This was at Slane Castle Ireland. There was just a special electricity in the air that night that I had never felt before or after at any concert I have been to. On the day Ireland played Holland in a soccer match which they won to qualify for the World Cup, it was shown on the big screens putting everyone in party mood. In contrast, Bonos father had just passed away, maybe the funeral was the same day as the show which just added an emotional weight to his performance.
@shawnguillory2673 жыл бұрын
They filmed two shows. The first was the day after burying Bono’s father. The second one was after the soccer match. Most likely what made it to the dvd was from the second show. Coincidentally that was just ten days before 9/11 when that album and tour brought new meaning to the US.

I can’t even imagine seeing U2 live never mind in ireland or after such a huge moment in Bono’s life. The closest i can even hope to approach is such a step down that saying it will sound terrible. But i saw Weird Al on the poodle hat tour shortly after his parents both died. he gave so much energy to his performance and during one song was less than six feet away from me, as he sang it in the audience. Nowhere near on the same level since he doesn’t write or perform from a place of emotion like U2 does but it’s a story i will always have and wanted to share now for some reason.

This is a perfect example of what their ENTIRE SHOW IS LIKE!!! Their concerts are seriously almost like a religious experience. Bono’s voice has never been better. I actually think his voice has gotten better since the early 2000’s. They spend so much time writing and in the studio but also spend just as much time perfecting their live performances. They simply are the best. I’ve watched this easily over 100x and I still get chills.

Very emotional.No band better to push emotion then u2. The crowd is also insane. Ireland had qualified for the soccer World Cup that day and between support acts they showed the game on the screens. A couple things I know about the rhythm section: Larry Mullen Jr started the band, of course as they like to say, as soon as Bono opened his mouth he became the band leader. Larry is known to have a preternatural sense of rhythm. In one studio session for No Line on the Horizon, he pointed out the producer that a beat was off by a fraction of a second. The producer protested, but of course, Larry was correct once they fixed it. Adam, god bless him, has often been known to be the wild card of the group. He missed a performance on the ZooTV tour due to his alcohol addiction, which he then almost immediately kicked, vowing to never miss a show again. Also, I believe the Edge is known to have written many of Adam's bass parts as Adam is probably the least musician of the group, relatively speaking.
@MrDiddyDee3 жыл бұрын
Their tightness is fact. You're right, they are not about being flashy players, they are a true band, and do what's needed for each song and it all locks together without any individual ego (You could argue maybe it is in Bono's case, but he is the front man, it's a necessity to hold a crowd) . Confidence for some folks could seen as arrogance, I guess, but I think he knows who he is and doesn't have anything to prove anymore, U2's place in musical history is assured.

Hah don't ask Henry Rollins about Adam's bass lines lol. He's not a fan. Larry is always solid but I've always thought man he and the drummers from The Cure must get bored out of their mind. It's so repetitive. I love most of U2's stuff up until and including Rattle and Hum. They lost me after that. Where The Streets has one of the best intros ever. I still get goose bumps every time I hear it. I also have an obsession with pipe organs 🤷♂️ That's one of the first songs I learned on my first guitar, a hideous red Memphis using a very user-unfriendly zoom505 multi effects pedal for the delay playing through a Fender J.A.M. amp. I spent countless hours in my room with that thing and later an Ibanez RG that I still have, learning every post Syd Barrett Pink Floyd song by ear. David Gilmour was the sole reason I ever learned to play music and I couldn't afford a real strat. And at some point in the 90s I got into Korn and Primus and heavier stuff and went to Sam Ash and bought a DeArmond Pilot 5 string bass that I also still have and the rest is history. I wish I'd kept up on guitar. I shocked the hell out of some friends and myself at a party about 5 years ago when I asked a friend if I could play his American strat that I was eyeballing the whole night like the hottest chick I ever saw and it wasn't perfect but it was kind of like riding a bike. It's trendy to knock U2 just as people knock Coldplay or any successful band. But I can think of only a handful of bands with as many great songs, and around 20 bands with more annoying frontmen.
