No surprise that they haven’t trained for this type of mission (drones etc.). I’m pretty sure the guy that shot down the balloon didn’t have specific training for that mission either. The preponderance of drones is pretty new (I saw a pioneer drone when I was in the navy in the mid eighties but those were early days for the tech). It is a testament to the training that they have done on other missions that allows them to be adaptable and successful in unforeseen circumstances. Good case for the need for human pilots.

Need to bring back the Sky Raider. What's Old Is New Again. Thach didn't have much training to defeat the Zero with a Wildcat until he had to do it and invented the Thach Weave. These guys are the modern day Thach.

A flotilla is two or more squadrons of small warships, when I say small ships, they may not all be small. Like in the 60's my ship was part of COMCRUDESRON 4 with a Captain operating as Commodore.

Here is a brief synopsis from my research and analysis of various sources, including Q&A sessions with a few experts, I have accumulated the following information on the training program for Navy pilots on counter-drone operations. Please note that this information has not been confirmed or denied by official sources: Counter-Drone Operations Training for Navy Pilots Objectives are to equip Navy pilots and alike with the skills and knowledge necessary to detect, track, and engage drones in various scenarios. Scope:: * Simulator training: Practice intercepting and engaging drones in simulated scenarios * Tactical training: Learn about drone characteristics, tactics, and vulnerabilities * Weapons systems training: Train on operation and employment of weapons systems used against drones * Air-to-air combat training: Develop fundamental skills for engaging and defeating aerial targets, including drones * Electronic warfare training: Learn to use electronic warfare capabilities to disrupt drone communications and control Outcome of that training: Navy pilots will be proficient in counter-drone operations, able to effectively detect, track, and engage drones in various scenarios. Please note that this synopsis is my personal understanding the analysis made available to me and has not been officially confirmed or denied.😊

The aviation branches of the USN, USMC, and the USA, to say nothing of the fighter-based units of the USAF, could definitely benefit from studying the Mathias Rust flight of 1987, as well as the Count Von Rosen efforts in the attempted breakaway of Biafra in Africa in the mid-late 1960s, wherein Von Rosen more or less shanghaied a collection of small two-seat Saab-built aircraft, fitted rocket pods to them, and took out half of the Nigerian Air Force in one strike. Also of interest might be the efforts of the Tamil Tigers in Sri Lanka in the early-mid 2000s, when the Tigers were fitting small bombs---anywhere from 50 to 250 pounds---to the bellies of Czech-built sportplanes and using them operationally. Those little Cessnas can make the entire world stop and take notice when used aggressively. The Rust flight put the entire Russian Air Force to shame and public embarrassment, and cost a few military leaders their jobs and possibly their lives (such was the standard punishment for mission failure in the Soviet Union back then). The entire US held its breath when some random crazed teenager drove a 172 into the side of a skyscraper in Tampa scarcely a few months after 9/11. All because of a lone kid in a Cessna. Figure out how to fly slow---a definite challenge in an air superiority fighter, who's mission is to get somewhere fast and meet the inbound enemy before it gets to target. Even A-10s, with their high maneuverability, are gonna have a challenge. They can go slower, but even so they're lapping the 172 with every pass. Casmo, with his AH-64, would probably be better suited to a light aircraft intercept---he can go fast enough to intercept, and then slow enough to hang with him while various entities try to talk him down, and failing that, armed enough to put the Cessna down if negotiations fail.

I had interpreted that article a few ways in addition: 1. This is a kind of war the US hasn't expected trained to, the adversary has been expected to be different. 2. This is just a new kind of warfare period that Russia's invasion brought into normalcy. 3. Locating the enemy and weapons requires using techniques that were expected to be less relevant in a high end conflict. 4. These strikes require a focus on sensors, data sharing, and intel at a new level that hasn't been traditionally used outside of 5th+ gen combat scenarios. My other thought was the planning element is probably critical to ensuring that every strike matters, because the stakes are high. The US can't afford to kill civilians, because the mission itself is to preserve civil shipping (alongside the inflationary pressures of a trade disruption). And the stakes are high because of the Iran factor and their spread of Islamic revolution and how it's causing problems in many countries. The US wants trade to flow and FoN but doesn't want a full war with the Houthis. Thus the commanders just focus on doing the mission and gaining learning experience from this new kind of war. That will then go to the rest of our armed forces and prepare them for a naval war with drones, ASMs, and BMs.

@@tedmarynowski3881 They actually did that as a two parter about a year and a half ago. Wombat really liked it for its military accuracy. I participate in another forum where there's a former US Navy pilot who thought that no amount of military accuracy can make up for otherwise how bad it is as a movie.

From what I have read about WWII many tactics where developed in the field from navel to air and grunts on the ground it seems like the Germans and the Japanese where using new never before seen tactics that had to be dealt with on the spot by those in the field.

Mover. The Israelis were good at air to air gunnery using the Mirage III. Most of the air to air kills were done with cannon and not missiles. A drone is cheaper to shoot with the Super Hornet’s cannon than air to air missiles. After all, how many drones (cheap) can the Iranians provide to the Houthis? Thanks for the video. Fly safe! Semper Fi!

Don’t target drones already exist for many years?
@anthony7697
@anthony7697 8 ай бұрын
Yes and no. The 'target drones' of the WW2 era on on were actually war weary/old decommissioned aircraft (other than some P-63's ordered special to be used as targets - so called 'pinballs') in which some (like the pinballs) were flown by pilots (these planes had a ton more armour and special rounds were used that would break apart easy on impact with little-no damage) while some were also remote controlled, especially for early missile testing. I believe some old F-4's/16's are still used for the later of the two methods. So even their targets were still full sized aircraft, unless more recently they went to actual drones as targets but I don't know that they did (just a guy that's read about particularly WWII aviation, and some after as a hobby), so it's very much a night and day scenario there. What's also funny in a kinda dark way is that one way drones like this aren't even a new idea - during the second world war they needed pilots to take them off (which led to deaths including one of the Kennedy's), but the US actually took old war weary bombers that weren't really viable for normal use anymore, set them up to be radio controlled, and then packed them full of explosives with the intent being they'd ram it in to the target. Between limitations of the time and enemy flak batteries was never really successful, but time has made it far more viable and cheaper in todays technology.

Depends on what it's for. There are some retired F-4s that were turned into target drones. There are obviously a lot smaller purpose built target drones that are theoretically reusable. However, cruise missiles are basically kamikaze drones.
