About Paryaya
Udupi Paryaya is a unique tradition observed in the town of Udupi in Karnataka, India. The term "Paryaya" translates to "turn" or "rotation" in Sanskrit. The significance lies in the rotation of the responsibility of managing the renowned Udupi Krishna Matha among eight different monastic heads, known as "Swamijis," every two years.
This ritualistic transfer of authority ensures a fair distribution of duties and maintains harmony among the eight mathas associated with the Udupi Krishna Matha. The tradition dates back to the 13th century when the saint Madhvacharya established the matha. Each Swamiji oversees the administration, rituals, and afairs of the temple during their assigned period, adding a sense of continuity to the religious practices.
The Paryaya ceremony is a grand event, attracting devotees and tourists alike. The outgoing Swamiji hands over a set of keys symbolizing authority to the incoming Swamiji in a ceremony witnessed by thousands. This centuries-old tradition not only showcases the unique governance system of Udupi Krishna Matha but also fosters a sense of unity and shared responsibility among the eight mathas, contributing to the cultural and spiritual richness of the region.
