10:07 Adam Clayton playing the lines live. Fun fact - this show was a global pay per view event and was the second show in the row they did in Sydney. The previous concert became known as the infamous StuTV show where Adam missed his one and only gig with the band. He had broken up with his girlfriend (supermodel Naomi Campbell) and went on an ungodly bender. They found him passed out somewhere and too wasted to play so his bass tech Stuart stepped in and did the show. There was some switcheroo stuff with the final tape footage I think to get him in. If you ever watch the full recording of this concert, poor Adam is pale white; he's clearly hung over af and at one time Bono even comes over to playfully wipe his brow with a handkerchief as Adam is clearly sweating bullets. The guy soldiered through it though and turned himself around after this tour but this is likely why there isn't an exceptional amount of Adam close-ups in the show, he was looking like death warmed-over. I always liked this song. It was such an unusual choice to end the ZooTV shows on such a sombre note, but in truth, it made sense. The entire production was about sensory overload but by this time, everyone was kind of spent. Had you watched Can't Help Falling in Love outro, you would have marveled at his falsetto approach - that he could hit those notes after blasting his voice for 2 hours was remarkable; this concert really captured Bono in his vocal prime. Oh, and as for the devil makeup - let's just say Bono was heavily inspired by CS Lewis's Screwtape Letters novel. Look into that and you'll get an idea of what he was playing at, especially when leaning into songs like the Fly. Cheers o7

Saw this live in the UK 1993 definitely Adam Clayton. There was a couple of shots of Adam Clayton and a close up of his bass and fingers. The night before his bass tech filled in for him as he was still drunk from the night before. Bono was in his alter ego for this tour McPhisto

Thanks Dave, I enjoyed the reaction! I know ballads are not your thing ... that's why I thought best to give you a ripcord to bail if it just didn't hit for you. I typically try to avoid ballads, but I cannot honestly say that this is the last ballad I will be requesting. While the video didn't show Adam on the bass, it was Adam playing. There were a very few seconds during Edge's second solo, it was a zoomed in shot on the bass playing the bass line. There is a story behind why Bono is in so much make-up. He's playing an alter-ego MacPhisto. I'll queue up a video at some point where he gets into costume during a song. Regarding the lady that came up on stage, U2's security finds someone from the crowd to allow on stage for the slow dance section. (Whether security picks them in the moment, or it is pre-planned selected, it is known that it will happen ahead of time). Bono's first concert he ever attended was The Clash, and he was inspired how they broke down the fourth wall between the band and the crowd.

Are you requesting more U2? Always await his U2 reactions. Maybe more of their heavy hitting rock songs?
@stevesmith4600
@stevesmith4600 23 күн бұрын
@@goldenhourkodak Yeah, this was my request. I already have a laundry list of songs I want to get into David's queue. Hopefully my prioritized requests will be a long running thing. I have at least 2 other songs already queue up for the next two months. But, like I said, I can't promise that this will be the last ballad requested. I know slower slows are not always his thing. unfortunately, I find his reactions to be fair, super entertaining, and interesting, so ... I am sometimes curious to see his perspective on certain songs, even if they slow. That being said, I do like U2's more rock songs as well, so it's going to be a variety.

The original studio guitar solo especially the first part is one of my favorites of all time, just guttural. Bass is on a hard tremolo playing whole notes, you can hear the decay of the note.

That is definitely Adam playing bass and there was one closeup of the guitar. But, the reason he isn't featured is because this Zoo TV footage was combination of a two performance and this footage is from the first night that Adam missed due to intoxication/sickness. His bass tech, Stuart Morgan, filled in and all the pre-planned camera shots were switched to the drummer.

I saw U2 on this Zoo tv tour, in the UK, they played to 82,000 people it really was an amazing spectacle, this song was right towards the end, kind of winding down... still probably the best concert I ever saw. No Adam Clayton on bass was definitely playing on this for sure. Yeah Bono would come out towards the end, dressed as the devil McPhisto... he would always make a live phone call to whoever....ie try to book a taxi lol.... they would always end up hanging up on him..... no idea they were on speaker to 82,000 people lol

It’s the bass player playing with tremolo and a light distortion to bring it more into the midrange.

