The decals look great your right no way could you airbrush them on any better,i love the blue decals over the pearl white,but if i ever build one i would have to tone the aztecs over the white areas down a little,i would dust a very diluted pearl over them just to knock them back a bit,they would look more in scale for my tastes.

Boyd- Excellent work!! amazing job especially with the lighting. Some Points to help other modelers: 1.The RCS thrusters should be off the 90 degres to port and Starboard, they should be just aft of the port and Stbd running lights. 2. Add the 4 red /green running lights on the back of the saucer to ether side of the impulse deck structure. also add the 4 red/green running lights on the top of the secondary hull. 3. Add the white running light on the top of the shuttle bay structure and also the one on the bottom end of the secondary hull. Some white green and Red running blink, some don't. 4. the 2 lights on the front of each nacelles are flood lights to light up the rear saucer and starfleet pennants on the secondary hull. 5. the original idea was that the tops of the nacelles would light up not the wrap around grills them. (that's why they are clear in the kit) only on ST-DSN's CGI models were the grills lit. The Maintenance/Cargo bay detail is still poor and need to be embellished. I have references to support all the above, just contact me. Again amazing work Boyd! I look forward you watching your next video. Live Long and Prosper!

I really love it when modelers do their starship models all lit up and everything. Gives me inspiration. I’m considering, but decision not final, of doing a redo model of the Enterprise-B with the lighting to the nacelles and all. Similar way to how Boyd did the Excelsior, Aztec decals, lighting and all (though some of the decals for the Enterprise-B would have to be custom made and printed).

Hi Boyd! Excellent Build! I'm not a big fan of "Wall paper" decals on the ships, but these look pretty good. Done an excellent job! For the decals, Friend of mine showed me a way to not get silvered decals, basically he "Floats" them with Future ( or some kind of acrylic gloss if Future not available). Basically you make a "Pool" of future in the place you want the decal to be, then with the decal, you wet it, and slide it off on to the "pool" and then you press your paper towel on it to pick up the extra future like normal. The future acts as glue for the decal, and eliminates the air pockets. This works quite well with decals that have been left in water for too long and have floated off the backing sheet.

I've always loved the Excelsior! Beautiful ship! I don't think I'd have the patience to drill out all of those windows. Now maybe it's just your camera, but the Aztec decals look a bit stark for my tastes...I think subtlety with aztec patterns would suit the small size of this ship better. Still a beauty. And, your lighting work is perfect for this!!

I think AMT did a great job capturing the colors and the patterns of the aztecs that were on the studio model almost exactly. When I do all the work to put them on I want to see them! It's always going to look a little more bold in a smaller scale. I looked around for painting masks but all of the sets I saw were not even close to what the patterns should look like on this ship. They all looked like Enterprise refit patterns.

Hey Trekworks just a heads up, only the lighter blue color is used for the Excelsior the darker blue is for the DS9 CGI version of the ship so the Hood, Melbourne and Valley Forge. But you can use the lighter Blue for the Hood because they did use the studio model for the Hood when they made TNG.

Thank you for sharing this build! I've decided to pull the trigger on building a custom model like this one, but I had one question. In my rush to get all the bells and whistles in after-market parts I realized I don't know what to do with them. I mean when it comes to lighting things like the clear bridge or the structure just behind the engine mount, do you drill into it, or is just masking off the windows and painting it enough to light it up accurately? It depends, the first thing I want is accuracy. I looked at the various paint masking sets for this ship and none of them were close to what the patterns should look like on this ship. The second thing is the scale. Trying to paint on the intricate panels on a model this small would be a challenge to make them look as perfect as these decals are. Much different then doing that on a 3ft long 1:350 scale Enterprise.

I'm sorry but I skipped over this detail or don't remember... Did you end up using the kit-supplied neck, OR did you use an after-market piece to support the saucer? Again, I apologize... Sometimes I do fast-forward through videos on KZbin. Bad habit, I know... It's a legacy of clicking through TV channels during commercials or skipping through the unavoidable preview trailers you stick you with on at least half the DVDs and Blu rays on the home video market... Back on topic... Your build came out very nice! Probably the best advertising Round 2/AMT could get for the new kit AND the decal set!

P.S. -- I'm NOT even a huge fan of the design. I like the original Enterprise-Refit the best. Still, I prefer the "original" Excelsior configuration over the Enterprise-B. I hated the additions they made to the Enterprise-B. The Excelsior was a much sleeker-looking ship even if it DID come off as looking like a whale next to the Enterprise-Refit and Enterprise-A. The darker blue I think looks better on this model than the eggshell-blue you usually see on the Enterprise-B and the later Enterprise-C. Most of the changes made for Star Trek VI were good ones for this model; much better paintjob in Star Trek VI IMHO. The reason why most of the TNG appearances of the Excelsior-class have the original eggshell-blue paintjob is because of course the first three seasons of TNG were "in the can" before Star Trek VI was released in theaters. All the stock footage used of the Excelsior-class in TNG was shot well before Star Trek VI went into production so of course the Excelsior was still in its original Star Trek III configuration with the old paintjob, original bridge, etc. It's only in the 30th anniversary episode of ST: Voyager (the tie-in to Star Trek VI) where you see the Excelsior in its "production"/non-experimental/Star Trek VI configuration after it was modified into an operational vessel. Again, the two pieces that I like better from the NX-2000 are the larger impulse deflection crystal and the original shuttle bay. I felt the twin smaller impulse deflection crystals look a bit dinky and out-of-scale on the saucer dish. I also felt that the original shuttlebay looks better than the revised shuttlebay seen in Star Trek VI. If I got this model, I'd probably stick with the bridge from Star Trek VI which I think looks better BUT build with the original large impulse crystal and the original shuttlebay.

I think they intended the Excelsior to be not well received. It was the jist of the scene between Kirk and Scotty when she was revealed. The design has grown quite popular over time though and I like it myself. And yes the Enterprise B with it's extended sides made it look very bloated and cumbersome looking.

How did you do the saucer windows

I applied the window decals and used them as a drilling guide and drilled them open with a .5 mm drill bit mounted in a hand held pin vise. Turning the bit by hand works great for doing precise small holes.

TrekWorks hey Boyd I've looked at pictures of the studio model and pictures from the Star Trek 6 and it looks like you may have missed some lights the pictures I have it looks like there are some lights on the top and bottom on the back of the saucer where the impulse engines they look like they line up with the neck area did you see them or were they not there on the studio model ?

I couldn't find any pictures of the top of the ship with the lights on so I went by what I saw in some of the film clips from the movies. I think I worked in most of the lights that were there and for being such a small model I'm happy with how it came out.

Objective opinion here… Excellent build! The craftsmanship is immaculate, as always. But to be honest, the Aztec decals are too heavy and could toned down a bit. The lighting is way too bright, particularly the nacelles and the interiors. That’s no fault of the builder and may be a camera issue, of course. The sounds are cool, but, on a lighting kit of this quality, could certainly be more expansive. I seriously mean no offense, but your work as a builder deserves more than the results this ultimately gave you. It looks as good as it possible for what you have available here. But I personally think it could be even better with the right materials, given your amazing skills.
