I remember an exercise from some years back. Some Americans came to practice with us in northern Sweden. Most militaries have checklists when they go abroad, like "we are going to country A, they have B conditions, we need to bring C equipment, and want the host to provide D equipment on site." Well, in their checklists for Sweden, they clearly saw there was Murder Snails in Sweden, so they requested Murder Snail repellant to be provided so they could protect their stuff and not bring our snails back home. It didnt matter how many times we tried to explain that there wasnt any Murder Snails that far north in Sweden. They still wanted their repellant. So they got it. And applied it generously around all their stuff. Like lots of big white rings of suspicious powder. That was the "crack camp" as a result 😂

When Fear and Ignorance masquerades as Competence. But thats probably unfair of me, and i certainly do not specificly mean the officers making the requests, they sure got their orders from somewhere else. From Sweden with Love - Kami P.S Btw, the troops should have gotten the real swedish snail repellant: Siccors and salt. "Thats right, Soldier, this is what we use. Now patrol around the camp and make examples of the enemy. These are not protected by any laws or rules for conduct."

So what is the salt for?"

Did my service in a subarctic brigade in Sweden. Temperature at -35C is no joke. You need proper training and materiel designed for these conditions. But we can do this kind of warfare. Most nations have no winter capability besides a few special forces. Semper miles 🇸🇪

@@stiglarsson8405 Despite being a satire, there is one thing, or statement, in Starship Troopers i like: Training cant be 100% safe. The military NEEDS to have casualties during it. Thats the one thing out of control during a very controlled event that makes everything in it "Real". Yes, its highly dramatic, we are training for war, big concept, defence, abstract combat, supplies, concepts that despite being deep in it, are very far off from the Normal, the Real. But if we hear that Axel got shot during an exercise because some idiot didnt handle their rifle with respect, well then all those words said about weapon safety realy slams home. And since its military training and that knowledge is heavily connected to other knowledges the rest of the training starts to slam home as a result. And we dont even Need to hear about Alex. Its enough to know that such things DO happen in training to cement it as Real in the mind. From Sweden with Love - Kami TLDR: Military is a dangerous life, and needs to be dangerous even in training for its own good.

We usually stacked the weapons on the shore, with someone on guard. It's hard enough work bulding a bridge or a pontoon without dragging a weapon around as well.

I was a field engineer in the army during my 7,5 months of conscription in Sweden and we didn't carry weapons while building pontoons or bridges. Not even helmets or splinter vests normally. The idea was we'd likely not be right on the front lines normally, and it was more important to get the crossing build fast and efficiently so the people doing the fighting could get where they needed to be. Not to mention, if you were to fall into the water, you'd sink straight to the bottom.
