One of favorite 90's songs! I checked into it, and it turns out it is about a war in El Salvador. I always thought it was about the War that takes place in our streets. It is hectic and chaotic, much like the times we are in today. Hope you all like it!

its a good thing some of us can enjoy music while dismissing the cynical message within the lyrics. while many in europe were whining about american policy actions of the cold war they did not seem to mind our saber rattling on their behalf which stopped soviet tanks from going further west than czechoslovakia. they thanked us for winning the cold war but bash us for what we did to win it. think our involvement in south america was wrong? look at chile in the early 70s as a case study on the tragedy of allowing communism to take hold. allende was a soviet puppet who won the election on the muscle of thugs sent in from east germany and cuba, then he nationalized-commie speak for stole-businesses from local families as well as foreign investors. their economy was quickly destroyed, people left starving. so its maddeningly ironic that U2 now lives in mansions while they spent years kicking in the teeth of the country who guaranteed their safety and prosperity. i spent four years of my life busting my ass on an aircraft carrier wrenching all night on fighter jets that intercepted soviet nuclear bombers in the early 80s and knew what the stakes were at the time even if some forget them now. so U2 thanks for the music I can tap my foot to but the message sucks.

Agreed 100%!! Fucking love the song but the messaging against US Cold War policy I disagree with. The arms build up and Sabre rattling went a long way to making sure a direct war between the Soviets and America never happened. And it didn’t. God only knows how bad that would have been.

This song rips off Led Zeppelin's "When the Levee Breaks". I mean come on listen to the intro of both songs and how can you honestly say that this isn't pure and simple plagiarism. Keep in mind that the riffs don't have to be exactly the same to rip off another song....but it is certainly close enough. Hard to believe the boys in U2 never heard Led Zeppelin and that song didn't influence this song.
@paultozier662610 жыл бұрын
That's BULLSHIT man, really. The ONLY song that rips When the Levee Breaks is "Rhythmin and Stealin" by Beastie Boys. U2 doesn't need to copy anyone. Clean your ears out, and go away.
