Join us as we explore the reality of US humanitarian food ration manufactured in 2020. We'll be tasting and discussing the special American rations distributed in crisis situations. Consisted of a higher caloric intake than United States Military MREs these are designed to sustain someone for a day if need be.

All of the meals are vegetarian so the ration could be used internationally regardless of local food taboos. The only animal product used is limited dairy.

it's also because the food in this ration is easily digestible and can be given to malnourished people without having to worry about blood sugar levels

The HDR used to be yellow until 2001. some cluster munitions have bomblets in the same yelllow color, prompting the US to switch to the Salomon color for the HDR.

I actually really like these rations. I use them for camping all the time. The lack of beverages is the only thing I don't care for. Usually just bring along some freeze dried coffee and then these are golden.

@Butterworthdasyrup try the barley stew with the red pepper flakes. I usually boil the entrees. Otherwise, the rice dishes taste kind of gross and dry.

Some pop tarts can be dry - need some water to go with it. Even the ones from the store can have a slight greasiness on the outside of silver packet. Must be a manufacturing packing thing. Actually everything sounds good. Not the calories Americans are used to eating.

As others have pointed out, it's not a fighting ration, so first of all, a lot less calories, no need for isotonic drinks, extra sugar and all the goodies you get in your usual MRE. No need for TP, "garbage" bags, water purification and so on. Those packs are usually handed out with bottled water from pallets if it's required. Similar with it being vegetarian at a minimum to be able to be "used" in as many situations as possible and not having the india pack, middle east pack, and so on. Reflective foil packaging is not an issue, because the people that should be getting them should not be trying to hide in bushes. Lastly, "good" food, especially the ones reminding soldiers of "home cooking", is good for morale (note the WW2 ice cream barges for example), which is an issue you'd want to cover when supplying frontline troops, much less of a concern when feeding refugees.

Yeah, makes sense. If I ever ended up as refugee (god, hope not, a lot would've had to go wrong in west and central Europe then :D) I'd prolly be very happy to have such meals and be fed even if comparably below military MRE standards regarding some taste or additives. It's funny how a lot suddenly becomes magic the more (literally) starved you are. In daily use and not counting camping etc, who'd really normally eat this? When you are getting hungry and got nothing else, it must seem like heaven. Or at least decent. A goodie bag, a happy meal :D This is the face you make when you get/eat it: :D

I keep a couple cases of these in the basement "just in case". Mostly because of the halal thing. I was not aware that there were US made Halal MREs and, thanks to you, We have a couple cases of those inbound. :)
@Unknown-ek1ox
@Unknown-ek1ox 18 күн бұрын
tbf it kinda makes sense given how likely these aren't just handed out during domestic disasters (I think/guess? IDK I'm not American) but how you can also use them in humanitarian aid abroad, some of that likely going on in regions where they have halal dietary needs. Then it's apparently the most easiest or compatible to use or hand out.

I’d boil the mains just so it’s better tasting, show initiative in improving the meals. I carried different spices and condiments in the field back in my 29th Division days. I loved those MCI days. I came in towards the end of MCIs and the transition to the early MREs. Pork patty was my favorite.

I don't know anything about these rations, but I would imagine they are intented to supplement whatever food, spices etc. might still be available. And while you can eat it the way it comes I imagine often you will be able to add some spices or whatever you still have to make it taste better.

The calories are based on the consumer's needs. US Military MRE for 1 meal is based on how many calories your average infantryman having to fight/work/whatever in full pack, weapon(s), ammo, body armor, etc needs to maintain their body weight. The humanitarian 24 hr meal assumes your typical civilian/refugee who isn't lugging around 100 pounds of weight with them. A technical rope technician friend, who's 6' tall and 170 pounds of amazon warrior woman body, consumes about 5000-5500 calories a day, and she's not only potentially lugging a hundred pounds of climbing gear and rope, she's also having to ascend/descend on those ropes from wind turbines, cliff faces, off the sides of buildings or under bridges.

Glad you noticed that the US tries to force P&J sandwiches (and breakfast pop-tarts???) on everyone, even shell-shocked Arabic refugees who have no idea what it is. I'm pretty certain the tortillas would be used with the main meals. On the other hand, they are a great source of protein and energy. Not so sure about the empty calories and sugar in the rest of the items though. I guess the drink powders rely on a source of safe fresh water, which may not always be available, or would need to be boiled first.
@40hup
@40hup 19 күн бұрын
Well, water would be the most important food of all, so water purification tablets would make a lot of sense in war or disaster zones. And basically there is no difference between civilian and military use of water - everyone needs it. "Empty calories" is a luxury when you are hungry or starving - the carbs get your blood sugar up quickly, and the cookies are whole grain/oatmeal, and the breakfast foods are high in fat for longer term satiety. To me this makes a lot of sense given the use case, and this is not meant to be your main source of food for a long time.

Bland taste and no meat means that it can be used and eaten by many different cultures and religions and shipped out quickly to where it's needed. Perhaps the lack of heater and other things is because in some places they can't read and understand what's printed on the packages.

I am fairly good at eating strange food, including the samples they served during bugfest in Raleigh. But I draw the line at eating food cold; I would sit and dutifully heat my food no matter the circumstances. I guess that’s why I never served in the military.
