+Stein nietS I am new to this type of music what makes it more like surbahar playing versus sitar-like playing?

+J Riette Sitar is the istrument people normaly associate Ust. Shahid Parvez Khan with. Sitar is a higher tuned smaller instrument and played mostly in a faster style. There's two types of classical music Khyal and Dhrupad. Khyal is a little lighter and faster moving (in a sense) Sitar is mostly used for this. Surbahar is used for Dhrupad an much older more meditative style of music. Somewhere in the comments is said the Surbahar here is played like Sitar. Which can also mean "playing stuff the instrument was not build for".. like some bassists play like a guitarist sometimes.. But it could also mean "its played with skill like he plays Sitar with skill".. that can be considered a complement.. Ustadji has clearly looked at Surbahar as beeing the Surbahar.. If you play Sitar you'll understand some things work very different then on Surbahar the Ustad in the video understood this very well. So to answer your question: Quality of knowing the instrument and its origin and respecting the tradition (Sitar came after Surbahar to make a music that became more adapt to amusing people at concerts worldwide, not saying if thats good or bad here). But if your new to this just listen whatever you resonate to. I just posted my comment because I love and greatly admire the effort put in to the music by the artist on reaching high levels on these different instruments in the different styles.

Possible I'm not an expert on the history (though I've heard Sitars used to be less small (compared to now a days))

I don't claim to be an expert by any means, but this didn't sound too different from an Alap that you would play on the Sitar.

I think this is a fairly restrained alap for an player in the Imdadkhani gharana. Compare to Imrat Khan. And it’s significantly slower and less flashy than Parvez’s sitar alaps.
