A long time ago, in a life far removed from where we are now, we came of age. We were Sailors, yet untried and not as salty. But, war changed all that. We did what we were trained to do. We lost shipmates, gained lifelong friends, forged the men we are today. For better or worse, I wouldn’t trade it for the world. Excellent video, hope you’re doing well, and thanks for the memories!

I was on the ship during this homecoming. I worked on the deck. I was a Gear Rat. After I got off The Saratoga I went to College at Texas A&M I was in The Corps of Cadets. I got a degree in History. I also had my Commissioning in 2000. I went through Surface Warfare School. My first assignment was aboard The US Cruiser Port Royal out of Pearl Harbor. It sort of sucked being a Ensign. I was promoted to Ltjg. I then served on a few Destroyers. Right now I’m Commander. I’m The XO of The USS Shoup. In about six months I will take over Command. .

Thank you to all who served. My brother was aboard the Saratoga during Vietnam in the 1970's. I had no idea what life on a carrier was like. He was in supply and we lost him to cancer in July 1994. He was very proud of his service on the USS Saratoga even though the time was horrible. God bless the USA

USS Saratoga CV-60, May 1989-Feb 1994, I was there, my 1st ship, my 1st deployment was Desert Shield/Storm and went through the Suez Canal 6 times. That was when I was young and was looking to the future.... then I lost 21 of my brothers. December 20, 1990, I still think of that night, that could have been My fate, but I could never get off because of the long lines. Rest well, my brothers...Brent and Anthony, I never knew you would become such a part of my life and remember you every day!

Shipmate. Thanks for the memories I could smell the jet exhaust from vultures row. Up in the foc'sl by the anchor chains is where my future career in music, ministry and entertainment began. I practiced guitar right where you sat nights, for hours on end and led the Wednesday night men's fellowship and music group in the upper Chapel during the 85 Mediterranean cruise. What a privilege to watch your video all these years later and have the opportunity to relive those moments. IS2 D. Bergman, VF-103 "Sluggers'" TARPS Photo intel LPO.

Thank you for sharing this video. I was attached to VS-30 from 84 thru 87. I just saw a documentary on the Sara and it said one of the reasons Jacksonville did not make the Sara a museum was lack of funds due to the city acquiring the Jags 😢..... Enjoyed the video! AE2 Mark Green

AWESOME VID!!! I was an AME AN in the CAG 11 seat shop with VS-37 on the Big E during the West Pac 82/83. For DS 7 years later I was a pilot flying CODS. I Remember this time vividly. Watching anxiously as the fleet left Norfolk that early fall of 1990 was only to be offset with the joy of the boats coming back that next spring just as this vid shows!

The 8:53 mark is tough to watch. This aircraft AA403 was piloted by Lt. Cmdr Scott Speicher on the night of Jan. 17, 1991 and was shot down by a Mig-25. He was able to eject from the aircraft but died of his injuries not long after. RIP Scott.

Hi Scott, I was in VS-30 Maintenance Control for 2 years prior to this cruise and was transferred right after the cruise started, so I didn't have to depart with you guys (I did go around the horn on INDY). In the barracks, I shared a room with Kozemski for a time then moved to an apartment with a AT3 who was AIMD on this cruise. I found your video when I was showing my daughter scenes of SARATOGA and what I did in the Navy. Thanks for posting, great memories! See the VS-30 group on Facebook.
