This was just before the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece (August 13 - August 29). The United States got a Bronze medal in TEAM competition and also a Bronze medal in DUET. For both events, the order of finish was Gold: Russia - Silver: Japan - Bronze: USA (Competing for USA in Duet were Alison Bartosik and Anna Kozlova). No underwater cameras for this "Letterman" performance

I Googled the Athens Olympics and the team took the Bronze, with Russia placing first and Japan in second. Cool! The exact same order as the team captain described.

To Dave's question, how /do/ they know they'd have aptitude? Do they all just start copying other kids at the pool, and the swim coach says "stop it, or we'll transfer you to the synchro team?"

I totally agree! The Olympics should be about sports. Speed walking is stupid, but at least it's a sport. Gymnastics and diving are also not sports. They are competitive art forms. Nothing "performed" to music is a sport!
