On March 30, 2024, while visiting Baghdad, Dimitri Lascaris spoke with Hussein Barood, the elected spokesman of the Iraqi Movement for the Belt-and-Road Initiative. For years, the movement which Barood represents has advocated for Iraq to become a fully-fledged participant in China's Belt-and-Road Initiative. Although there has been progress in deepening Chinese investment in Iraq, the U.S. government has sought to obstruct Iraqi development by controlling the oil and gas revenues upon which Iraq critically depends.

What he said is true. Iraq's oil revenues are currently deposited in the American bank accounts of JP Morgan and Citibank, with payments received in dollars through the US Treasury Department. Also. A 2004 protocol signed between Iraq and the US binds Baghdad to sell its oil solely in dollars.

A measure of how far off course we are resides in our self delusion, fantasy abstractions not being sequestered, and from our concrete external experiences, and our desire for a healthy society being sequstered from our willingness to make politically sociopathic choices. The failure to distinguish and separate identity ethnicity from religious identity, personally, culturally, and legally is a gas-light of self identification. Whether done as an attack toward or by someone, or as to gain political/social capital is still and injustice to the society and all who interact with the members of that society. This behavior sets the stage for inequity and conflict in all matters of permission. Religion is never an ethnicity, regardless of culture. Corruption and war is what happens, over time, when political sociopaths are afforded adult authority in a society. Political sociopathy; a willingness to do harm for the sake of opportunity, social capital, hierarchy, profit and/or pleasure.

Very interesting conversation, and intriguing information. There is no doubt that there is opposition to BRI, not just in Iraq, but in lots of other regions as well. The US sees China as an economic rival and there is an economic Cold War underway at the moment. Unfortunately, the Iraqi people have suffered for a long time, first it was under Saddam, then the sanctions, the wars, occupation. Now they are being controlled to the point where they don’t even have control over their own wealth. It’s obvious who is in control. There is a nexus between the Wahabi kingdom of Saudi Arabia, other regional countries & their Super power friends to keep Iraq in bondage.

Great interview. There are so many aspects of life in Iraq under US control more than 20 years after the 'invasion'. Mr Barood goes back in history talking about the Wahabites but he failed to remember that the map of the Middle East was drawn by the French and the British in the late 19th and early 20th century. Every country has borders that are drawn with a ruler and a pen on a map. In any case the situation is politically worse than I thought. I don't see how anything could be resolved in this century or even the next at the pace it's going.

Respectfully to Mr. Barood, Eritrea does not support "Israel" in it's genocidal conquest against the Palestinians or house their, and by extension, any American presence in our land. There are many migrants from Eritrea in "Israel" so the government (that has been struggling against western hegemony and sanctions since it's independence) cannot speak as loudly as it wishes against the genocide.

It's not about religion. It's about energy, imperialism, hegemony of sea & land trade routes, economics, exploitation and control. BTW: Dimitri, Russian channels are reporting the Russians are in control of the Suez Canal since their warships entered the Red Sea 2 days ago. If true, it's a geopolitical game changer as the Suez is the most crucial waterway for global trade! Do you know about this?

Yes, Israel has had plans on the back burner to build a canal parallel to the Suez Canal along the eastern border of Gaza from the Red Sea to the Mediterranean. This is likely why Israel is already constructing a highway through the middle of Gaza to hook up with the US's supposed floating "aid" pier. Google "Ben Gurion Canal" which was envisioned as far back as the 1960s after the Egypt nationalized the Suez Canal in 1956 and took its whopping trade revenue out of the hands of former French and UK investors.