Cool review Dave, totally understand where you're coming from. I have personally always loved the bassline on this tune too, it's much heavier in the album version though. Edge wrote an emotional guitar line for this tune because it was inspired by his divorce at the time they made the Achtung Baby record in 1991. Two things: 1. Adam definitely played bass on this live 2. Bono wore makeup in the 3rd act on ZooTV tour as the 'Mr MacPhisto' character, a kind of parody of Satan who comes to Earth to teach everyone how to get along again As far as the lyrical content, Bono explained it like this, crossing images of terrorism with broken love: "The song has images of terrorism, bomb-building, clockworks and cold steel, parked car. In a personal sense, I have observed the phenomenon of a person planting a kind of landmine that years later they will accidentally tread on and blow their lives to pieces. You can watch people doing it, wilfully getting involved in actions they will pay a very heavy price for later. Trajectory is everything."

Respect your review. It was the closer for Achtung Baby album and the tour, should've kept going and heard "I can't help falling in love" what an outro.

@fredvelez7703 He may have let me slide, but in general, I try to stay away from requesting two songs with one request. I really enjoy their cover of Elvis's "I Can't Help Falling In Love". Bono's falsetto is amazing. Also, I knew that ballads are not his thing, so requesting a two-for-one with two back-to-back slow songs ... I would have felt dirty doing it. The reason I linked the combo video rather than the stand-alone "Love is Blindness (Live from Sydney)" was because I felt the video quality was slightly better.

She’s *not a plant.* Bringing a woman up from the crowd onto the stage at that point in this song was planned, yes. But the person is always a legit fan chosen by security from the front couple rows during the concert. All ZooTV tour. So Bono knew it would happen, but not WHO it would be.

I’ve been listening to this song for years, as in the studio version. U2 decided to record something on the darker side, and in my opinion it works. A big-time rarity for them. Probably always gonna be. But they did it well when they made the effort. I’ve long tended to go for darker, more minor-key songs. But for bands like U2 I don’t really expect that kind of thing. As far as those lunatics who commit terrible, violent acts. The people who investigate and study those crimes have their views. Mainly, that such individuals are extremely disgruntled monsters who want to take revenge on the society they believe has screwed them. But they’re not so much victims as absolute criminals, who have no legit reason for the horrors they commit. Thankfully, the girl was not that kind of person. And she had to be in total awe. But I also have to say that Bono wasn’t unlucky to dance with her.

Bono uses to bring people (when he was younger usually good-looking girls) to the stage in one song of the show, it's planned, but not the concrete person, they take one from the front rows.

On the female audience member coming on stage. This, and most U2 tours are a fairly rigid setlist. There are variations, but the variations come at a specific time and place in the set. They are NOT a jam band, or a band that shakes up the setlist radically from night to night. At this point, it is towards the end of the a tour that lasted over 2 years. U2 may be one of the largest cult bands in the world. Most of the audience knows exactly what is going to happen. Everyone knows Bono is going to bring a female audience member on stage for THIS song. I would also add, even without knowing the routine of the show, it aint rocket science. It's a very slow song, she isn't doing some crazy routine or dance, she is just swaying, it's a slow "dance" with zero moves. You just follow the lead. Lastly, U2 routinely bring people on stage throughout their career, before this tour. Before the internet, the fan community was pretty tight-nit, and there had always been a sense of what to expect on a given tour, and a sense culture with each other and the band. Perhaps that trust was/is naive. Regardless it was/is there. So it is orchestrated. We all know it happens every night of the tour, and for what song(s). However, the person picked is an actual audience member. Earlier in their career it was more random, and risky. Back then he was jumping in the crowd more, and with increased spontaneity. I imagine as they got bigger, the audience member is patted down or something, beyond the security at entrance? In this same concert, he does go into the crowd a bit during Until The End of The World. For when he does venture in crowd a bit, I doubt any of those people go through any further security. In fact, at their recent show at The Sphere in Vegas for the same song - Until the End of the World - Bono is older now, and there is a little electric lift that takes him down to the floor and he enters the crowd slightly. It's planned, but the people around him are not. There are clear phone videos, with different people all around, touching taking video and photos. I will add the for the Sphere shows in Vegas this last winter, I saw several shows. The first shows, he did not go into the crowd at all. The last 2 shows I saw he did. There is a bit of play and spontaneity, that evolve into a staple.

Bbm 🙂 At least for the studio version. They did show Adam but not during the segment of the song that you're talking about. I guarantee that it was played live, but probably with dotted 8th delay or something like that. Then he switches off the delay unit when they hit their stride. As far as the chick getting on stage, she was picked out by security before the song started. She didn't start the show knowing that she'd be up there, though. So yes, Bono knew that he'd be dancing with someone. He didn't know who beforehand though.

Agree. I want to get this as a prioritized request sometime in the future ... but I only have one / month, and there are a lot of songs I want to queue up. It's on my wish list, and I think David will enjoy the bass on that song, but it's going to be down the road, unless someone else beats me to it.
