This was at Slane Castle Ireland. There was just a special electricity in the air that night that I had never felt before or after at any concert I have been to. On the day Ireland played Holland in a soccer match which they won to qualify for the World Cup, it was shown on the big screens putting everyone in party mood. In contrast, Bonos father had just passed away, maybe the funeral was the same day as the show which just added an emotional weight to his performance.

They filmed two shows. The first was the day after burying Bono’s father. The second one was after the soccer match. Most likely what made it to the dvd was from the second show. Coincidentally that was just ten days before 9/11 when that album and tour brought new meaning to the US.

I can’t even imagine seeing U2 live never mind in ireland or after such a huge moment in Bono’s life. The closest i can even hope to approach is such a step down that saying it will sound terrible. But i saw Weird Al on the poodle hat tour shortly after his parents both died. he gave so much energy to his performance and during one song was less than six feet away from me, as he sang it in the audience. Nowhere near on the same level since he doesn’t write or perform from a place of emotion like U2 does but it’s a story i will always have and wanted to share now for some reason.

His dad has passed shortly before this show. That sound at about the 08:34 mark makes a lot of sense when you've lost a father. I lost mine on Feb 7 2019, and this chokes me up every time I hear Bono's lamentation. It's like a little bit of his soul is escaping his body, and I know that feeling.

One interesting note about the rhythm section: before they signed their first record deal, the record company told them that they can have a their mega contract, the only stipulation was that they had to fire Larry Mullen (drums) and being in one of the record companies choice. Bono, The Edge and Adam Clayton told them to go pound sand and shove up their......Loyalty, pass it on!!!!

This is a perfect example of what their ENTIRE SHOW IS LIKE!!! Their concerts are seriously almost like a religious experience. Bono’s voice has never been better. I actually think his voice has gotten better since the early 2000’s. They spend so much time writing and in the studio but also spend just as much time perfecting their live performances. They simply are the best. I’ve watched this easily over 100x and I still get chills.

That's the thing about The Edge. Is he one of the GREATEST ever? Not technically. But he IS great at writing songs. That's something to keep in mind when rating him - he plays what he needs to get the song written, and he's got a pretty good resume there.

Those U2 concerts on the Elevation tour were their best! the two live recordings have different transitions to Where The Streets Have no Name... This was AMAZING, but the Bad-Where The Streets Have No Name transition in Live in Boston is one of the most perfect song transitions EVER. Some suggestions of odd-ball great U2 songs apart from the 80s classics (with my fav performances: - Please - You'll enjoy the rhythm section on this (studio, or live at the VMA) - Moment of Surrender - Bass line shines... (studio or Live At Glastonbury) - Gone - (studio - Damn, I just love the "POP' album... the sound is amazing - or Live in Boston) - Zooropa - Live in Mexico

Great Review 👌Elevation Tour 2001 Slane Castle. One of their best ever concerts. Not sure if someone has mentioned this in the comments but this gig was on the same day as Bono’s dad’s funeral. He burried his dad on the morning and the gig was the evening. One of their most emotional passionate gigs. If you hear during the transition Bono is shouting hear my soul father . Very emotional. No band better to push emotion then u2. The crowd is also insane. Ireland had qualified for the soccer World Cup that day and between support acts they showed the game on the screens. They qualified and was probably U2’s greatest support band 😃try October/Bullet the Blue Sky live from Paris 2015 innocence and experience tour

THANK YOU DAVID for saying what you did about Adam Clayton and Larry Mullins Jr, the MOST UNDERRATED IN music! And to think ONLY Adam had any real musical knowledge when they started the band and Larry was only a high school band drummer when they formed. Edge's brother was their second guitar player before he bailed on them, and Bono has NO real clue how to sing, Edge (Also a Dave/David) was the only other one in that band who really "knew" something about music lol

U2 on home soil. Slane Castle Co Meath Ireland 2001, a place where they recorded the bulk of the 1984 album The Unforgettable fire. 80,000 plus in attendance. This is actually the second of two shows at the venue, a week after the first. Slane, a venue which usually is allowed one show per year. U2 sold out the first in a matter of minutes so the Irish Premier/Taoisheach intervened to get a second show on the go. U2 had previously been a support act there in 1981.

A couple things I know about the rhythm section: Larry Mullen Jr started the band, of course as they like to say, as soon as Bono opened his mouth he became the band leader. Larry is known to have a preternatural sense of rhythm. In one studio session for No Line on the Horizon, he pointed out the producer that a beat was off by a fraction of a second. The producer protested, but of course, Larry was correct once they fixed it. Adam, god bless him, has often been known to be the wild card of the group. He missed a performance on the ZooTV tour due to his alcohol addiction, which he then almost immediately kicked, vowing to never miss a show again. Also, I believe the Edge is known to have written many of Adam's bass parts as Adam is probably the least musician of the group, relatively speaking.

Their tightness is fact. You're right, they are not about being flashy players, they are a true band, and do what's needed for each song and it all locks together without any individual ego (You could argue maybe it is in Bono's case, but he is the front man, it's a necessity to hold a crowd) . Confidence for some folks could seen as arrogance, I guess, but I think he knows who he is and doesn't have anything to prove anymore, U2's place in musical history is assured.

I also have an obsession with pipe organs 🤷‍♂️ That's one of the first songs I learned on my first guitar, a hideous red Memphis using a very user-unfriendly zoom505 multi effects pedal for the delay playing through a Fender J.A.M. amp. I spent countless hours in my room with that thing and later an Ibanez RG that I still have, learning every post Syd Barrett Pink Floyd song by ear. David Gilmour was the sole reason I ever learned to play music and I couldn't afford a real strat. And at some point in the 90s I got into Korn and Primus and heavier stuff and went to Sam Ash and bought a DeArmond Pilot 5 string bass that I also still have and the rest is history. I wish I'd kept up on guitar. I shocked the hell out of some friends and myself at a party about 5 years ago when I asked a friend if I could play his American strat that I was eyeballing the whole night like the hottest chick I ever saw and it wasn't perfect but it was kind of like riding a bike. I still got some blues left in me. ...I kinda went totally off the rails here on this U2 comment LOL but what the hell, that's what hearing that stuff brings me back to. Great review btw

@@brucenadeau5920 lol Henry is hilarious and extremely opinionated. I still like the guy. U2 was never my favorite band but they do have some really good songs and The Edge is just awesome.

@@JAYZIGGY5 my all time favorite album and an OFTEN go to when I am in a bad mood, it never fails to get me to another place. Joshua Tree and Auctung contain most of my favorite songs though I LOVE ALL their albums until we hit the 2000's, then hit n miss for me to be honest. They tried something new, some worked imo, some was crap, BUT most bands face that eventually that long into a career.

It’s weird. I don’t hate U2. I actually like several of their songs. But I don’t own anything from them

hey now. i say "hey now" knowing full well that i got it from howard stern who loved the phrase so much from the larry sanders show that he just couldn't help but start using it, he said where he got it from, i say where i got it from...now i haven't read or watched anything yet from you, but i clicked on this because i saw the phrase Feelin you. that is Vick the Brick as far as i know, maybe you divulge where you got it from and i'll be curious to find out...but, feelin you is already taken and without proper due which i hope to find some trace of, your just steeling

It's trendy to knock U2 just as people knock Coldplay or any successful band. But I can think of only a handful of bands with as many great songs, and around 20 bands with more annoying frontmen.
