I worked at gas stations that rented U-Haul trucks and trailers in the late 60’s and early 70’s. The hitches that clamped on the bumper weighed a ton and I can remember installing them on bumpers when the temperature was below freezing and my hands were so numb I couldn’t feel them.

I remember renting the 24 foot truck around 1979 and it having stick shift on the floor, very crude all steel dash and gages, no A/C and it drove like a freight truck.

I have one of those "universal U-Haul hitches" and one of the older small trailers in good shape. Found them at a storage lot auction; I got both for $100. The bumper hitch is a collector's item only; there are no bumpers these days it would fit. To say it's heavy-duty is an understatement.

I've bought several old U-Haul trucks for my trucking company. The first one was one of the 1960s Dodges that hauled parts and gear for my first trip to the Northwest Territories of Canada. It spent the rest of its life up there as the poor motor gave up north of Edmonton Alberta and had to be flat towed into Yellowknife. I also bought several late 60s and early 70s Ford F700s that were used for short haul work..

Couple that with Americans having a huge amount of stuff ... stuff that gets carted from place to place to place ... and this creates enormous business for UHaul, storage companies and moving companies. In the 70's I rented a lot of trucks and had Uhaul to pull a few tricks on me, like over charging for the fuel and clean up fee. The last deal they pulled I reserved a 20 footer and a dolly and got there right at closing, they said I was ready to go dolly inside. When I arrived to where I was to load I opened the back, NO dolly but the back was stuffed full of moving blankets all new. I called the dealer first thing next morning about the dolly and he started yelling you signed for it you owe for it and slammed the phone down. After more debate he said 175.00 for the dolly, never did he mention the blankets. So I sold the blankets at flea markets for a great total and paid for the dolly, after that I rented from Ryder.
