The U.S. is working to recover and learn more about the unidentified objects the military shot down over the weekend. CBS News chief White House correspondent Nancy Cordes has the latest. A balloon costs, depending on the payload, about 100k , but about 2 Million to shoot it down, and only if the balloon flys at a low altitude of about 60000ft. And you cannot shot it down with gunfire.

Where are your sources on the balloons material and ability to withstand being shot and downed by a piece of molten steel traveling thousands of feet per second? This sounds like nonsense as I've seen photos of the balloon up close and it is clearly made by some type of common PVC plastic or vinyl material. EDIT: Also, the word you are looking for is spelled "shoot" not "shot".

It is surprising to me that USAF did not snag the the balloon with a C-117 or other aircraft and draw it into the cargo bay. All we needed to do was to have the fighter aircraft make small punctures (using onboard cannon) that would allow the balloon to lose alltude gradually where it could be grapled. The USAF has been doing similar operations like this for decades. If there was a concern that there was a self destruct mecanism risk the grapled balloon could have been towed to an area and released. Most likey the balloon payload would be more intact than falling from 60,000 feet.

The one object had cables swinging from it. I think it had a payload of some sort. It already released it by the time the fighters got there. The cradle was empty. I wonder if its some sort of espionage device or a ground based signal jammer. Who knows.

Few if any weather balloons have solar panels and its unlikely a weather balloon with solar panels as large as balloon 1 had is a weather balloon. Based on panel size and considering charging power reserves, the panels were powering several hundred watts of equipment which would be highly unusual unless it was capturing massive amounts of data in the form of photos and more importantly low energy radio signals. Radio signals from microcontrollers, closed networks, and point-to-point networks can not be easily captured by satellites but would be key to understanding and attacking infrastructure. It is also likely that the balloon was interrogating and attacking the encryption of low power data stations and APs. These closed, low power, and poiint-to-point radios are the second oe third greatest threat to US infrastructure, and many are protected by weak encryption and obsurity. It is also likely that control of said balloon and data collection were shared duties of remote and local (Chicoms on the ground) operators and data collectors. Even if this balloon was fake, the infrastructure weakness exists, and balloons are unique attack vectors that should mot be dismissed.

What makes you think they weren’t detecting them before, but had orders to just track them. There was nothing unusual about any of this. And the “sudden” discovery of more, that are now publicly reported, after the original policy has changed, should make more sense. Had to hear that one from someone else, too. The reality is that we are doing the same to other countries, to encourage “deterrence.” They know what we are capable of doing, and we know about as much about them. It’s a strange way to run things, but keeps all sides assured of what you might be up to doing with all of it. It might even help to allow diplomats to work it out about these misunderstandings, instead of armies.

Hainan Island 🏝 is the likely launch pad. Satellites 🛰 have a blimp on the pad now. So the flight path through the vast northwest Pacific was guided & clever. 2 of the 3 other air ships debris are in Canadian territory. The Yukon craft fell from 8 miles altitude at 150 knots est. terminal velocity & hit land. The other is in 250 to 750 feet of fresh water south of Duck Island, Ontario. Another was hit over the arctic coast near Prudhoe Bay in Alaska. Blown to bits. David Martin is the best. Let me demonstrate with this stick of dynamite and this bird house 🏠 🐦. Debris from the Myrtle Point crash site which fared better as the targeted balloon above deflated without the payload being damaged. It is in FBI custody reportedly now. 🔬 👁 🧐
