This feb was my 10 years and it was time to renew for another 10, a process that I have been faithful in doing for the past 30 years; and for some reason this year I'm having issues, I'm 6 months into going back and fourth with the passport service, it's very frustrating.

Joy Washington Ok, I think I need clarification on this. You have 5 years from the date of expiration of your passport to renew it, as long as the passport was issued to you after the age of 16, and has a 10 year validity. In short, if your passport was issued 8/15/2004, you could renew it by mail, since it is only 4 years since it expired. What issues are you having?

Once again, the U.S.A. is breaking international law and standards when it comes to it's own citizens and residents. Every country is obligated to issue a travel document to citizen and non-citizen resident alike, if there are no other risks associated in doing so. In the case of non-citizens (which seemingly they're trying hard to turn this defenseless old man into) typically this means issuing internationally recognized documents fulfilling the role of a passport using one of three options: 1. Travel Document for Resident Foreigners; 2. Travel Document for Refugees, aka the 1951 Convention Travel Document; 3. Stateless Person's Travel Document. HOWEVER, I believe they would even refuse issuing one of those, which brings us to a very interesting, but little known piece of international law: The '1954 Convention Travel Document' is a travel document, unlike a Stateless travel document (stateless person by a signatory of the 1954 Convention Relating to the Status of Stateless Persons) ISSUED TO A PERSON IN CIRCUMSTANCES OF ANY DIFFICULTIES IN GAINING A TRAVEL DOCUMENT FROM COUNTRY OF BIRTH. The cover bears the words "Travel Document" in English and French (and often in the language of the issuing state) along with the date of the convention, but does not bear the two stripes appearing in the upper right corner of the front cover of refugee travel documents.

This is very similar to what happened to my father back in the 70's, it has nothing to do with being an immigrant or having an immigrant family. My dad had no birth certificate at all because all the records were destroyed in a fire in Tennessee. He had no medical records, it was a home birth, yada yada, anyway we had to pull up census records to prove he was American. Let me tell you that was a bear back then to get, there was no internet and you got major run around from all the vital statstics offices. It took about 7-8 years to get all of it together. If we hadn't been able to find census records, from when he was 10, he would have been out of luck. We even had his tax records from 30 years prior. Then they still didn't want to give in, we had to get the State Rep and a lawyer. Back then the State Reps actually Did their Job.

They had no problem getting him to serve in the US Navy. But when he wanted a passport the US government now said he doesn't exist!

Tara Westover is white and born into a Mormon Survivalist family. She didn't even know the day she was born. But she's white and from Idaho, never went to school until she was 17 years old when she started college at BYU. She got her PHD in History from Cambridge England. She never had any problem getting a passport. The USA is really clucked up now.

Chris Gordon Then she must have proof of citizenship. No passport otherwise. Skin color has nothing to do with it

SHe is as white as the driven Mormon Snow. She and her family had no idea on the date she was born. Relatives had to come and swear what day she was born. She never had a birth certificate. Someone picked a date. Westover had a delayed birth certificate. It sounds more like what people in 1930's Germany had to go through to get their German card. Otherwise, they had no rights. Is this how you want to treat other Americans like this man? They use this tactic in states with Faux Voter laws like Florida where if you move there, you have to spend a lot of money getting records they want to prove who you are. Like this man. If he was a woman and was born in a field and has no both certificate, and mas married multiple times and changed her/his name when married, you have to provide proof of marriage and divorce for each and every one. Its just another way of saying it is a Jim Crow Poll Tax on poor people. You have no idea how limited US Citizens rights are becoming now. Just like Nazi Germany in the 1930's. If it happened then, it can happen again here.

I'm a vet and they are refusing to give my wife permanent or even temporary residency or give our son a visa to visit us.. My wife hasn't seen her son in over 10 years. They make up all kinds of illogical excuses yet they have no problem taking my money.

The American public doesn't understand that being born somewhere doesn't make you a citizen of that place. You retain whatever citizenship your parents have until your 18 and you make your own contracts with the governments you choose. You can serve in the military without citizenship. A lot of people have done it to earn their citizenship.

We elect officials to serve citizens. Many people never contact their elected representatives for help. I write to my senators (remember, every state has 2 senators) and my congressman. They (and their staff) can be very helpful. I think they really LIKE to help us when we're reasonable. There are a lot of battles we don't have to fight alone. We should all get to know our federal representatives, state officials, county and city officials. Don't be invisible.

nemo227 I've said this more than once. Your elected officials do not have the power to issue passports, nor can they make it happen. All they can do is interrupt the process. It is never a guarantee that the passport will be issued.

That's an important point to keep in mind. I've never tried to get a passport, don't want to leave the USA. I did cross the border into Tijuana in the forties, day trip with my parents. And I went to British Columbia for a week in the early seventies. Things were different then; times change, rules change. Now I desire to stay in the USA but I love to talk to foreign visitors. Anyhow, we tend to under-use our elected officials. We pay whether we use their help or don't. It's good to get to know them, find out if they're helpful or not, find out if they are worth the money we pay them as taxpayers.
