them.

I have one of those "universal U-Haul hitches" and one of the older small trailers in good shape. Found them at a storage lot auction; I got both for $100. The bumper hitch is a collector's item only; there are no bumpers these days it would fit. To say it's heavy-duty is an understatement.

Wow! What a backstory, disturbing, to say the least. Money & greed can ruin everything, except the company - in this case, U-Haul. The company is very easy to rent from, in my several experiences. Seems to happen a lot. My sister tried to screw me out of 15 grand and I caught her. She was the executor. I caught her after the fact. I have a feeling it was a lot more. However, I was able to prove at least that. Back then 15 grand was a lot of money. That was like a brand new full-sized Oldsmobile or Buick at the time. I am sure that's more than I paid for my college education.

I've bought several old U-Haul trucks for my trucking company. The first one was one of the 1960s Dodges that hauled parts and gear for my first trip to the Northwest Territories of Canada. It spent the rest of its life up there as the poor motor gave up north of Edmonton Alberta and had to be flat towed into Yellowknife. @@craigmarr7986 I have to say, you were still fortunate. I used to believe the same thing you do. Until I worked with a young man close to graduating from college. While it's good to see any young Black man about to graduate from college; Jason was a selfish, obnoxious, pretentious, childish, piece of human garbage. I once had to step in to prevent our security supervisor from taking him out back and beating some manners into him. I didn't do it for Jason's sake. Reggie, an older Black man, and a Vietnam veteran was struggling for money at the time. Last thing he needed was to get arrested, spend money he didn't have to hire a good attorney, and be banned from ever working as a security officer for the rest of his life. (You need a spotlessly clean criminal record to work in the industry in America.) I wondered what type of disgusting examples of Humanity could have raised such a turd as Jason. One day, I found out as I met his mother and his aunt. I was blown away at what truly wonderful people both of them were! I literally couldn't believe it! Clearly, Jason would have turned out to be the utterly worthless joke of a human-being he is even with two excellent influences in his like; like his mother and his aunt. Sometimes all the love, discipline, and hard work a parent puts in is wasted.

This was interesting... one way moves. I’ve learned the average American moves almost 12 times in his or her lifetime. Couple that with Americans having a huge amount of stuff ... stuff that gets carted from place to place to place ... and this creates enormous business for UHaul, storage companies and moving companies. This country stays on the move. Continually moving and “upward mobility” are in the fabric of America. UHaul is a big part of this dream. Thanks for this!

As I write this there is a U-Haul trailer behind my pickup truck, almost emptied of my last load of stuff from my move out of CA. I didn't trust their trucks for earlier trips, I favored Penske, but the trailer was just fine.

I was a u-haul dealer for many years, and the story about the creation of u-haul as told here is close, but not the same as I was told from my first representative, who was a friend of Leonard.

Until the mid 80's all U-Haul trucks had manual transmissions. I remember renting a U-Haul over Ryder just because of that.

Have rented for U-Haul several times over the years. Trucks, trailers and car haulers. Never any breakdowns or issues... but I never stopped to think about the backstory. WOW!

"...lowering the fleet's average age from 11 (years) to 5..." - that's one of the distinct things I remember about U-Haul trucks while I was growing up: a lot of them looked banged up, filthy, and unreliable. It's good to see them take some pride in their products.

To this day you can not buy a used U-Haul trailer. They cut them up for scrap.

Family fighting over who gets what, is a real life events in many families. Not just famous people, this happened to me after my Dad past away his own family his Brother and sister in-law both stole a $4 million place with large oversized apartments that could be rented out to tenants. In the end we lost everything and they only paid us $80,000 after selling the place and profiting the money. I believe they will someday pay for their wicked ways and greed when their earthly time ends for stealing.

A U-Haul, today, is no longer $2.99 per day. It is $29.99 per day, on today’s inflation calculator. That does, however, depend on the size of the truck 🛻 that you are renting. Your friend, Jeff.

So very sad, how human sin, will show its evil face in the form of greed, jealousy, envy, selfishness, power. Just horrible! Pray for the family to reconcile to mend their ill feelings through forgiveness and repent, ✝️🙏🏻✝️🙏🏻✝️🙏🏻✝️🙏🏻

U- Haul always reminds me of an old friend of mine now gone. In the 70s he would come home from the Navy and it was almost impossible to rent a car in my town at the time. So he would rent a U-Haul truck for a few days. We went cruisin in a U-Haul!....GOOD TIMES!

Recently tried to rent a open U-Haul trailer, if you don't know how hard they are to find try to find one. Decided to buy an open trailer, used because I could buy a used trailer cheaper than rent one way-999.7miles , well I chickened out and ended up getting rid of most of my stuff , putting stuff on the luggage rack and into the SUV and with my 4 cats made the trip, the used trailer after I was done- give it to a church, the price for rent$480 to buy a used one, found one for$350 .

I was a U-Haul employee off and on for 17 years. I lived through some of those days. I believe I met L.S. Shoen about 4 times in my career there. L.S. knew how to take care of his employees. I have even read his book titled "You and Me". Good job.
