Borg's first and only win over Connors at the US Open after having lost to him in 1975, 1976 and 1978. Borg said that he finally felt he was playing well at the US Open and was devastated after the loss in the final to McEnroe

Yes. Borg's finest hour in many ways. Finally stood up to Connors on a HARD court at the US Open. Too bad Msc was waiting.
@SuperHammaren10 ай бұрын
He played some bad points in the third set -which were important ones. Mcenroe played very well on these and Borg got so mad on himself that he just stopped playing seriously. Very strange but he was close to burnout in this point.

@@diadora9292 that was a very tortuous match...painful to watch....terrible tennis, many unforced errors...I was there for the entire day, 4th row. The Borg Connors match was a total bludgeoning, based on Borg's greatest service games in his entire career. Jimmy could not pick up the serve that night.

@@diadora9292é verdade. Foi um jogo duro para ele. Inclusive o ponto final foi polêmico. Vitas Gerulaits achava que a bola tinha caído fora.

Another great upload 🤓🎾 By any chance do you have the match between Borg and Vilas in the nations cup 1980 (it was their last official match) I have found only a small clip on the Reuters video archives

Had Borg won the ‘76, ‘78, ‘80 and ‘81 Opens, he would have won 15 majors. Food for thought: he might not have retired in ‘83 had he won the the ‘81 Wimbledon and Open finals. How do you retire after winning three majors in one year?

I think, his burn out resulted, because he never really enjoyed/loved playing tennis. If you love the game, you will ,master a defeat much better.

Não sei. O Borg sempre foi uma pessoa enigmática. Pouca conversa, ninguém nunca sabia o que ele estava pensando.

It would be kind of interesting to know which player or players started using the oversized modern racquets back then that inspired Connor, Macenroe, Vilas. and all the other "old school" players to switch over...kind of like Lance Armstrong was the guy that changed all the riders from steel, or aluminum to the carbon fiber that all the riders use today. I don't think it was Lendel cuz his racquet was not oversized...but he was the first guy to start dominating the sport with more power
@tomsd865611 ай бұрын
I would say the bigger the racquet head, the better, IF you can maintain control of direction and accuracy. The older I get, the more I appreciate the big head. But I have to adjust so that I can still maintain control. It's easier at the amateur level because you don't swing big. It's even easier when you're old because you can't swing big even if you want to.

Gene Mayer was the 1 player who used a bigger size racket. A Prince 110 graphite racket. 😉🎾🎾🎾

@@Lava1964 I thought the same thing. I do wonder however if Connors wasn't quite right for this 81' Open. Andres Gomez took Connors to a tie breaker in the 5th set in the third round. Connors had to draw on all the intensity he had to get that win. Although Connors did have an easy time in the 4th rnd and QF.
