This takes me back, way back. If you look closely you can see that it is tail number 090 which I flew in a number of times, in other words the tail gunner in this B52 might be me. My crew was one of the first three B52 crews to land on and fly sorties from U-Tapao. The highest peak you see as it taxis out was called Mount Lam Lam and the story goes that the military found a cave with mortars lined up for the runway. Thankfully they found it before any were fired at us.

Because of my wonderful TDY time from October 5, 1972 - March5, 1973 at Utapao Royal Thai Naval Airfield, I am now retired and living in Chiang Mai, Thailand. I was just at Utapao airport.Last night, October 12, 2019; myAirAsia Utapao to Chiang Mai flight took off over the ocean just like the B-52s and KC-135s did going to bomb Vietnam during the December, 1972 bombing spree which ended the war. I will never forget Newland and later called Freeland, the every night Go Go bars town which was actually a 1/2 mile dirt road town about 10-15 miles from Utapao.

Lots of memories. I was there aug 68 to aug 69 in AE electronics squadron - Defensive Fire Control on the B-52 (technician). I went to Google Earth the other day to look at the area. It is all built up now - now called Utapao International Airport. We worked 12 hours a day four days - off two and a half days and then switched to 12 hour nights. This was a better schedule than stateside at Plattsburgh AFB with the G model B52s (there were no G's or H's in Thailand - at least while I was ther

These videos bring back such great memories. I was there from July 68 to July 69 and so proud of guarding those big boys at night as a SP Sentry Dog Handler. Saw so many of them taking off loaded with bombs and each time wondering where they were going to be dropping them. A few years ago I ran into a Marine Company at a hotel in Olive Branch,MS having a reunion so stopped in to thank them for their service. They had served in Viet Nam and told me the different places they had been then asked me if I had served in any branch of the service. I told them that I had been in the Air Force and am sure I didn’t have it anywhere as bad as they did and that I was stationed at U-Tapoa guarding B-52s as a dog handler. They shook my hand, thanking me, and told me I had no idea how many times those B-52s had came to their rescue, saving many of their lives. You have no idea how proud that made me feel and I hope it does all of you, as well, who played some part in getting them loaded and safely flying and completing their mission. Although I was proud of serving my country and being a part of establishing the sentry dog program there, I wondered for a long time if I had accomplished any good by being there. After meeting those Marines and hearing their stories, and them thanking me, I know we all made a difference in our own way. I truly am proud to have been there doing what I did even if it didn’t seem to be a glamorous job at the time. Thank each of you who served during that time and God Bless each of you!

I was there from 72 - 76, best assignment ever. I loved the place. I was in the middle of the Mayaguez Incident. Those were some hectic times but I wouldn’t trade the experience for anything in the world. I was in POL gassing those bombers and tankers. During Mayaguez you did what you had to do to survive. Once refueling efforts got under way we unloaded bodies off the choppers and 130’s. Something’s are hard to forget.

I was at U-Tapao from June 1969 to June 1970. I was a munitions specialist assigned to the 635th MMS. Worked in Bomb Assembly (BABS) the last six months I was there. A 250 acre bomb dump with primarily 500 and 750 lb. bombs. We lived in hootches at the north end of the base, near the open air beer bar. I know what monsoon season is…rain, rain and more rain. I was there on 20 July 1969 when the B-52 taking off to the north aborted the takeoff, caught fire and exploded. All crew got away from a/c, but a rescue chopper, HH-43 Pedro, was too close when the munitions exploded and crew of three died. I was 20 years old and that was 54 years ago! Time Flies!

Utapao 9/68 to 9/69 with 635th Trans Sq as Hvy Equipment Mechanic (472xx or 471xx, can't remember which as it was long time ago) . Most of the time I did mobile maintenance on the RT forklifts in the munitions storage area. I was coming out of there with my two Thai mechanics in the maintenance truck and was just going thru the front gate and saw the smoke rising on the end of the runway and Pedro circling. Realized it was burning aircraft and then there was huge fireball and the Pedro disappeared. About that time the SPs turned us all around and we went thru the back gate, down the beach by the outdoor theater. I'll never forget that one.

I worked mid shift air base defense and we had a new A1C ride the free shuttle for hours after a shift. The Thai bus driver finally got someone to get him off, and I never saw him again. I also remember the bus drivers stopping the bus and getting out to pick up rice bugs if they were in the middle of the road.

@@Taoseno2007 They were big ass bugs, rice bugs is what I was always told. Mangudai they were called. The Thais used them in their cooking somehow. They used to say they ate them by biting the heads off and sucking out the guts, but the only one I ever saw doing that was an American GI. If you were riding in a jeep with the windshield down and one hit you it supposedly hurt pretty good, never happened to me though. I worked with the Thai guards on the perimeter and they would collect them. And I've been on the bus when the driver actually got out picked one up and threw it in a bucket he was collecting them in. How they used them I don't know. I also worked with a guy from Louisiana who said they had them there as well but not as big. Some of the ones I saw were 3 to 4 inches long I believe, but it's been a long time.

I totally forgot about the on base shuttle bus. There may have been an on base baht bus and I just don't remember..My memory cells must be shot, lol., because me and another airman, would go down to the beach, have a bottle of Mateus, fig newtons, and rent a sail boat. The buffs and tankers coming overhead were awesome. Anyone remember hearing of a little animal call a "F--k you lizard"?, lol. It was said by other g.i.s, to us newcomers, that such a little animal existed, lol lol. That may be on parity with the Marines telling recruits and newbees to go find a "jack-a-lope, " lol. I was there as well. What a f’n wake-up call that was. Remember the big fight between the Marine commander and the wing king? That was some stuff. After working 12-16 hour shifts we’d go to Pattaya and beat the jarheads ass. Still a hell raiser and will be that way forever. Whatever happened to the Bronze stars we were supposed to get? F’it, those days are gone.

G's weren`t based at U-Tapao. They were all at Andersen and I think just in 1972/73. A few of them may have landed at U-Tapao during Linebacker II after being damaged by SAM`s. H's weren`t used in Vietnam, they were all kept in the U.S. on nuclear alert.

In 1972 G's would sometimes fly their mission from Anderson and then land at U-Tapao. Crew would get their crew rest and then fly a mission from U-Tapao and return to Anderson. All depended on the target, follow-on's, etc. This happened more often during the Easter Offensive in 1972. My husband was a Crew Chief of 56-672 at UT on Team 15 in 1971-1972.

I was B52 ground crew/crew chief at Utapao in the 2nd half of 67. But, I don't remember any of us being allowed to be shirtless on the flight line. I know I always had my fatigue shirt on. Maybe it changed later on after I left in mid December 67.
