I was right in the middle of that ecstatic steaming mess of a crowd, just a sea of bodies that surged and back and forth to this music that meant everything. Don’t think my feet touched the ground for much of I Will Follow. I was 16 and this was my fist U2 gig, but this band had changed my world since Boy came out when I was 11. They were from my hometown, and they were finally home. This day was a spectacular joy.

I was at that gig with my sister. I worked right next to Croke Park and we had a bird's eye view of the rehearsals that took place in the days beforehand. REM was the supporting act. Looking back at the greatness we witnessed almost 40 years later, it still takes my breath away. I saw U2 with my husband in Madison Square Garden in 2015, and it was truly magical. Man, can they put on a show!

I was there too - REM was the 2nd opening act (after some local Dublin band) and REM was followed by the Alarm, the n Squeeze, then of course U2. I will follow was not the opener either - it was ‘11 O’clock Tick Tock’ - was an amazing day

This was my second gig after the War tour (Belfast Maysfield Leisure centre gig). It was mind-blowing. Electric. You could feel the raw emotion in the air, just look at that crowd. In the days before health and safety ruined the atmosphere at stadium gigs. Packed in, sweaty happy bodies singing as one. It was immense. We will never forget that morning, sitting outside Croke Park on Jones Road listening to the early morning soundchecks when the gates opened and a small open top car came out with the fab 4 in it. They waved at us and said hello. Nearly fell in the canal! :-)

@@stephent9677 Well, Squeeze were an excellent support band for sure, and I love their songs. Every song they played, we knew and sang along with. They are a great band who left a great legacy... but there's no doubt who the stars of the show were that night.
@tedfreeman2709 Жыл бұрын
@@johnc3403 I think it's about anthemic staggering melodies for me with U2. Squeeze is ...nice! Always loved the guys and though they didn't turn out to be the "next Beatles" of songwriting, sure they are appreciated. But U2 - transcendent with this song, Electric Co, Wild Horses, Beautiful Day, God's Country, Gloria, even the more quiet songs pulse with another wild creative energy than almost any peers, certainly nothing close to the familiar lovable pub rock of a Squeeze, Rockpile, Tom Petty. None bad, but U2 vastly different level, different realm. I'd give an REM an approach to that "other realm" than normal bands too... loved the Alarm back in the day but they were also ran to U2 though beloved.

I remember this like it was yesterday. I only lived a couple of miles from the stadium in Marino and could have listened to it from my garden.
