You had it nailed. They had stopped playing it for a few years. This was the Joshua Tree anniversary tour. They started every concert with Larry Mullin Jr. Walking out alone and starting the song as each member joined separately. This particular show is in Dublin obviously from the title so the crowd reaction was amazing. Though the same tour the Boston crowd was also really hyped. Unfortunately as hard as I looked this was the best sound quality version I could find. Unfortunately none of them had good crowd angles. I thoroughly enjoyed the reaction and you nailed my reason for why I requested it!!

Thanks. I love this performance as well. But I prefer this multicamera edit. The sound is better too. The first six songs and more are great. I hope the link works. Cheers! kzbin.info/www/bejne/anKygqyphrB4bqM

I actually got to see them on this tour two days after Chris Cornell died. They played Black Hole Sun just before the song that played at the beginning here & man it was emotional. The whole stadium was singing, truly beautiful.

cheers David i attended this concert and had a great view of the band and have never missed U2 concert in Dublin since 1987

That song at the opening was "The Whole of the Moon" by The Waterboys. It will absolutely get stuck in your head. U2 makes very conscious choices about the song playing when they come out. I have a clear memory of Bowie's Space Oddity at the start of their shows in the 2000's
@sueostrowski1792 жыл бұрын
The crowd was just as crazy in Boston when I saw them in 1987 on the Joshua Tree Tour. Bono had his arm in a sling. The crowd was singing Beatles songs full blast before they came on stage. U2 started playing with the Beatles recording when they came on stage.

I was there 👌 amazing gig. Started with Sunday Bloody Sunday , New Year’s Day , bad , pride , where the streets have no name , still haven’t found what I’m looking for , with or without you , bullet the blue sky. Who can possibly top that 😂😂 Must admit though when I saw that you was doing a review of Sunday Bloody Sunday live from Dublin I thought it was the official slane castle show recorded in 2001. Elevation tour. Trust me that version pisses all over this version from 2017 . The crowd are wild . 100 times better then that crowd I was in . Great review Noel Gallagher from oasis supported this tour 👍

On the same tour, I believe, they played Blackhole sun before they came out, since Chris Cornell has passed away and the crowd belted that one out in unison as well -- a nice was to pay respects.

U2 fans love a wide variety of music; they love music, they love to sing, seen them in many countries and the crowds have been unlike any others at Rock and Roll gigs. 'Live is where we live.' to quote Bono.
@kathleenandbruce2 жыл бұрын
Boy the people of Dublin sure love them and your right they're louder than Bono sometimes. Like you not a big U2 fan but that crowd is amazing and they definitely responded to them. This song is tolerable to me but they sure love it there. Was worth watching just to see the crowd.

This is interesting, being an audience camera angle. I mean, its not a good angle for the band--there are way better camera angles prob than this. And audio not good either. But it does give the feeling of being in the audience, which is what captured your attention.

On this Joshua Tree Anniversary stadium tour they started on that b-stage in the middle of the crowd (in the shape of the tree if seen from above) with songs older than that album - and with no lights or production effects too. Made the impact when the full performance of the album started with Where The Streets Have No Name while the HD LED screen (the whole brown back here!) lit up bright immensely impactfull!

"Exit" is the song they stopped playing live. The actress Rebecca Schaeffer was murdered and the murderer said he played the song over and over before murdering her. Listen to the song on The Joshua Tree, then watch the performance of the song on "Rattle and Hum."

U2 is an Irish band, from the republic of Ireland, as everybody knows. But one of the topics they often sang about is The Northern Ireland conflict - the dumbest and most unnecessary thing in Europe. How long, how long must we sing this song?
@stevesmith4600 Жыл бұрын
The song I clearly a song about war (it's from their album: War). The put the breaks on doing it live, as it's emotional take on troubles in Ireland, and they started feeling like people were wanting to hear it as a classic song and not really connecting to its emotional meaning. From time to time, they've put it back on for live performances if/when something from a world events perspective occurs and links back to the intent of the song. I think they'd rather not play the song, not because they dislike it, but because it means that something messed up is going on.
@citycobra50142 жыл бұрын
From U2 i like mostly the older (The Joshua Tree; great Album) and way older Songs like "Pride" (aka in the name of love), "New Years Day", "Gloria" and of course this one: "Sunday Bloody Sunday". i could here before you stopped that after this song "new years day" is the next one, i should look this live perfomance up. Thanks David for bringing this live perfomance to my attention!
@FredericoRoberto2 жыл бұрын
I saw this concert live! :) They didn't play it live from 88 to 97 (when they soft-brought it back). They just wanted to let go of the very 'Christian rebel activist' vibe they were known for. And that's exactly what happened with the cynical Zoo TV tour era. If you want to check SBS live, check the early days, 83-85 for raw energy.

One of the first songs I learned to play on guitar and one of the easiest solo's BUT a kick ass solo imo, simple and sweet.

Hi David! I have just found your channel, seen some of your videos, and I think your reactions, reviews, etc..are really good, very objective. Probably songs " Maldito duende" or "entre dos tierras". It doesnt matter if the videoclip or any live version of them. You wont be dissappointed. I PROMISE!!! Thanks in advance!!!

not to take anything away, but isn't sound quality/mix on most amateur vids inconsistent? Plus, that the crowd is so loud and engaged IS a testament to U2 for putting in the work over the years.

Every gig I’ve ever been to the crowd sings the songs playing before the band comes out lol.. maybe it’s a UK thing 🤷♂️ Btw a better performance of this song is in the Rattle & Hum film - worth a watch for comparison. Was recorded on the day of a bombing in a town in Ireland so was a highly charged emotional performance. This was the thing you were referring to when you said they didn’t want to play it again for a number of years after that performance as they didn’t think they could do it justice after that one. Here’s a link if you want to have a look: kzbin.info/www/bejne/l5m5hnWid8-JrJY

Well, welcome to Ireland DH. I am not that surprised to be honest. It is in Dublin, half of the actual band is from Dublin. This means, as I came here to stay longer then "only for holidays", I realised, that they even sing a long to songs they love (for all U2) when they "only" do their groceries. I am not kidding. One of the reasons, why I love Irish. But might be, that they are in the South of Ireland (County Cork and Cork City) different. Still, it happened again and again as I was in supermarkets and someone would at least whistle do it. Further than that, I agree completely, they are an amazing crowed to have and they are proud about this Irish band, that is for sure and why not? U2 is anything else but a bad band. 😉 Was just finishing one of my jobs, loaded it up and in came that reaction, so I could not resist. Thanks for it David and have a nice weekend. ❤️

Thanks for the reaction! However, I don't think you're correct about them eliminating the song from their live performances. This song has always been a staple of their live reportoir and a crowd favorite. I can't think of a concert where it was not played.

Most of the Zoo TV shows don't include the song. Early in Zoo TV they omitted any songs from the first 3 albums from the set.

yip they did stop playing it. they did not feel it was appropriate after the version in Rattle and Hum... it took them to later in POP tour to bring it back in the set as a stripped down version with the Edge
