Lyrics:
In the howlin' wind
Comes a stingin' rain
See it drivin' nails
Into the souls on the tree of pain.
From the firefly
A red orange glow
See the face of fear
Runnin' scared in the valley below.
Bullet the blue sky
Bullet the blue sky
Bullet the blue
Bullet the blue.
In the locust wind
Comes a rattle and hum.
Jacob wrestled the angel
And the angel was overcome.
You plant a demon seed
You raise a flower of fire.
We see them burnin' crosses
See the flames, higher and higher.
Woh, woh, bullet the blue sky
Bullet the blue sky
Bullet the blue
Bullet the blue.
Suit and tie comes up to me
His face red like a rose on a thorn bush
Like all the colours of a royal flush
And he's peelin' off those dollar bills
(Slappin' 'em down)
One hundred, two hundred.
And I can see those fighter planes
And I can see those fighter planes
Across the tin huts as children sleep
Through the alleys of a quiet city street.
Up the staircase to the first floor
We turn the key and slowly unlock the door
As a man breathes into his saxophone
And through the walls you hear the city groan.
Outside, is America
Outside, is America
America.
See across the field
See the sky ripped open
See the rain comin' through the gapin' wound
Howlin' the women and children
Who run into the arms
Of America.

One of the most important bass riffs in rock history. Simple yet definitive. Hope Adam Clayton knows that. Also knocks my socks off how the Edge managed to make a guitar sound like a full on air raid. I think it’d be too cool to hear a RATM cover of this.

Everything in this song is TIGHT AF: Guitar-wise, you have The Edge proving he's a tone monster, AND that he CAN pull off a solo if he wants to. The bass and the drums are simple, yet effective. Adam Clayton is one hell of a bass player, he sticks to simple stuff so that Edge can rip it on guitar and still have a solid base. Larry's drums are tight all the way, and the breakdowns are solid AF. Then there's Bono, think what you want of him, but he's a great singer and that's just the way it is. Of course, he has a little trouble hitting those high notes but he manages to come through, proving he's still got it... U2 at their finest lml

What are you smoking. What does 'big' in this context mean? U2 are not, and never will be on a par with the Beatles, certainly not in terms of song quality and never in terms of ability. U2 have written maybe three good songs, the rest are album fillers: the Beatles wrote so many good songs it's impossible to name many bad ones.

Andy Webster can we stop with this my band is greater than your band nonsense. U2 have definitely got more than 3 good songs. There are musicians who play beautifully and well. And then you get musicians who are...artists. U2 has been like this since their first album. I'm glad to see that they still have enough compassion to get pissed off at man's inhumanity to man. And Bono has every right to express his opinion about "the orange one". Just as I have to understand that there is half a country that likes Trump, Trump supporters have to understand that it's okay to not like their guy.

Since the year this came out, there have been places and people and dictators that this song could have been written for. For me, what ties it to today is that image of the mom and kid running from the rear gas at the border. I swear, all I could hear was Bono singing 'Drowning the women and children who run into the arms of America'.

It isn't as strong or clear as it was 30 years ago, sure. But for his lack of vocal range or colour or power he adds other intonations to keep the song fresh. He will never sound like 1987 again, and if he did, people would complain about how boring U2 are only ever singing the same stuff over and over.

Holy crap. This was incredible. How have I never seen this before?? This track highlights one of my biggest pet peeves with how this band is viewed.. Adam and Larry almost seem to be an afterthought in terms of public perception. To an extent I get why that is. Bono and Edge are overwhelmingly considered the face of the band bc of how polarizing they both are in different ways, their names, and because they have such an instantly recognizable iconic appearance. But to me Adam and Larry played just as much of a roll, not only in what they’ve been able to accomplish as a band commercially, but also with their pioneering sound. Especially in the early 80s up until this album was created. For whatever reason over the years they going going to take sort of a backseat. But in early days songs like Sunday Bloody Sunday, Bad, and Bullet the Blue Sky are all drum/bass dominated tracks. Which was hella rare for that era of music.

That was good, but if you can believe, I saw them in Perth Aus the other night, and this - in a deluge of all their very best songs - was even more massive. Louder, darker, even more angry. Bono changes the lyrics all the time, but Edge absolutely crushed it the other night. I've loved this tune every since it grabbed me by the throat on Rattle and Hum - which was a definitive performance. I'm not keen on their new music, but with the Joshua tre tour, they showed they can still weave all the magic of their classic material.A mate of mine met them backstage. I now officially hate him.

@@deirdrekiely6187 There were no songs after that, only bland tripe. In fact put it at 1991. Pre-1992 we had Boy, October, War, Unforgettable Fire, Joshua Tree, Achtung Baby. That was the end of U2's catalogue. I omitted Rattle & Hum which was horrible. I include though Zooropa the title track, an accidental piece from a sound check. Everything else a global embarrassment. The pre-1992 work was good, but after that they became politicians working for the global eugenics agenda, getting paid $$$megabucks for mass manipulation. That's why you seen them photoshooting with the top criminals on the planet like the Pope, Bill Gates, and the Clintons.
